This thesis examines the importance of graphic design in the marketing profession, with an emphasis on the necessity of specific graphic design skills in the acquisition of an entry-level marketing position or internship. The research begins with a thorough examination of various job posts requiring a marketing degree and a detailed analysis of how certain changes in the marketing landscape are causing graphic design skills such as the Adobe Creative Suite to be important in entry-level marketing. The thesis then discusses and critiques what actions are being taken by universities across the United States to address the issue of marketing undergraduates not feeling prepared to enter the workforce. Using these actions as a basis, the thesis then concludes with recommendations for universities in general, recommendations specific to Arizona State University, and recommendations for students given these new insights regarding graphic design. Some of these university recommendations, which also apply to ASU, include creating an interdiscplinary degree program, improving or changing current major or minor programs to integrate the two disciplines, implementing new courses, and encouraging students to use a variety of low-cost, online resources. The student recommendations include searching for degree programs with design-related major and minor offerings, pursuing a minor in a design-related area, utilizing online learning resources and approaching design students and faculty for individualized instruction.

Children today are being primed with technology at very young ages, leading to a more digitally focused lifestyle. Tangentially, today's digital culture has led to the increase of online shopping rather than in-store shopping. A group of students at Arizona State University's Innovation Space program, in partnership with Disney Consumer Products, set out to create a children's product that bridged the physical-digital gap, and encouraged outdoor activity. The result of their work was Blitz: a versatile, outdoor gaming console that brings traditional outdoor fun into the digital world. This thesis and paired creative project are an extension of the research and development done by the Blitz team. The purpose of this additional research is to discover how parents and children shop online in to design a website to market and sell the Blitz gaming system. Some of the topics covered include visual design, functionality, user interaction, and marketing tactics. The goal is not to develop advertising tactics to manipulate children, but to find the best ways to design for, and market children's products.

Students' health is directly affected by concussions received while playing sports. While concussions are an increasingly talked about topic in professional sports there are still millions of youth athletes who sustain concussions every year. My creative project takes a look at the education of concussions and how schools can help minimize the impact concussions can have on their students.

College is an exciting time in a young student's life filled with many new experiences and opportunities for self-discovery. It also comes with a variety of challenges and stressors that must be traversed in a way that is healthy and beneficial for the student. During this time a variety of pressures may arise that lead to the onset of eating disorders. The purpose of this study is to discover students' awareness of the eating disorder resources available at Arizona State University (ASU) and design a series of creative documents based on the less-known resources that are available. This study used data from the ASU Wellness department, a primary research study done at ASU, as well as data from the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). Findings indicate that ASU is not effectively promoting its resources to students. However, by implementing the marketing strategies discussed here, it is possible to educate students and in turn introduce them to resources that could drastically improve their health.

Censorship is used as a structure to limit the ability of minority social groups to share opinions and ideologies. This in turn constricts our view of reality. My creative project educates the public about the different forms censorship takes. It also provides a space for people to speak uncensored in an effort to protect their right to be heard.

The purpose of this thesis is to see if a correlation exists between young adults’ personal perception of thriving and a curated online and written course centered around thriving. The course, What Does It Mean for Ages 17 – 24 to Thrive, took place over the span of four weeks and focused on concepts of personal strengths, goal setting, gratitude and thriving. Through this course, students were expected to complete daily practices, weekly challenges and weekly reflections to help build healthy habits for their overall well-being. This course was created in hopes of seeing an improvement from the student’s levels and perception of thriving before and after the course. To collect data, the study began with qualitative interviews to gain an understanding of the participants and their current level of thriving. Throughout the duration of the course, data and feedback was gathered through the students’ assignment submissions every week. As the course came to a close, data was collected through a final round of qualitative interviews focusing on the students’ biggest takeaways from the course. In analyzing the data, one of the biggest challenges came from the students not having enough time to complete all of the daily practices. However, every student mentioned they were able to take something away from this course and hope to implement the exercises into their daily lives. One significant finding came from the survey question, “Do you actively think about your purpose in life?” Prior to the course, there was a mixture of responses stating yes, no, and somewhat. However, after the course, almost every student responded “yes” and one student responded “somewhat.” Overall, it is evident that young adults hope to thrive in life, however, their biggest challenge comes from finding enough time for themselves outside of school and work. This course allowed students to put thriving into perspective and allowed them all to grow.

This research contributes to emergent body of knowledge regarding the understanding of relationship between visual elements and E-learning outcomes. Visual images and texts are the main visual elements within the study.

A literature review was conducted on E-learning situations, and a discussion on the role of visual elements in E-learning. Data collection was also conducted by way of a test, which randomly placed participants into three groups and assigned them to three different E-learning courses. The texts for the three courses were the same font, but the first course had text only, the second course had text and "bad" images, and the third one had text and "good" images. Every time participants finished a short course, they were requested to do a short quiz based on what they had learned. In addition, every participant needed to do a survey based on his or her E-learning experience. Research data was finally collected through the test scores and surveys.

Key findings of this research are: (1) The combination of text and "good" image materials in E-learning can greatly enhance the learning outcomes; (2) the "good" images in learning materials can add to the value of the text content as well as improve the satisfactory level of learners in E-learning; (3) "bad" images do not enhance E-learning outcomes; and (4) E-learners will spend a longer time to complete learning materials containing images, no matter how good or "bad" the images are.
