Take a moment to reflect on your day to day life. Think about the conversation you have with your barista at Starbucks, the polite hellos and you’re welcomes you pass out to strangers on the street, or the sound of your best friend’s latest story. Society could not exist without language. Every person utilizes language within their own spaces and communities to establish their identities and relationships with the world around them. The Linguistic Society of America classifies sociolinguistics as the investigation of how “language use symbolically represents fundamental dimensions of social behavior and human interaction.” Broadly, sociolinguistics looks at language’s relationship to and function within society.

Over 5.8 million people are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), with the sixth highest mortality rate in the United States. No known cure or substantially life-extending treatment exists. With the growing aging population these numbers are only expected to increase to about 13.8 million by the year 2050. Alzheimer’s is a multifactorial disease, giving rise to two main types: familial AD (FAD) and sporadic AD (SAD). Although there are different factors associated with each type of the disease, both FAD and SAD result in neuronal and synaptic loss and remain difficult to model in-vitro and treat overall.

Current advances in cellular models of neurodegenerative diseases overcome a variety of limitations possessed in animal and post-mortem human models. Human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) provide a platform with cells that can self-renew and differentiate into mature and functional cell types. HiPSCs are at the forefront of neurodegenerative disease research because of their ability to differentiate into neural cell types. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a protein encoded by the APOE gene found on chromosome 19 of the human genome. There are three common polymorphisms in the APOE gene, resulting from a single amino acid change in the protein. The presence of these polymorphisms are studied as associated risk factors of developing AD. Different combinations of these alleles closely relate to the risk a patient has in developing Alzheimer’s disease. The risk associated effects of this gene are primarily investigated, however the protective effects are not examined to the same extent.

This research aims to overcome the existing limitations in cell differentiations and improve cell population purity that limits the variables present in the culture. To do this, this study optimized a differentiation protocol by separating and purifying neuronal cell populations to study the potential protective effects associated with ApoE, a risk factor seen in SAD. This platform aims to use a purified cell population to effectively analyze cell type specific affects of the ApoE risk factor, specifically in neurons.

The adaptive artificial-intelligence (AI) medical device industry is a novel industry in the United States offering innovations to the healthcare field. The rapid expansion of this industry in recent years has drawn attention from multiple stakeholders causing a heated debate about how to introduce these innovations into the market while maintaining patient safety and treatment efficacy. Since early 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been releasing statements in regards to the improvement of regulation for this new technology, but has yet to take further actions. Dilemmas including 1) a difficult regulatory process, 2) a heightening financial burden and 3) looming liability issues, are reasons adaptive AI medical devices have struggled to be advanced. By conducting a thorough analysis of these 3 issues, recognizing the intricacies of them separately and together, this study develops a better understanding of the landscape adaptive AI technology is facing and provides a clearer picture for the future of the industry.

NIPAAm co-DEAEMA hydrogels are a potential solution for sustained, local delivery of ketorolac tromethamine. Current methods of postoperative pain management, such as local anesthetics, NSAIDs, and opioids, can be improved by minimizing side effects while still effectively treating severe and extreme pain. Though high doses of ketorolac can be toxic, sustained, local delivery via hydrogels offers a promising solution. Four ketorolac release studies were conducted using PNDJ hydrogels formulated by Sonoran Biosciences. The first two studies tested a range of JAAm concentration between 1.4 and 2.2 mole percent. Both had high initial release rates lasting less than 7 days and appeared to be unaffected by JAAm content. Tobramycin slowed down the release of ketorolac but was unable to sustain release for more than 6 days. Incorporating DEAEMA prolonged the release of ketorolac for up to 14 days with significant reductions in initial burst release rate. Low LCST of NIPAAM co-DEAEMA polymer is problematic for even drug distribution and future in vivo applications.

Current culturing methods allow for human neural progenitor cells to be differentiated into neurons for use in diagnostic tools and disease modeling. An issue arises in the relatively low number of cells that can be successfully expanded and differentiated using these current methods, making the progress of research dependent on these cultures as a large number of cells are needed to conduct relevant assays. This project focuses on the expansion and differentiation of human neural progenitor cells cultured on microcarriers and within a rotating bioreactor system as a way to increase the total number of cells generated. Additionally, cryopreservation and the characteristics of these neurons post thaw is being investigated to create a way for long term storage, as well as, a method for standardizing cell lines between multiple experiments at different time points. The experiments covered in this study are aimed to compare the characteristics of differentiated human neurons, both demented and non-demented cell lines between pre-cryopreservation, freshly differentiated neurons and post-cryopreservation neurons. The assays conducted include immunofluorescence, calcium imaging, quantitative polymerase chain reaction, flow cytometry and ELISA data looking at Alzheimer’s disease traits. With the data collected within this study, the use of bioreactors, in addition to, cryopreservation of human neurons for long term storage can be better implemented into human neural progenitor cell research. Both of these aspects will increase the output of these cultures and potentially remove the bottleneck currently found within human neural disease modeling.

This paper is the culmination of my creative project for graduation from Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University. The creative portion of the project consisted of researching Québécois (or French-Canadian) composers and specifically finding music for flute and piano. I wished to find pieces that could prove valuable in expanding the standard flute repertoire. My goal with this project was to shed light on some fairly unknown and certainly under-played pieces for flute and piano by French-Canadian composers and learn those pieces for my senior recital on March 2, 2020. This summary of the research experience and the process of recital preparation is intended to be a guide for flutists who may work on these pieces in the future and musicians on any instrument who take on a similar project of introducing new pieces to their instrument’s existing repertory.

Although the indigenous populations of the United States experience substantial disparities in health outcomes, little information is available regarding barriers to their access to specifically baby friendly hospitals and baby friendly services in the United States. Access is important because indigenous patients, especially women, have higher infant mortality and childhood obesity than their white counterparts.
This systematic review seeks to uncover potential barriers to baby friendly hospital services for indigenous patients in the United States. This systematic review analyzed the current literature from select databases published between 2000 and 2020 and narrowed literature down into studies deemed relevant because of their focus on the BFHI or equivalent and on indigenous patients. 303 studies were found using a specialized search string and then after evaluation under exclusion and inclusion criteria, 21 were identified for use in this review.
Analysis of these selected studies revealed trends of barriers as well as disparities in indigenous participation in current research. The conclusion of this review is that baby friendly and its “Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding” must be altered to allow for implementation in different cultural settings, especially for indigenous patients. Additionally, there is a need for additional research that focuses on indigenous patients in this setting and is written by members of that community. Increased representation from this community will enhance future work towards deconstructing the barriers preventing indigenous patients to access BFHI resources.

In the event of a climate disaster, everything changes, but the places we’ve romanticized as a frontier will become new to us once again. New Sonoran is, in essence, an American story on a global problem. It draws on American pioneer/Old West/cowboy culture, the lasting effects of climate change denial, and the individualism that pervades American culture. I want to use this project to underscore the actual isolation of individualism, as well as create a new story that speaks to a problematic but evocative cultural history while accessing an uncertain future. For this project, I drew from a varied palette of media: comics, video games, and the pervasive cultural malaise that surrounds my current generation.
The work is based in anxieties, but its media influences are a strong indicator of tone and concept. At the very least, they helped me articulate why I wanted to work on a graphic novel on a post-climate change Sonoran. This desert that I’ve grown used to will change irrevocably, but it will be a new frontier to explore while the old will become a loss to mourn. This cycle of change is something I want to highlight in my work: we can worry, mourn, and fear, but there’s going to be something new.
New Sonoran is a graphic novel based upon the journey of Sage, a cartographer and anthropologist who travels the desert, annotating maps and studying a desert irrevocably affected by global climate change. As she catalogues the changes and losses in this new landscape, she learns how residents have adapted, and how people may still relate to the land.

Many species follow networked roads. When roads are blocked, the obstruction must be circumnavigated, or traffic rerouted. We obstructed trails of the leaf-cutting ant Atta colombica and compared individual- and group-level circumnavigation as well as trail reuse following obstruction removal. Groups that circumnavigated the obstruction fastest were also the first to return to the original trail once the obstruction was removed. Also, nestward ants returned to using the original trail more quickly than outbound ants. Traffic rate was not related to speed of obstacle solving. The magnitude of reflective flow (reversing direction) explained much of the variation in obstacle-solving time, both comparing nestward versus outbound ants and variation across obstacles. Two other factors explaining variation in obstacle circumnavigation times were percentage of nestward ants carrying leaves and whether ants searched in the appropriate direction for the trail beyond the obstruction, possibly due to variation in the availability of navigation cues or motivation. Reflective flow allows highly-networked leafcutter trails to respond to blockages by using alternative cleared routes, with strength of navigation cues and motivation linked to foraging costs and benefits likely determining the effort expended to “solve” the obstacle versus give up.

In recent years, it has become evident that American civic literacy is in a sharp decline. Many scholars agree that young adults are becoming increasingly less engaged in activities involving the application of civics and that this may hinder the democratic process. This thesis will focus on how historical perspectives can improve contemporary application of civics in order to solve the civic literacy crisis. The report will evaluate different approaches to improving civic engagement in order to gauge their effectiveness and the potential for their use in the United States. In analyzing the decline, we will look at work from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) like A Crisis in Civic Education and A Crucible Moment. Subsequently, we will provide a review of Megan McClure’s Tackling the American Civics Education Crisis and Robert D. Putnam’s Bowling Alone: America’s Declining Social Capital. We will present historical perspectives from the 19th and 20th century such as Thomas Jefferson, Alexis De Tocqueville and John Dewey in order to apply them to contemporary solutions for the decline. The contemporary perspectives of Harvard scholar Danielle Allen and various professors in the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL) at Arizona State University will be analyzed and critiqued. The results of our research prove that historical perspectives, when applied to contemporary solutions, are an effective way to bout the civic engagement crisis in the United States. This information can be used to alter the curriculum in the classroom to encourage and prepare students to become civically literate and engaged in order to protect the democratic process.
