Description
Above and Beyond ASU's Campus is a blog created for college students at Arizona State University in order to suggest opportunities to explore in Arizona out of the Tempe region. The purpose of this blog is to encourage students to go and gain life experiences that cannot be found directly on campus and allow them to make the most of their time in this desert landscape. The blog is divided into three categories consisting of outdoor activities, historical locations, and popular culture events. The blog is written from both my first-person point of view along with researched information in regard to each activity. The goal of the blog is to be relatable to the student as well as be a one-stop, easy format for finding a variety of information. The blog format was chosen in order to appeal to the target audience with its appearance, simple format, and ability to write in a relatable tone.

Description
Does a gender earnings gap exist in Norway and the United States? Overtime, the male to female pay gap has reduced. As jobs have become more gender neutral and industrialized, males and females have been given equal rights to work. However, despite these seemingly dramatic generalizations, the pay between females and males has not equalized. It appears that a woman still faces significant obstacles to receive the same pay and respect that her male counterpart is awarded. To understand more about the gender pay gap, we must also understand the attitudes and behaviors in the work place. Adding this perspective as well analyzing the time in which a woman might be away from work to give attention to motherhood are all factors that may contribute to the gender earnings gap. Understanding these factors assist in the efforts to achieve wage equality and reduce wage differentials between males and females. A cross cultural analysis between the United States and Norway will provide additional valuable insights. The culture and economy in Norway present a stark difference to the United States. In order to better evaluate the problems and to define solutions for the earnings gap, it is essential to analyze an economy that inherently gives many more benefits to the working class.

Description
This thesis explores the likely impacts of climate change on agricultural production globally and in the state of Arizona, and on agricultural supply chains. It shows increases in severe weather, including hotter temperatures and droughts, will have a negative impact on crop production in the state and on global agricultural supply chains. It also shows the effects on the environment caused by our current cradle-to-grave supply chains. As a partial remedy, this thesis explores the benefits of vertical farming systems and shows how they could be of value to the residents of Arizona.

Description
With the discovery of “Big Data” and the positive impacts properly using data can have on any and every business, it is no wonder that there has been an explosion of companies choosing to implement many possible uses of data. Consumers and any people who may not fully understand the process of collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data may be more easily swayed towards believing something that might not necessarily be true or represented accurately. Often it may feel like every hot topic issue has groups on both sides of the issues using seemingly objective data to prove why their side is correct. Seeing two contradictory sides with seemingly factual data can leave many people confused and unsure what the correct course of action is. With this in mind, I realized that there was a chance the businesses could be creating similar misrepresentations of data to sway customers that the company’s product or service is absolutely a necessity in their lives. After all, the world of marketing and understanding consumer preference is a wildly changing and constant moving target that companies have to navigate. Using data surrounding their products and services to create a desire in consumers to buy and use their offerings seems like a surefire way to successfully target market segments.
As I researched and conducted initial analysis for this project, I quickly ran into a few roadblocks that lead to me needing to pivot off of certain ideas and adapt my initial plans to fit what was actually being done in the current marketing environment. In reality, most businesses are not up for taking the risk of explicitly giving real metrics of their products and services to customers. Due to this, my thesis evolved into finding other ways that companies would use logical appeals to represent their products and comparatively analyze how these companies choose to represent themselves on a social media platform.

Description
The majority of athletes think there is one ‘right’ way to eat. However, eating and fueling yourbody are highly individualized, especially for female athletes. We evaluated the eating habits of female student-athletes at Arizona State University (ASU) by looking at how they chose to fuel their bodies for training and competition. Through interviews with six female student-athletes, two Registered Dieticians, and one Sports Performance Director all from ASU, we were able to find that, while there were some common eating trends, sports nutrition is individualized. We also learned that student-athletes have room for improvement when it comes to nutrition education.

The goal of this thesis is to explore and present a range of approaches to “algorithmic choreography.” In the context of this thesis, algorithmic choreography is defined as choreography with computational influence or elements. Traditionally, algorithmic choreography, despite containing works that use computation in a variety of ways, has been used as an umbrella term for all works that involve computation.
This thesis intends to show that the diversity of algorithmic choreography can be reduced into more specific categories. As algorithmic choreography is fundamentally intertwined with the concept of computation, it is natural to propose that algorithmic choreography works be separated based on a spectrum that is defined by the extent of the involvement of computation within each piece.
This thesis seeks to specifically outline three primary categories that algorithmic works can fall into: pieces that involve minimal computational influence, entirely computationally generated pieces, and pieces that lie in between. Three original works were created to reflect each of these categories. These works provide examples of the various methods by which computation can influence and enhance choreography.
The first piece, entitled Rαinwater, displays a minimal amount of computational influence. The use of space in the piece was limited to random, computationally generated paths. The dancers extracted a narrative element from the random paths. This iteration resulted in a piece that explores the dancers’ emotional interaction within the context of a rainy environment. The second piece, entitled Mymec, utilizes an intermediary amount of computation. The piece sees a dancer interact with a projected display of an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm. The dancer is to take direct inspiration from the movement of the virtual ants and embody the visualization of the algorithm. The final piece, entitled nSkeleton, exhibited maximal computational influence. Kinect position data was manipulated using iterative methods from computational mathematics to create computer-generated movement to be performed by a dancer on-stage.
Each original piece was originally intended to be presented to the public as part of an evening-length show. However, due to the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus, all public campus events have been canceled and the government has recommended that gatherings with more than 10 people be entirely avoided. Thus, the pieces will instead be presented in the form of a video published online. This video will encompass information about the creation of each piece as well as clips of choreography.

The purpose of this paper is to make the beyond a reasonable doubt standard in criminal trials more comprehensible for the modern juror while also increasing the modern juror’s motivation and ability to apply this standard consistent with trial proceedings. The major problems addressed include why the beyond a reasonable doubt standard is so difficult for modern jurors to understand in addition to why modern jurors lack both the motivation and ability to perform their integral function in criminal trials due to their enforced passive role. This paper traces the origins of the modern jury, delving into the centuries-long transition of the jury from an active to passive function, and the impacts historical change has had on the modern juror’s role in criminal trials. It also looks to define the beyond a reasonable doubt standard in terms of case law and pattern jury instructions and through contrast with its constituent lower civil standards of evidentiary certainty. The solution posed to remedy the aforementioned issues rests on a unique application of metaphor and imagery that can be implemented in lawyers’ rhetorical methods to instruct jurors on their paramount function in modern criminal suits.

Description
My thesis is an exploration on the principles of algorithmic trading. I was introduced to the world of algorithmic trading in the Summer of 2018 when I got an internship at a startup trading firm called Helios Machine Intelligence. At HeliosMI, my job was to model algorithms for their in-house developed platform (in Java and C#). I learned how to model several different strategies, but I didn’t understand how, or more importantly, why these strategies worked. In the Spring of 2019 when I first began planning my thesis, I initially planned on recreating and optimizing HeliosMI’s trading platform. It was after reading a few books over the summer, namely; The Man Who Solved the Market by Gregory Zuckerman, Algorithmic Trading by Ernie Chan, and A Random Walk Down Wall Street by Burton Gordon Malkiel, that I realized that I was much more interested in learning the fundamentals of algorithmic trading, so I decided to make this the new focus of my thesis. At HeliosMI, we tested strategies against the historical data of stocks using an application called QuantConnect. This application is easy-to-use, cheap (even offering a free tier) and provides plenty of documentation with an active community forum, making it the obvious choice as the platform for my thesis research. Throughout my research I focused on exploring high-frequency trading algorithms, mainly because these are the types of algorithms that are employed at Wall Street hedge funds, and also the type I worked on at HeliosMI. I developed three distinct algorithms throughout my research; a momentum based strategy, a mean reversion based strategy, and a preferred time of day based strategy. In my thesis report, I go in depth on each of these strategies, as well as discuss the history of algorithmic trading, and explore some future research aspirations.

The creative project titled “Culture and Business: Exploring the Etiquette Behind a Chinese Business Meal” focused on defining what is proper dining etiquette targeted at doing business with China. Through the use of 10 informational interviews with seasoned professionals who have experience working overseas in China, this project explored the key aspects of building relationships over a meal. Furthermore, online research was taken into account in order to provide a more up-to-date and well-rounded view. Trends that were discovered across categories include seating arrangements, gift giving, conversation topics, drinking culture, gender roles, and the actual act of eating. The goal of this project was to create an infographic and short video with the intention of educating American business students who are interested in working in China. It was found through the study that many Chinese professionals find the rules of business dining etiquette to be common sense. With globalization making developing relationships between American and Chinese businesses more accessible, providing established descriptions of how to properly conduct a business meal is essential to rising American professionals in order to ensure success in closing the business deal with their Chinese counterparts.
