Over the course of six months, we have worked in partnership with Arizona State University and a leading producer of semiconductor chips in the United States market (referred to as the "Company"), lending our skills in finance, statistics, model building, and external insight. We attempt to design models that help predict how much time it takes to implement a cost-saving project. These projects had previously been considered only on the merit of cost savings, but with an added dimension of time, we hope to forecast time according to a number of variables. With such a forecast, we can then apply it to an expense project prioritization model which relates time and cost savings together, compares many different projects simultaneously, and returns a series of present value calculations over different ranges of time. The goal is twofold: assist with an accurate prediction of a project's time to implementation, and provide a basis to compare different projects based on their present values, ultimately helping to reduce the Company's manufacturing costs and improve gross margins. We believe this approach, and the research found toward this goal, is most valuable for the Company. Two coaches from the Company have provided assistance and clarified our questions when necessary throughout our research. In this paper, we begin by defining the problem, setting an objective, and establishing a checklist to monitor our progress. Next, our attention shifts to the data: making observations, trimming the dataset, framing and scoping the variables to be used for the analysis portion of the paper. Before creating a hypothesis, we perform a preliminary statistical analysis of certain individual variables to enrich our variable selection process. After the hypothesis, we run multiple linear regressions with project duration as the dependent variable. After regression analysis and a test for robustness, we shift our focus to an intuitive model based on rules of thumb. We relate these models to an expense project prioritization tool developed using Microsoft Excel software. Our deliverables to the Company come in the form of (1) a rules of thumb intuitive model and (2) an expense project prioritization tool.

This thesis encompasses research performed in the focus area of structural health monitoring. More specifically, this research focuses on high velocity impact testing of carbon fiber reinforced structures, especially plates, and evaluating the damage post-impact. To this end, various non-destructive evaluation techniques such as ultrasonic C-scan testing and flash thermography were utilized for post-impact analysis. MATLAB algorithms were written and refined for the localization and quantification of damage in plates using data from sensors such as piezoelectric and fiber Bragg gratings sensors. Throughout the thesis, the general plate theory and laminate plate theory, the operations and optimization of the gas gun, and the theory used for the damage localization algorithms will be discussed. Additional quantifiable results are to come in future semesters of experimentation, but this thesis outlines the framework upon which all the research will continue to advance.

In an hour, the Earth is impacted with enough solar energy to power the world for an entire year. The best way to expend this renewable source of energy is by storing solar power. Many solar energy harvesting methods only produce power when directly exposed to sunlight. This issue can be resolved by implementing thermal energy storage (TES) systems. This paper presents a novel method for increasing the efficiency of TES systems for building applications. Efficiency is determined by two main factors: heat storage capacity and thermal conductivity. Although latent systems have lower energy storage densities than other types of heat storage technologies, they are an inexpensive and sustainable energy harvesting system. Additionally, the disadvantage associated with lower energy density can be counteracted by improving the charging rate of latent energy storage systems. Therefore, this work focuses on Latent TES systems and how to improve their efficiencies. This paper presents a novel approach for increasing the thermal conductivity of latent heat storage systems using graphene foams. The high thermal conductivity of graphene foam will help counteract the low conductivity of the PCMs with a small sacrifice of the effective latent heat. The expected effect is a doubled charging rate and increased efficiency within the heat storage system.

This project examines the contributions of environmental effects and role models to the overall sense of belonging and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields among women. Eleven female engineers, ranging from college freshmen, seniors, and industry members, were interviewed for their perspectives on how their childhoods, female engineers in media, and STEM outreach affiliations affected their career decisions to pursue engineering. Additionally, a student survey was sent to the general Arizona State University population to gauge interest in different engineering challenges. Major, gender, and first-generation status emerged as affecting factors for high interest in certain engineering challenges. As denoted by the survey, male students showed more interest in "Joy of Living" related challenges, while females were more interested in "Health" and "Sustainability" related challenges. First-generation students showed more neutral attitudes than continuing-generation towards most of the engineering challenges. Interview vignettes and survey results were analyzed to identify implications for K-12 outreach and education efforts.

The role of robotics mobility is essential in the world of research because it allows humans to perform jobs that are dull, dirty, or dangerous without being physically present. A typical robot environment is one that is smooth and predictable. Screw-powered vehicles (SPV's) have commonly been used in these predictable environment situations such as terrestrial applications like mud and snow. However, a gap remains in SPV's traversing complex environments, particularly debris and granular material. The goal is to study the characteristics of how a SPV might move and generate force in such a granular environment for Earth and space. In our study, the chosen granular environment is soda-lime glass beads for easy characterization. This study with glass beads focuses on two separate approaches. The first approach is using a single screw rotating while the apparatus remains static and analyzing the forces that impact the screw. The second approach includes using a full body craft with two double helix screws and analyzing the translational velocity of the craft. This study presents both experimental and computational results using simulations with Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) software packages to investigate the trends of SPV's in a granular environment.

Active flow control for airfoil designs has been researched for the past few decades. This has been achieved through steady blowing, pulsed blowing, synthetic jets, and plasma jets. These techniques have been applied to both single and dual jet configurations. This technology was examined for a wind turbine blade application so that lift and drag can be altered without needing a mechanical flap. Research was completed to also allow for thicker airfoils with more blunt trailing edges that result in the higher structural strength needed for large, heavy wind turbine blades without the negative aerodynamic effects such as boundary layer separation. This research tested steady blowing in a dual jet configuration for the S830 airfoil from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) database of airfoils. Computational Fluid Dynamics was used in the software Ansys Fluent. Calculations were completed for a modified S830 airfoil with a rounded trailing edge surface at momentum coefficients of 0.01 for the lower jet and 0.1, 0.12, and 0.14 for the upper jet. These results were then compared to the original S830 results for the lift over drag efficiency. The design with momentum coefficients of 0.12 for the upper surface resulted in the highest increase in efficiency of 53% at an angle of attack of 12 degrees. At this momentum coefficient, the angle of attack where zero lift occurred was at -8.62 degrees, compared to the case with no blowing at -1.90 degrees. From previous research and research completed in this thesis it was concluded that active flow control is an effective technique to improve wind turbine energy collection.

There are many anecdotal stories of dogs rescuing their owners from dangerous situations, but this rescue behavior has yet to be shown in an experimental setting. Studies have shown that dogs behave differently towards crying humans, but do not seek help for their owners when they are in distress. This study sought to determine if a dog could recognize when its owner was in distress and would attempt to rescue the owner. The experiment consisted of three conditions: a distress condition to determine how dogs respond to an owner calling for help, a reading condition to control for proximity-seeking and sound, and a food control to use as a basis for motivation and door-opening ability of the dog. Sixty dogs were tested in all three conditions in a pseudo-random order so that an equal number of dogs completed the conditions in each order. 38% of the dogs opened the apparatus for any condition, while 32% opened for the food and distress conditions and 27% opened for the reading condition, which shows that rescue in general is unlikely. There was no significant difference in the proportion of dogs who opened the apparatus for each condition, indicating that dogs are no more likely to rescue their distressed owners than they are to open the apparatus for other conditions and may not be able to sense that the owner is in distress. The similarities in the success rates also show that the owner can be just as motivating for a dog as food. Overall, the low success rates suggest that dogs are not generally likely to rescue a person who is trapped, even when they are calling for help.

A wide range of types of activity in mid-latitude Martian gullies has been observed over the last decade (Malin et al., 2006; Harrison et al., 2009, 2015; Diniega et al., 2010; Dundas et al., 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017) with some activity constrained temporally to occur in the coldest times of year (winter and spring; Harrison et al., 2009; Diniega et al., 2010; Dundas et al., 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017), suggesting that surficial frosts that form seasonally and diurnally might play a key role in this present-day activity. Frost formation is highly dependent on two key factors: (1) surface temperature and (2) the atmospheric partial pressure of the condensable gas (Kieffer, 1968). The Martian atmosphere is primarily composed of CO2and CO2 frost formation is not diffusion-limited (unlike H2O). Hence, for temperatures less than the local frost point of CO2, (~ 148 K at a surface pressure of 610 Pa) frost is always present (Piqueux et al., 2016). Typically, these frosts are dominated volumetrically by CO2, although small amounts of H2O frosts are also present, and typically precede CO2 frost deposition (due to water’s higher condensation temperature (Schorghofer and Edgett, 2006)). Here we use the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) and the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) onboard Mars Odyssey and Mars Global Surveyor, respectively, to explore the global spatial and temporal variation of temperatures conducive to CO2 and H2O frost formation on Mars, and assess their distribution with gully landforms. CO2 frost temperatures are observed at all latitudes and are strongly correlated with dusty, low thermal inertia regions near the equator. Modeling results suggest that frost formation is restricted to the surface due to near-surface radiative effects. About 49 % of all gullies lie within THEMIS frost framelets. In terms of active gullies, 54 % of active gullies lie within THEMIS framelets, with 14.3% in the north and 54% in the south.
Relatively small amounts of H2O frost (~ 10–100 μm) are also likely to form diurnally and seasonally. The global H2O frost point distribution follows water vapor column abundance closely, with a weak correlation with local surface pressure. There is a strong hemispherical dependence on the frost point temperature—with the northern hemisphere having a higher frost point (in general) than the southern hemisphere—likely due to elevation differences. Unlike the distribution of CO2 frost temperatures, there is little to no correlation with surface thermophysical properties (thermal inertia, albedo, etc.). Modeling suggests H2O frosts can briefly attain melting point temperatures for a few hours if present under thin layers of dust, and can perhaps play a role in present-day equatorial mass-wasting events (eg. McEwen et al., 2018).
Based on seasonal constraints on gully activity timing, preliminary field studies, frost presence from visible imagery, spectral data and thermal data (this work), it is likely that most present-day activity can be explained by frosts (primarily CO2, and possibly H2O). We predict that the conditions necessary for significant present-day activity include formation of sufficient amounts of frost (> ~20 cm/year) within loose, unconsolidated sediments (I < ~ 350) on available slopes. However, whether or not present-day gully activity is representative of gully formation as a whole is still open to debate, and the details on CO2 frost-induced gully formation mechanisms remain unresolved.

Space cooling and refrigeration systems that employ vapor-compression refrigeration cycles utilize harmful refrigerants, produce large amounts of carbon dioxide, and have high energy consumption. Adsorption cooling technology is seen as a possible alternative to traditional vapor-compression refrigeration systems. The low-grade heat requirement and eco-friendly adsorbent and refrigerant materials make adsorption cooling an attractive technology. Adsorption cooling technology employs the adsorption principle—the phenomenon in which an adsorbate fluid adheres to the surfaces and micropores of an adsorbent solid. The purpose of this study was to explore the adsorption cooling process through the use of a prototype adsorption test bed design. A basic intermittent adsorption cooling cycle was utilized for the test bed design. Several requirements for the design include low-cost, simple fabrication, and capable of holding a vacuum. In this study, an experiment was carried out to analyze the desorption process, in which the original weight of adsorbed water was compared to the weight of the desorbed water. The system pressure was decreased to sub-atmospheric absolute pressure of 16.67 kPa in order to increase the desorption rate and drive the desorption process. A hot water pump provided 81.6 °C hot water to heat the adsorption bed. The desorption process lasted for a duration of 162 minutes. The experiment resulted in 3.60 g (16.04%) of the initial adsorbed water being desorbed during the desorption process. The study demonstrates the potential of adsorption cooling. This paper outlines the design, fabrication, and analysis of a prototype adsorption cooling test bed.

Two nested capacitors can produce work if the electric fields are not aligned, and the purpose of this research was to explore the possibility of using that generation instead of DC motors. The work the capacitors produce is determined by the strength of the fields and materials that is composed of. The power density of the object is then determined by the volume. As the electric field increases in strength, the power increases, so to create a very strong internal field. The nested capacitors use a dielectric to prevent breakdown from the strength of the field. Additionally, as the nested capacitors decrease in size, their power density increases rapidly \u2014 becoming close to a dc motor's power density around the 500mm^2 size. When the result was simulated, it was discovered that the electric field was not contained to the dielectric and would result in sparking. Several other concerns would need to be addressed for this to become a viable solution.
