Stress granules are cytoplasmic foci that form in response to various types of cellular stress, including viral infection. They contain mRNA, translation initiation factors, the small ribosomal subunit, RNA binding proteins, and other unique components depending on the type of stress the cell is under. Stress granules are thought to store these components until the stress as passed at which time the mRNA resumes translation. They also have an active role in the cell's antiviral response and are required for efficient induction of the interferon pathway. There are many viruses that induce or interfere with stress granules, including poliovirus. Poliovirus is a positive sense RNA virus that is part of the Picornaviridae family. Stress granules in poliovirus infected cells differ from stress granules in cells undergoing other types of stress because they contain the RNA binding protein Sam68, their formation is dependent on RNA export by the Crm1 pathway, and they are induced by poliovirus cleavage of eIF4G and PABP. It was found previously that Sam68 is found in the stress granules of poliovirus infected HeLa cells but not in oxidative stress of heat shock induced stress granules. My research shows that this finding is true in other cell lines and thus represents a biologically significant finding. The Crm1 pathway exports snRNAs and some mRNAs, rRNAs, and proteins. To determine which of these classes of RNA is necessary for stress granule formation in poliovirus infected cells but not in cells undergoing other types of stress, plasmids with modified PHAX protein were used to isolate the snRNA export pathway. More work needs to be done to determine the impact of snRNA export on stress granule formation. This research could eventually help us better understand the cell's anti-viral response and have implications for how we treat viral infections.

Becoming good at selling is a nuanced skill. Many pivotal techniques are often not communicated properly in the training and onboarding phases, leaving many members of the sales force "crippled" before they even get into the field. We set out to discern the "best practices" of selling, and the underlying causes as to why they work. Through meticulous research obtained via study of experiments, sourced articles and other academic papers we compiled a thorough outline detailing the most efficient ways to build a relationship with the buyer and close the sale. From there we discussed the methodology to implement those skills into a complete sales training program. This paper serves as an informational guide to the necessary skills to complete a sale and how to train for those skills.

Research has long supported the idea that parks contribute to physical and mental well-being. Evidence has shown that the presence of parks reduces stress, positively impacts health, and can lower the risk of crime in neighborhoods. There have been studies that discuss variables that impact the accessibility and quality of parks in neighborhoods such as ethnicity, income, and gender. More recently, research has delved into the impact of parks on individual's happiness. Findings imply that the desire for happiness may be satisfied by park visitation and provide evidence that suggests the diversity of park activities is a significant contributor to happiness. This study aims to identify how varying park designs contribute to individual happiness. Three hypotheses are presented: 1) frequency of park visits is positively correlated with life satisfaction, 2) park structure impacts efficacy of parks to promote happiness, and 3) adults travel to parks specifically to improve their mood. Hypothesis 1 is used to understand the relationship between park visitation and overall satisfaction, hypothesis 2 aims to identify how the physical structure of the park contributes to personal happiness, and hypothesis 3 provides an understanding for what motivates adults to visit parks. This study's results indicate that there is no significant correlation between frequency of park visits and life satisfaction, nor is there a significant correlation between physical park structure and increased happiness. While an insignificant amount of participants reported traveling to parks specifically to enhance their mood, the majority of participants indicated traveling to the park to participate in an activity that positively affects their happiness. This study can act as a tool for urban planners to get an idea of why people visit parks and which features they use while they're there. This information can provide guidance when deciding what to include in future parks, utilizing their budget in a way that maximizes community use and happiness.

Traditions come about in a variety of ways varying from school to school and sport to sport. Fans in the NCAA have the most connection to their team’s traditions when they follow one or multiple dimensions of the P.A.T.H. framework. Traditions that are Passionate, Authentic, Tribal, and Historical help fans have a sacred, emotional bond between themselves and their favorite team. Most of the time, this bond makes people behave in a way that they do not normally. The best traditions create an atmosphere that allows someone to come back decades later and feel like they never left. When fans feel strongly toward the tradition, it creates a passion unlike any other. The fans will go through great lengths to keep the tradition happening. When a tradition comes about organically and is not forced on the fanbase, it follows the authentic dimension. Fanbases will not be willing to keep a tradition going if they feel like it was manufactured; it needs to be something that they want to do. The tribal dimension is created by the desire people have to be a part of a group because of a shared belief. People have a need to fit in and belong, so if a tradition is able to create this feeling, it will be more likely to stick. The historical dimension explains itself; a tradition that has been around for many years has a much better chance of being around for years to come because of the history associated with it. Traditions that encompass one or all of the dimensions of P.A.T.H. have a better chance of sticking and becoming a tradition that is recognized nationally. Traditions should eventually become something that completes the game day experience. At the end of the day, people will not remember exact plays that happened, but they will remember the experiences they shared with everyone else in the stands.

With a new generation entering the workforce, a strong economy, and a low unemployment rate, the factors that new graduates value when looking for a job is changing. More new graduates and companies alike are working to adapt to this new environment. One way in which they are doing this is through being socially responsible. The purpose of this study is to research the extent to which an organization's Corporate Social Responsibility Programs impact a student’s desire to work for them. I aim to answer the question: how do the social responsibility efforts of companies impact college student’s willingness to work for a given company by looking at these programs on a micro level.

I gathered research by surveying undergraduate students at Arizona State University. The questions in this survey dealt with job search values, CSR knowledge, CSR interest and more. Throughout this survey, I largely focused on the differences between business and non-business students. There is evidence in this study to suggest that all groups of students value working for a socially responsible company, but business students are more familiar with these companies and more likely to research them. There is not a consensus on what companies students view to be socially responsible, but there are common factors in what students look for in a Corporate Social Responsibility program. This study has a number of practical implications for companies looking to attract the best talent based on their Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Recommendations are based on survey findings and research from secondary sources.

For many years now, early word learning in children has been an important subject among many researchers. There are many ways in which children learn word-object pairings including using co-occurrences, forwards integration, and backwards integration. This study primarily focuses on backwards integration. Backwards integration entails using learned information to be able to recall a word-object pairing from a previous time. In this thesis, three different studies were conducted with children aged 3-7 years old. In the general task, children were presented with a computerized word-learning task in which they could track word-referent pairings using co-occurrence statistics, forward integration, and backward integration. The goal of Study 1 and Study 2 was to determine the best task design to study backwards integration. The goal of the final study, Study 3, was to provide preliminary data on backwards integration. The overall results indicate that a between subjects design is the most beneficial way to test backwards integration because as a group, children were learning when compared to chance. In addition, the results from Study 3 showed that children were not learning in the task. In general, this suggests that this task may have been very difficult for children to complete. One limitation of Study 3
was that there was a small sample size of only 29 children. In order to account for this, the sample sizes in Study 2 and Study 3 were combined. This combined data did show that children succeeded at the backwards integration condition. It is noteworthy to mention that backwards integration was above chance in Study 2 and in the Study 2 and 3 combination. Therefore, the overall results suggest that children may possibly be able to backwards integrate; however, no evidence of learning in any of the other conditions were present.

ART VR LLC is a virtual reality art gallery software company. The company was founded by Phillips Andrew Koss IV in 2018. The goal of the company is to give art galleries the opportunity to exhibit their artwork in a virtual reality headset. This is achieved through the development of the industry changing Virtual Reality application called Viewing Room. The very nature of art and its personal connection to the buyer makes it difficult for both the consumer and the seller to properly showcase the artwork without seeing it in person. In the increasingly online world of fine art there exists a disconnect between the art seen available online and the actual feel of the artwork in a space. The dimensions of an artwork can never be fully captured by a photograph as well as the colors and beauty of a piece of art depend entirely on how it is viewed. This creates an issue for galleries who deal with clients from all over the world as they have the issue of trying to sell a piece of artwork whose size cannot be fully grasped. The current solution is to have either the clients come into the gallery to view the work, ship it to them to see for themselves, or even attempt to show them a picture of it through the internet or mail relying on their sense of space and imagination to see how it would look. These ways cost time, money, and most of all potential sales. The Viewing Room application is positioned to become one of the few virtual reality applications tailored towards fine art galleries. The Viewing Room once used in a gallery setting allows the gallery to upload their artwork into the headset and the user can view the art and change various setting from frame, to mat color, to distance away to properly view the artwork without having to see it in person. The timing of this endeavor is well suited for success as VR technology has become affordable for use in commercial stores and the art world is moving more towards a digital presence.

Vitamin supplements have beneficial and adverse effects depending on the dosage given and the age and sex of the recipient. Vitamin supplements have been extremely profitable in the health industry, but there is limited scientific data supporting vitamin supplement benefits. Many studies over the last decade have shown that vitamin supplements provide few health benefits and can lead to adverse effects, such as abnormal bone growth, birth defects, or an increased risk of cancer. Some researchers state that people with a specific vitamin deficiency should take vitamin supplements because the supplement can alleviate this deficiency. Many healthy people take vitamin supplements to prevent disease or have better health, but some researchers argue this is a misconception. Most health organizations indicate that consuming vitamins should be through diet, not supplements. The value of dietary supplements, most of which are consumed in developed countries, has been a controversial topic, because the beneficial effects of taking vitamin supplements is hotly contested. Many experts in the field of nutritional physiology suggest that Americans adequately receive enough vitamins in their diet and do not need to take vitamin supplements. Researchers at John Hopkins announced that the United States should stop spending money on vitamin supplements. Their research has found no benefits to taking vitamin supplements, because most people in industrialized areas are well-nourished. In this study, I have gathered that vitamin supplements are not beneficial when one has a sufficiently nutrient-rich diet; whereas, one who has a vitamin deficient diet can benefit from taking vitamin supplements. Furthermore, I have gathered that people older than 65-years-old should take vitamin B12 because vitamin B12 levels decrease with age. There is not enough evidence to prove or disprove that vitamin supplements are generally beneficial. In fact, I gathered that vitamin supplements may even be harmful. I propose that further studies should be conducted to discover the truth about the possible benefits of vitamin supplementation for healthy individuals and among people with different health conditions, activity levels, and nutrient requirements.

Journalists' increased and continuous exposure to trauma on the field is seldom talked about with the depth it requires. The DART Center for Journalism and Trauma, established in 1999 at Columbia Journalism School, has contributed valuable information concerning reporting trauma and mental disorders in the journalism field. Studies show that 80 to 100 percent of journalist have been exposed to work-related trauma. The most common traumatic events that journalist experience are automobile accidents, fires, murder, mass casualties, war and disaster. But exposure to work-related trauma comes with a price: At least 59 percent of journalists are living with mental disorders. The most prevalent disorder, anxiety, is broken down into several categories: phobias, general anxiety disorders, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorders and panic disorder. Common symptoms are anxiety, grief, and depression. In this short series, I examine why reporters stay in journalism despite the risk of exposure to trauma, what trauma means to them, how they cope during times of grief, and measures that can be taken to start a conversation. I interviewed five media professionals - a freelance photojournalist, azcentral.com sports columnist, New York Times national correspondent, and director of communications at Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona. All discussed what it means to be a reporter at risk of traumatic exposure in the field.

During the Innovation Space program, my team and I (which included graphic design, industrial design, engineering, and business majors) created a product that solves a problem posed by our sponsor Johnson & Johnson. This year long project involved researching biological aggressors, specifically mosquitoes, brainstorming over sixty ideas, developing a business plan for the final 3 ideas ("ago", "WANDELAR", & "FIL"), and eventually pursing and finalizing the final idea chosen. We chose to further develop "ago", a stroller seat insert that creates an air barrier between the child in the seat and any insects flying nearby. This portable seat fits in most strollers and also cools the child's back so they don't overheat while outside. The team created a design book, design model, and prototype of "ago" including the seat, fan, and hose. As the business member of the group, I developed three business plans, a final business plan, and conducted primary research by surveying our target market, parents. This business plan included customer research and validation efforts, cost structure, entry market, competition, and other crucial information required to sell "ago". Along with the final presentation of our product to our sponsors, I also completed a reflection paper about my experience working on an interdisciplinary team and the similarities and differences I found the Innovation Space program has to a real world product development team. I also included how my experience in Barrett and W.P. Carey contributed to my success in the program as well as any personal takeaways I had from the program.
