Pediatric chronic pain is common and predicts risk for psychological and pain problems into adulthood. Biopsychosocial risk factors for the development of chronic pediatric pain have been examined, but the key health behavior of caloric consumption has not been explored. Adult and animal data suggest that caloric intake is positively related to chronic pain, and that adiposity and stress-related biological factors may serve as potential mediators. This study predicted that among children: 1) adiposity, flattened diurnal cortisol slopes, and caloric consumption are related to chronic pain, and 2) the caloric consumption—pain relation is mediated by elevated adiposity and/or flattened diurnal cortisol slopes. Methods: Twin children (N = 733) were drawn from the Arizona Twin Project sample. Measures included caregiver-reported caloric intake via five daily food diaries (Age-8); adiposity (composite of waist circumference, body mass index, body fat percentage) and diurnal cortisol slopes via three days of salivary cortisol sampling (Age-9); and caregiver-reported monthly chronic pain (Age-10). Results: Multilevel models (accounting for clustering within families) with sex, age, socioeconomic status, puberty, race/ethnicity as covariates, showed that caloric intake predicted greater waist circumference, which in turn predicted elevated chronic pain. However, adiposity, waist circumference, and diurnal cortisol slopes did not mediate the caloric intake-chronic pain relation. Discussion: Consistent with the literature, caloric intake predicted adiposity, and adiposity predicted pain in a diverse sample of children. More comprehensive assessment of behavioral (sleep, diet quality) and biopsychosocial factors (e.g. inflammation, cortisol; injury; catastrophizing) may aid efforts to prevent pediatric chronic pain.

Latinos make up the fastest growing ethnic minority group in the United States and are at higher risk for the developmental of internalizing symptoms in adolescence than other ethnic groups (Merikangas et al., 2010). Rumination has been identified as a transdiagnostic risk factor associated with several internalizing disorders such as depression, anxiety, and comorbidities of the two (McLaughlin & Nolen-Hoeksema, 2011; Nolen-Hoeksema et al., 2008). Further, indicators of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (i.e., flatter diurnal cortisol slopes [DCS] and greater cortisol awakening responses [CAR]) are associated with greater risk of internalizing disorders and chronic stress (Adam et al., 2010; Adam et al., 2017). Notably, no studies have examined the association between rumination and the diurnal cortisol slope in Latino populations, and literature on the relation of rumination and the CAR is mixed (Cropley et al., 2015; Hilt et al., 2017; Zoccola et al., 2011). Leveraging self-reported rumination as well as gold-standard salivary cortisol collection procedures (Stalder et al., 2016), the current study sought to elucidate associations between daily rumination and diurnal cortisol in an adolescent Latino sample by examining gender differences and bicultural competence as potential moderators of this association. Results indicated a significant but small association between night-before rumination on problems/stress and next-day DCS. Further, gender differences were detected in the effects of same-day rumination and the CAR. Greater rumination on feelings was associated with a smaller CAR the same day in males, while greater rumination on problems/stress was linked with a greater CAR the same day in females. In addition, there were no buffering effects of bicultural competence. Findings inform future research regarding potential bidirectional relations of daily rumination and the CAR, as well was how different kinds of daily rumination may have differing associations with the CAR of males and females.

Social stress during adolescence has been linked to increased ethanol intake in adulthood. It is unknown if social stress during adolescence also causes changes in the patterns of drinking, such as drinking in bouts instead of spreading out each drink. Animal models of social stress utilize mice and social isolation.

Social stress during adolescence has been linked to increased ethanol intake in adulthood. It is unknown if social stress during adolescence also causes changes in the patterns of drinking, such as drinking in bouts instead of spreading out each drink. Animal models of social stress utilize mice and social isolation. Half of the mice used in this experiment were isolated for their adolescent period, whereas the other half were housed in groups. In Phase 1, mice completed a two-bottle choice Drinking in the Dark (DID) procedure in order to model binge drinking and measure ethanol intake. In Phase 2, mice completed a free choice behavioral task, choosing between milk alone and milk mixed with ethanol. Phase 1 showed increased ethanol intake in females and in mice that were isolated. Within this phase, there was also a sex x treatment interaction, with isolated males drinking significantly more alcohol than social males. Phase 2 also showed that females drink more ethanol than males but showed no difference in their pattern of drinking. In addition, there was a sex x treatment x reinforcer interaction, demonstrating that isolated females drank significantly more vehicle than any other group. These results reaffirm that adolescent social stress is linked to increased ethanol intake, yet may not change the pattern of drinking. This suggests that the effects of social isolation during adolescence on patterns of drinking should be investigated further.

Students in academic environments receive near-constant feedback about both their own abilities as well as the performance of their peers which could significantly alter their cognitive and learning outcomes. This research investigates whether this social feedback concerning peer ability would improve students’ cognitive performance as measured by a visual working memory (VWM) task. Specifically, the present study provides either positive or negative feedback by means of peers’ performance to test for changes in the quality (memory precision) and the memorability (memory failure rate) of visual working memory representations. The effect of feedback on individual confidence was also examined, as feedback might impact subjective confidence instead of object task performance. Memory precision, participant guess rate, and confidence were compared across both halves of the experiment to determine potential time differences. Participants (N=105) were each administered a 300-trial Delayed Estimation Task to assess visual working memory ability. Participants were asked to rate their confidence in their task response after each trial and were all informed of their own response accuracy after every block of 30 trials. Along with personal feedback after each block, individuals were randomly assigned to view feedback ranking their performance as more or less accurate than other students. Results indicate a nonsignificant effect of peer feedback type on individual memory precision, guess rate, and confidence, which ran contrary to experimental hypotheses. These trends could have occurred due to the presence of participant-based moderating factors that could impact how certain individuals respond to feedback. Additionally, significant increases in both the precision of participants’ memory representations and the rate at which they guessed on the Delayed Estimation Task were observed across time. Together, these findings highlight the need for further research on the nuanced effects of social feedback on neural processing in order to improve student cognition over time.

It is well documented that menopause and the related decline in circulatory steroid hormones estrogen and progesterone are associated with memory alterations. Rodent models of surgical menopause can be used to study these effects, including ovariectomy (Ovx), or the surgical removal of the ovaries. This thesis aimed to characterize the effects of surgical menopause on spatial working and reference memory in rats and examine profiles of uterine gene expression alterations that may serve as indications of mechanisms underlying this association. Eighteen female rats were randomly assigned to one of two surgical treatment groups, either Ovx (the surgical menopause group) or sham (the control group). All subjects underwent testing on the water version of the radial arm maze (WRAM) which allows for the assessment of reference memory errors and two types of working memory errors. After behavioral testing, rat uterine tissues were dissected and RNA sequenced. The results showed that Ovx impaired spatial reference memory performance during a maze learning phase, with Ovx rats making reference memory failures earlier in the day, even before working memory load increased, as compared to control rats. There were no surgical menopause effects on spatial working memory, which may be due to the low working memory load and the young age of the rats. Post-hoc analyses showed that reference memory performance was correlated with nerve growth factor (NGF) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) gene expression in uterine tissues. These findings add to the literature on the impact of estrogen and female cyclicity on memory and cognition. The results suggest that Ovx impairment of the ability to learn long-term spatial memory information relates to uterine gene expression underlying cellular functioning and that NGF and AChE genes are involved in pathways that give way to underlying cellular functioning that impacts cognition. Future studies should continue to evaluate the effects of menopause on memory function and the effectiveness of hormone therapy.

A comprehensive comparative analysis was conducted, examining key variables influencing discard rates and outcomes in both countries. These variables include transplantation processes, waitlist criteria, donor-recipient matching, and distinct components of their transplantation systems. The findings suggest that the French transplantation system exhibits greater efficiency compared to the United States, with comparable transplantation outcomes. Key factors influencing this difference include the opt-out organ donation policy, prioritization strategies, and overall health indicators. These findings provide helpful insight into the potential efficiency gains from the French system, which can provide useful direction for such future research.

Memory as whole is impacted by changes associated with aging and menopause. Different memory types are often tested preclinically utilizing rats in different task paradigms. Most studies have focused on understanding social recognition or working memory, however these memory types have yet to be studied together. This thesis focuses on the process of creating and testing a new social recognition task that incorporates a working memory load. We tested different types of previously used social recognition paradigms with an increasing load and through qualitative and quantitative observations the task was modified until a final task was developed for a social working memory study. Young female rats were tested in this task in progressive, meaning a chronologically increasing load and nonprogressive, meaning non-chronological increase in load cognitions. It was found that young female rats had the ability to distinguish between the familiar and novel conspecifics before memory load exceeded four familiar and one novel conspecifics. Once validated through future studies, this task may be utilized to understand the impact of different types of menopause on social working memory.

In the emergency department of a hospital, providers are responsible for diagnosing and treating multiple critical patients at a time. Their ability to make quick and careful decisions often will determine whether their patient lives or dies. Because of this, emergency department (ED) providers experience significant amounts of stress during each shift which consequently may lead to burnout (Lall et al., 2019). It is crucial to investigate strategies to help control burnout among ED providers, as their own well-being directly affects the physical health of their patients. Furthermore, female providers are subject to increased stress from unique challenges within the workplace due to their gender. The purpose of this study was to determine which strategies are the most effective in the mitigation of burnout among female emergency department providers. A survey was administered to emergency department providers (M.D., D.O., P.A., and N.P.) from three hospitals in Arizona. It was found that spending time with family, maintaining good nutrition, and exercising were the most effective strategies in the mitigation of female provider burnout. These results should be considered by providers who work in the ED, female providers working in other medical specialties, other ED staff, hospital administration, and ED patients. With the implementation of these three strategies into their daily life, female ED providers may find a decrease in burnout and, consequently, an improvement in patient care.
