The first chapter of the Seattle SuperSonics’ story is one full of pride, including a championship run in the 1970s, being one of the most popular teams of the 1990s, along with having an incredibly loyal fan base. The next chapter of that story is one filled with painful memories for those same loyal fans. In 2008, the team was stripped away from Seattle, eventually landing in Oklahoma City, leaving countless people heartbroken and a gaping hole in the professional sports landscape. For some people, that removal was where the story ended; for many, however, that was just the end of another chapter. The movement to bring the SuperSonics back to the city and their beloved fans began the day after the team left town, and has been going strong ever since. While the voices of fans cry out for a return, many critics say that a new team would no longer be able to flourish in Seattle, and that the NBA should stand pat where they are. This project seeks to determine the truth to that statement by investigating one central question: Should the Seattle SuperSonics be brought back to life? The question is viewed through a pair of perspectives over the course of this paper. The first is based in business, where I completed a thorough analysis that covers five major factors that are crucial to determining success. The second is that of the fans, which was accessed through a survey created to figure out what truly was important to them when looking at a new team. After these perspectives have been examined, the project will turn to the debate that asks which form of reentry would be more efficient for a rebuild: league expansion or relocation of a current franchise. I feel as though this topic is one that should be more well known across the realm of sports, and wanted to shine a light on it through this process. No fan would ever want to experience the kind of loss that comes with their favorite team being taken away, and I believe that acknowledging past failures can help leagues make better decisions in the future.

For my Barrett Creative Project I set out to make an Elizabethan inspired women’s costume and write about my process. Images of the completed costume and process photos are included in the appendix. I researched the differences between my modern day costume construction techniques and those of dressmakers from the original period of the 16th century. An important distinction that I must make is that I set out to create a costume rather than a historical reproduction of a garment. This allows me to have both creative freedom and an ability to take advantage of the technology to which I have access. I will begin by reviewing the steps I took to construct the costume itself. The task began long before I ever sat down to stitch pieces together. Pollatsek writes, “Popular culture tends to show two versions of making clothing: mass - production drudged in sweatshops, or virtually instantaneous bursts of creative magic . . . (making costumes for the stage), most people do not see the planning and time that the transformation of fabric into wearable art entails. Creating costumes actually requires a combination of art, craft, and engineering” (1). I found her statement to ring true, as the completion of this project incorporated not just sewing but historical research, pattern-making, costume design, and project management. The final product of this project is a costume that very closely resembles the initial rendering. Due to the onset of Covid-19, in order to adhere to social distancing practices, I was unable to photograph the finished project on my model. The alterations marked in our final fitting were completed and the costume is made to her latest measurements.

The goal of this paper is to research and document the unforeseen effects and casualties of California’s Assembly Bill Number 5 being implemented into law. This thesis researches the background before Assembly Bill Number 5 was created, what Assembly Bill Number 5 aims to achieve, how companies reacted to the introduction of the bill, how the targets of the bill were affected when it became law as well as how unforeseen victims were affected when it became law, and what may happen to California in the future because of this. The first part of my thesis includes the introduction to the topic, as well as the background of employee and contractor classification as well as previous legal battles that influenced the creation of Assembly Bill Number 5. The second part of my thesis looks into what the bill looks like and what it would mean for companies such as Uber and Lyft who would be intended to reclassify their independent contractors as employees. The third part of my thesis looks into the effects of the bill becoming law and it negatively effecting different industries that were not intended in the creation of the law. The fourth section of my thesis looks into what could possibly happen in the future of the bill, as this thesis is due in the middle of the legislation happening to combat its negative impact. The conclusion clarifies that while the bill was intended for gig economy giants such as Uber and Lyft, it consequently harms independent contractors from many different industries.

Take a moment to reflect on your day to day life. Think about the conversation you have with your barista at Starbucks, the polite hellos and you’re welcomes you pass out to strangers on the street, or the sound of your best friend’s latest story. Society could not exist without language. Every person utilizes language within their own spaces and communities to establish their identities and relationships with the world around them. The Linguistic Society of America classifies sociolinguistics as the investigation of how “language use symbolically represents fundamental dimensions of social behavior and human interaction.” Broadly, sociolinguistics looks at language’s relationship to and function within society.

The United States is one of the countries with the highest rates of maternal mortality in the world, with significantly higher rates than other developed countries. Maternal mortality is defined as the death of women who are pregnant or recently gave birth. Many studies suggest that those deaths are preventable

The United States is one of the countries with the highest rates of maternal mortality in the world, with significantly higher rates than other developed countries. Maternal mortality is defined as the death of women who are pregnant or recently gave birth. Many studies suggest that those deaths are preventable and result from a lack of quality care and unnecessary medical interventions. It is notable that there are specific populations, which I describe as “vulnerable,” that are at increased risk of maternal mortality, including women of color, women in poverty, and women with low socioeconomic statuses. The United States also has lower rates of midwife-assisted births than other developed countries, which suggests that there is an association between adverse birth outcomes, such as maternal mortality, and midwifery care. In my thesis, I investigate that association and answer the question: Do midwives lower rates of adverse birth outcomes in vulnerable populations? I describe the history of midwifery in the United States and analyze the factors that lead to lower adverse birth outcomes in midwife-attended births. I then suggest methods for integrating midwives into the United States healthcare system, which I suggest will lower rates of maternal mortality.

In the past decade, online shopping mode has been recognized and accepted by more and
more people. Over 200 million people were online shoppers in the United States. Convenient,
options, and better prices compared to traditional shopping mode attract more people to choose
the products online. Consumer’s feedback presented as online reviews on products after the
purchase has become one of the most important factors influencing whether other consumers will
purchase products. For merchants, by studying the behavioral differences of these online
consumers when evaluating products, they can help them to understand product characteristics
and their customers to improve online marketing strategies. This article explores the differences
in the types of utilitarian and hedonic products and behavioral changes in customer opinions,
which involves 22 different categories of products from Amazon.com and customer reviews for
analysis through a variety of technical and research methods.

In 2017, the last full year before the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) was overturned by the Supreme Court of the United States, over $4.8 billion was legally gambled on sports in Nevada alone. This number pales in comparison to the estimated $150 billion that is gambled illegally on sports in the United States every year (Liptak, Draper). These numbers have continually grown year-over-year as the interest and demand in sports gambling has steadily increased. This trend will continue s states begin to legalize sports gambling and gambling operators set-up shop, allowing hundreds of thousands of people who had never placed a bet because of its limited access to now be able to do so. As fans begin to place legal bets on sporting events, there will be three types of fans who place bets: those who will never place a bet on a game involving their favorite team, those who will bet on games involving their favorite team but never against their favorite team, and those who will place bets on games involving and against their favorite team. This project explores how the modern sports fan will be impacted by the widespread legalization of sports gambling throughout the United States of America. As fans are able to place legal sports bets through their phones, computers, or at local sportsbooks and casinos, it will be interesting to see if the loyalty they have towards their favorite team remains as strong as ever or becomes divided between their favorite team and sports bets.

The purpose of this study was to interview women executives within corporate America to identify similar

News headlines are filled with unequal treatment in the workplace. However, there are also inspirational stories that encourage young women to face the challenges they are presented as they become executives in corporate America.

The purpose of this study was to interview women executives within corporate America to identify similar means of navigating women-specific issues they may have been presented with within their industry. More specifically, the questions sought to identify how these women became successful within their industry and how their female identities may have provided benefits to them, professionally. Interviewees were selected on a multitude of factors, title and status in company, industry, including availability, mutual connections, and demographics. Interviews were conducted both in person, over the phone, via web video conference and via email. All interviewees were asked the same questions, and interviews ranged from 25-45 minutes each. Each one was recorded and transcribed in order to facilitate comparison between stories, experiences, and other mentions.

The initial intention of analyzing the interviews and stories of these executives was to identify common factors that unified their stories. There were nine categories that the interviews sought to investigate: work-life balance, starting off strong, daily routines, mentorship/support, leadership, impact and legacy, advice and motivation, pros of being a woman, biggest challenges/cons. However, the interviews revealed that there were a plethora of unique factors that identified the stories these women had to tell. Overall, 5/8 of the executives believed that their female identity provided an advantage to them in the corporate sector, 2/8 women said their identity was a neutral factor, and only one woman stated she felt it placed her at a disadvantage. Further, this study concludes that the stories of impenetrable glass ceilings and roadblocks are balanced to some degree by stories of success within the corporate sector. There were 3 key themes for their narratives for success, having a support system, putting yourself first, and giving back.

The creative project titled “Culture and Business: Exploring the Etiquette Behind a Chinese Business Meal” focused on defining what is proper dining etiquette targeted at doing business with China. Through the use of 10 informational interviews with seasoned professionals who have experience working overseas in China, this project explored the key aspects of building relationships over a meal. Furthermore, online research was taken into account in order to provide a more up-to-date and well-rounded view. Trends that were discovered across categories include seating arrangements, gift giving, conversation topics, drinking culture, gender roles, and the actual act of eating. The goal of this project was to create an infographic and short video with the intention of educating American business students who are interested in working in China. It was found through the study that many Chinese professionals find the rules of business dining etiquette to be common sense. With globalization making developing relationships between American and Chinese businesses more accessible, providing established descriptions of how to properly conduct a business meal is essential to rising American professionals in order to ensure success in closing the business deal with their Chinese counterparts.

A growing body of research suggest that experiencing racial discrimination is associated with the development of mental health problems. Lee and Ahn (2011) conducted a meta-analysis that documented the relationship between racial discrimination and psychopathology, including depressive symptoms among Asian Americans. However, evidence of an increase in racial discrimination in

A growing body of research suggest that experiencing racial discrimination is associated with the development of mental health problems. Lee and Ahn (2011) conducted a meta-analysis that documented the relationship between racial discrimination and psychopathology, including depressive symptoms among Asian Americans. However, evidence of an increase in racial discrimination in the last decade requires examining to what degree its link to depressive symptoms has changed since Lee and Ahn (2011)’s seminal study. To address this issue, I conducted a systematic review of research on racial discrimination and depressive symptoms among Asian Americans from 2009-2019 in the United States. I used PsycINFO, Web of Science, PubMed, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global to perform my search. My aims were to: 1) understand the relationship between racial discrimination and depressive symptoms, 2) understand how studies vary across sex, age, measures, socioeconomic and ethnic subgroup (e.g., Chinese Americans, Vietnamese Americans). My results demonstrated that the relationship between racial discrimination and depressive symptoms was primarily positive. Factors regarding sex, age, measures, and socioeconomic status varied across studies. Future research should focus more on current issues regarding Asian Americans and use meta-analytic techniques to further investigate any potential moderators such as socioeconomic status and ethnic subgroups.
