“Loose Lace Baby” is a multimedia creative project that includes the creation of a song, a music video, and cover art. The project began with the songwriting process, which became the inspiration for the video concept. The final cover art is based on the themes and aesthetics of the song and video combined. This project’s purpose was to explore the creative process across multiple media forms and how those forms can work to inspire and enhance one another. The first stage of the project was the songwriting and recording stage. The song is a simple love song about feeling insecure in a relationship and is centered on the metaphor of “tripping over loose shoelaces”. The process in this stage included creative idea exchange, songwriting, music production, and research in different methods of song creation. This portion of the project was then used to inspire the second stage, which was the music video. The music video is about a young boy’s first major crush and follows him on his journey to tell her how he feels, which ultimately ends poorly for him, but goes to show that love can be a divisive but also binding force. The caveat to this boy’s crush is that it ends up being his babysitter, who is much older than him and therefore does not reciprocate his feeling despite having a meaningful connection of a different nature with him. This portion of the project involved many elements, namely using sound as a source of inspiration for moving visual art, production and design, learning about camera work, directing, scripting, screenplay, acting, editing, and most of all, collaboration. Finally, Once these stages of the project came together, the final stage was to draw on the core ideas of the two to create a piece of cover art that represented the messages from both the song and the music video, cohesively binding the multiple media forms into one final product. This stage involved photography, image editing, and pulling from the two other media forms to create a cohesive representative image The final product is a music video and song that are approximately four minutes long each, and a single cover art image. The main software used for music production was Ableton Live. The camera used was a Sony A6300 and the main video editing software used was Adobe Premiere. Many learning outcomes were reached, including multiple filming and editing techniques, video production and the work that goes into organizing and directing a film project, music production methods such as vocal recording and processing, live instrument recording, song arrangement and the use of a Digital Audio Workstation for production and mixing. An in-depth analysis of the entire process is given in detail in the following pages.

Insects are small creatures highly susceptible to water loss. A major factor in the prevention of water loss through an insect’s cuticle are their cuticular hydrocarbons (CHC), a lipid layer consisting mostly of long-chain hydrocarbons. CHCs consist of different molecules called alkanes, alkenes, and methyl branched hydrocarbons which all have varying levels of hydrophobicity. Ants are a massively abundant family of insects with important roles in the ecosystem that also utilize CHCs. Camponotus floridanus isare athe native ant species of the Florida Keys which areis known to have variable environmental temperature. Being exposed to temperatures as high as 35 °C, these ants are expected to have mechanisms that allow them to adapt to their environment. It was hypothesized that CHCs may change in concentration or composition as a means to combat the changes in cuticular permeability due to the variable temperatures that the ants experience. We therefore used C. floridanus worker ants to learn more about CHC plasticity in insects when exposed to elevated temperatures. We found four CHC componentspeaks that showed a statistically significant increase in concentration when comparing the control to treatment colonies: 3,7 dimethyl C31, an underdetermined methyl branched C31, 3,7,11 trimethyl C31, and an undetermined tetramethylbranched C31. These significant changes in concentration occurred on longer chain hydrocarbons. Under further examination, it was found that there was a strong positive correlation between elution time and the differences in medians of peak area between control and treatment colonies. This shows that there was a shift in the CHC profile resulting in an increased concentration of longer chained methyl-branched hydrocarbons. It also suggests that branched hydrocarbons also play some role in the water proofing mechanism of C. floridanus.

Psychological studies and feminist theories have determined the existence of many forms of
male bias in the English language. Male bias can be traced through American history in the form of laws of coverture and the categorization of women in law. Taking into account the connections between sexist language, history, and law, this paper investigates 1) how and why legal language is biased, 2) why male bias has persisted in law over time, and 3) what impact male-biased law has on women. The works of ancient philosophers, feminist historians, psycholinguistic scientists, and modern philosophers of law are used to explain the patriarchal gender hierarchy’s influence on law. Case law and legal policies demonstrate that sexism has been maintained through history due to the preservation of male-biased language and the exclusion of women from the public sphere. Today, the use of masculine generics continues to taint the legal profession by reflecting, rather than denouncing, its patriarchal roots.

Burnout in healthcare professionals is a widely documented trend. Individuals in healthcare may be at more of a risk for occupational burnout due to a variety of factors; including, long hours, time away from family, and patient relations (West, 2018). The result of chronic burnout can lead to a plethora of adverse health effects which include cardiovascular disease, depression, substance abuse, etc. (West, 2018). Previous research conducted has demonstrated exercise’s ability to mitigate burnout in healthcare physicians. Different forms of acute aerobic exercise have the ability to, “Facilitate subjective emotional recovery from a subsequent stressor” (Bernstein, 2017). To better understand the role that exercise plays in the lives of medical professionals, a survey was conducted in person and through phone to a sample group that included physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and medical students. It was shown that individuals who reported a higher level of burnout experienced did not spend as much time exercising on average. The results also reveal that older individuals did not spend as much time exercising. Exercise’s tremendous potential cannot be limited to younger healthcare professionals. It will be demonstrated that the use of daily aerobic exercise can be implemented across a wide variety of different healthcare professionals to aid with mental and physical well-being.

Cancer rates vary significantly across tissue type and location in humans, driven by clinically relevant distinctions in the risk factors that lead to different cancer types. Despite the importance of cancer location in human health, little is known about tissue-specific cancers in non-human animals. A comparison of cancer prevalence across the tree of life can give insight into how evolutionary history has shaped various mechanisms of cancer suppression. Here, we explore whether species-level life history strategies are associated with differences in mammary neoplasia rates across mammals. We propose that the same patterns of cancer prevalence that have been reported across species will be maintained at the tissue-specific level. We used a phylogenetic regression on 15 life history traits across 112 mammalian species to determine the correlation between a life history trait and how it relates to mammary neoplasia prevalence. A greater risk of mammary neoplasia was found in the characteristics associated with fast life history organisms and a lower risk of mammary neoplasia was found in the characteristics associated with slow life history organisms. With this analysis, a framework is provided for how different life history modalities can influence cancer vulnerability.

Cellular hypertrophy is an anaerobically-based, adaptive process that mammalian skeletal muscle undergoes in response to damage resulting from unaccustomed force generation by the muscle. Hypertrophy allows for the muscle tissue to recover from the immediate injury and also to be rebuilt more capable of withstanding producing the same amount of force without injury, should it happen again. This means the end result of an adapted muscle is an overall more efficient tissue. The ability to regenerate after damage to the structure and function of the muscle tissue is a highly orchestrated event involving multiple steps and key events to occur. Most briefly, a mechanical load is attempted to be lifted but due to demanding a high amount of contractile force to lift, it causes microdamage to the structural and contractile elements of muscle fiber’s sarcomeres. In addition to an inflammatory response, satellite cells, as a part of a myogenic response, are activated to invade the fiber and then permanently reside inside to produce new proteins that will replace the damaged and necrotized proteins. This addition of cellular content, repeated over multiple times, results in the increased diameter of the fibers and manifests in the visual appearance of skeletal muscle hypertrophy. These steps have been listed off devoid of the contexts in which it takes for these to occur and will be addressed within this thesis.

Complex animal societies consist of a plethora of interactions between members. To successfully thrive they must be able to recognize members and their kin, and to understand how they do this we need sufficient and reliable methods of testing. Eusocial insects are especially good at recognizing their nestmates, but the exact mechanism or how well they can discriminate is unknown. Ants achieve nestmate recognition by identifying varying proportions of cuticular hydrocarbons. Previous studies have shown ants can be trained to discriminate between pairs of hydrocarbons. This study aims to compare two methodologies previously shown to demonstrate odor learning to identify which one is the most promising to use for future odor learning experiments. The two methods tested were adapted from Sharma et al. (2015) and Guerrieri and d’Ettorre (2010). The results showed that the Guerrieri method demonstrated learning better and was more reliable and faster than the Sharma method. The Guerrieri method should be used in future experiments regarding odor learning discrimination

Introduction: The Eye to Eye mentorship program is a national program in which college or high school students with learning differences mentor middle school students with learning differences. There are 68 Eye to Eye programs around the country, but little research has been done on their effectiveness and how to improve it. We conducted and evaluated one program site at Arizona State University and implemented this mentorship program for the first time during 2019. We hypothesized the Eye to Eye mentorship program that paired college students who have learning differences with middle school students who have similar learning differences would improve the outcomes and socio-behavior skills of both mentors and mentees.

Methods: The Eye to Eye mentorship program assessed involved mentors and mentees who completed 12 in-person art sessions out of the normal 20 in-person sessions. The first main assessment was the BLD (Breger Learning Difference) Feedback Survey addressing one’s experience in the Eye to Eye program and which were completed at the end of the mentorship program and filled out by mentors, mentees, and mentees parents (one parent for each mentee). A total of 12 mentors, 6 mentees, and 6 mentee parents were included in the feedback survey final analysis. The second main assessments were the pre and post Behavior Assessment System for Child, Third Edition (BASC-3) provided to mentors, mentees, and mentees parents (one parent for each mentee). A total of 10 mentors, 5 mentees, and 5 mentee parents were included in pre and post BASC-3 final analysis. Fall 2019 (pre) and Spring 2020 (post) optional interviews involved 5 mentors and 3 mentees who showed interest and were comfortable participating with additional release forms.

Results: The program was generally positively rated in the feedback survey by mentors, mentees, and mentee parents. The highest responses for mentors, mentees, and mentee parents all incorporated average ratings of 4.0 or higher (out of 5.0) for perceived understanding of socio-emotional skills after Eye to Eye, experience in Eye to Eye, how having a mentor or mentee made them feel, and perceived change in self-awareness. All three groups reported fairly high ratings of improved self-awareness of 4.0/5.0 or above. No negative ratings were provided by any participants and the lowest response was no change. The BASC-3 evaluation found statistically significant improvement in mentors’ anxiety and atypicality and mentees’ sense of inadequacy.

Discussion: The Eye to Eye program was popular and well-rated despite only involving 12 in- person one-hour art sessions. The mentors, mentees, and mentee parents felt positive about the Eye to Eye program when answering the feedback survey. Some suggestions are made on how to improve this program to better enhance someone with learning differences future ability to succeed. Future research is needed to assess the true impact due to the COVID-19 epidemic and other limitations.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) consists of the primary mechanical forces to the head followed by secondary inflammatory cascades. This inflammatory cascade consists of neuroinflammation characterized by microglial activation as the first line of defense. Another component of secondary inflammation comprises of activation of peripheral immune cells that can infiltrate the compromised blood brain barrier and susceptible organs such as the lungs. Acute inflammatory processes in the lungs include a disruption of the epithelial barriers allowing infiltration of neutrophils, and edema build up in the alveoli. This is known as acute lung injury (ALI) and it dampens respiratory function in approximately 20-25% of TBI patients necessitating an intervention. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) is an intervention consisting of repeated intervals of cessation and reperfusion of blood flow to a distal limb and has treated ALI, myocardial infarction, and neurological injury. TBI was hypothesized to induce ALI through degradation of alveolar-capillary membrane and infiltration of peripheral leukocytes. Furthermore, RIC was hypothesized to protect the integrity of the alveolar-capillary membrane, reduce infiltration of peripheral immune cells, and reduce microglial activation in the brain through myokine recruitment. Male CD1 mice were subject to either midline fluid percussion or sham injury and further randomized into 4 groups: sham, sham RIC, TBI, TBI RIC. RIC was administered on proximal thigh for 4x5 minutes, with 5-minute reperfusion one hour prior to TBI. One-hour post-injury, brain, lung, BAL fluid, and blood were collected. Lung histopathology showed RIC reduced hydrostatic edema in the alveoli by protecting the alveolar capillary membrane. BAL findings revealed TBI mice had increased neutrophil counts, RIC lowered neutrophil counts. In the brain, RIC increased cortex microglial endpoints were observed with no other significant differences in microglial morphology as well as plasma myokine levels across all sham, sham RIC, TBI, and TBI RIC animals. While underlying mechanisms still have to be further studied, this current study provides evidence that RIC can be used as a therapeutic intervention to ameliorate TBI-induce ALI.

Immediate early genes (IEGs) are rapidly activated in response to an environmental stimulus, and most code for transcription factors that mediate processes of synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. EGR3, an immediate early gene transcription factor, is a mediator of biological processes that are disrupted in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). A microarray experiment conducted by our lab revealed that Egr3 also regulates genes involved in DNA damage response. A recent study revealed that physiological neuronal activity results in the formation of DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) in the promoters of IEGs. Additionally, they showed that these DSBs are essential for inducing the expression of IEGs, and failure to repair these DSBs results in the persistent expression of IEGs. We hypothesize that Egr3 plays a role in repairing activity- induced DNA DSBs, and mice lacking Egr3 should have an abnormal accumulation of these DSBs. Before proceeding with that experiment, we conducted a preliminary investigation to determine if electroconvulsive stimulation (ECS) is a reliable method of inducing activity- dependent DNA damage, and to measure this DNA damage in three subregions of the hippocampus: CA1, CA3, and dentate gyrus (DG). We asked the question, are levels of DNA DSBs different between these hippocampal subregions in animals at baseline and following electroconvulsive stimulation (ECS)? To answer this question, we quantified γ-H2AX, a biomarker of DNA DSBs, in the hippocampal subregions of wildtype mice. Due to technical errors and small sample size, we were unable to substantiate our preliminary findings. Despite these shortcomings, our experimental design can be modified in future studies that investigate the role of Egr3 in activity-induced DNA damage repair.
