In this thesis, we analyze the case, Swain, et al. v. Bixby Village, et al., the Ahwatukee Lakes Golf Course case, and the legal findings surrounding it. First, this thesis examines the history of the case and its ongoing litigation. Next, the background information on select definitions and other related cases is examined. Finally, this thesis analyzes three main points addressed in the Appellate Court’s Opinion on the case and presents potential next steps and recommendations for an equitable solution on both sides of this and future cases concerning land restricted to golf course use.

The following case study covers Avnet, Inc., a global technology distributor and supply chain service company with a headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona and customers in over 125 countries within North America, Asia and Europe. The case includes a strategic overview of Avnet’s unique 100-year history and transformed business model, while also highlighting the company’s current business strategies. The hallmark of Avnet’s growth and success has been through over one hundred mergers and acquisitions which make up Avnet’s 2020 company ecosystem. The strategies presented in this case focus specifically on the automotive initiative, a strong growth area within the semiconductor industry, which consists of a two-part global transportation strategy for Avnet. The strategy accommodates both Strategic Supply Chain customers as well as Strategic Design Change customers, two main transportation customer types. The case then further explores the transformation of Avnet’s automotive strategy team from a regional to global focus. This research is accomplished through a literature review of market research from various sources on semiconductor market trends and best industry practices. The research also investigates the impacts on demand creation for Avnet through customer relationships. In addition to research and analysis, other information included in the case is derived from direct collaboration with Avnet employees on the cross-functional global team and employee interviews. The research and recommendations in this paper are presented with the goal of providing proof of concept on the global automotive initiative for Avnet and will be shared with the strategy team following completion of the case study.

The first step in providing adequate prevention of children’s behavior problems is identifying possible predictors. There is an established relation between parenting style and behaviors and children’s future outcomes, including risk of externalizing behavior problems, but the mechanisms that may explain this relation are unclear. The current study investigated whether child executive functioning plays a mediating role between parenting style and externalizing behavior problems. I hypothesized that parenting style, specifically harsh authoritarian parenting, would predict a decrease in child executive performance, then leading to increased child behavior problems. Additionally, sex differences within this model were examined. Parenting styles and child externalizing behavior problems were measured through mother’s self-report within a sample of 322 low-income, Mexican-American mother child dyads in the Phoenix metropolitan area. A mediation model was performed, including relevant covariates, to test for significance of the mediated pathway. The results of the current study indicated that authoritarian parenting style significantly predicted greater externalizing behavior problems in the sample, but only for girls. Interestingly, it was also found that the addition of biological siblings predicted less behavior problems, again only for girls. These results promote understanding of the influences on behavior problems in children that can escalate to delinquency and criminal behavior. This information is critical for the development and improvement of strategic interventions.

Hand-coding systems of measuring facial expressions were developed to study and analyze human emotions, but they are time-intensive and thus seldom used. As technology has advanced, new computer software programs, such as Affectiva, were developed to code facial expressions automatically using artificial intelligence and machine learning. Since this technology is still new, Affectiva and its validity remain understudied, and no psychological research has been conducted to compare Affectiva computer coding and hand coding of children’s emotions. The purpose of this study was to compare hand and computer coding of children’s expressions of emotion during a videotaped parent-child interaction. The study answered the following questions: 1) Do hand and computer coding agree?; and 2) Are hand and computer coding in higher agreement for some emotions than others? The sample included 25 pairs of twins from the Arizona Twin Project. Facial expressions were coded from videotape by a trained and reliable human coder and using the software Affectiva. The results showed that hand and computer coded emotion were in agreement for positive, but not negative emotions. Changing the context of the interaction to elicit more negative emotion, and using the same indicators of each emotion in computer and hand coding are suggested to improve the comparison of computer and hand coding.

In eukaryotes, most messenger RNA precursors (pre-mRNA) undergo extensive processing, leading to the cleavage of the transcript followed by the addition of a poly(A) tail. This process is executed by a large complex known as the Cleavage and Polyadenylation Complex (CPC). Its central subcomplex, the Cleavage and Polyadenylation Specificity Factor (CPSF) complex is responsible for recognizing a short hexameric element AAUAAA located at the 3’end in the nascent mRNA molecule and catalyzing the pre-mRNA cleavage. In the round nematode C. elegans, the cleavage reaction is executed by a subunit of this complex named CPSF3, a highly conserved RNA endonuclease. While the crystal structure of its human ortholog CPSF73 has been recently identified, we still do not understand the molecular mechanisms and sequence specificity used by this protein to induce cleavage, which in turn would help to understand how this process is executed in detail. Additionally, we do not understand in additional factors are needed for this process. In order to address these issues, we performed a comparative analysis of the CPSF3 protein in higher eukaryotes to identify conserved functional domains. The overall percent identities for members of the CPSF complex range from 33.68% to 56.49%, suggesting that the human and C. elegans orthologs retain a high level of conservation. CPSF73 is the protein with the overall highest percent identity of the CPSF complex, with its active site-containing domain possessing 74.60% identity with CPSF3. Additionally, we gathered and expressed using a bacterial expression system CPSF3 and a mutant, which is unable to perform the cleavage reaction, and developed an in vitro cleavage assay to test whether CPSF3 activity is necessary and sufficient to induce nascent mRNA cleavage. This project establishes tools to better understand how CPSF3 functions within the CPC and sheds light on the biology surrounding the transcription process as a whole.

Women are twice as likely as men to develop Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and current MDD therapies are only effective for about a third of patients. Hormonal transitions, specifically those involving estradiol (E2), have been found to contribute to this increased vulnerability in women. This study aimed to investigate potential mechanisms underlying the sex differences seen in MDD vulnerability, specifically the role of E2. The brain region-specific changes induced by chronic stress differ for female rats than for male rats. Therefore, we aimed to determine the effects of sex and chronic stress on E2 expression in four brain regions: the hippocampus, medial prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and cerebellum. Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 48, 24 males, 24 females; n=12/Tx group) were subjected to daily wire mesh restraint stress (6 h/21 days), and were euthanized and dissected the day following the end of chronic restraint stress (day 22). Ultra high-pressure liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy was used to directly measure E2 in the brain regions. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to indirectly assess E2 expression via mRNA for aromatase (ARO-L) and estrogen receptors (ERβ, ERɑ, and GPR30), as well as expression of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and TNF-ɑ). Our findings suggest that chronic stress may lead to changes in local estradiol expression in the brain that are both sex-dependent and brain region-specific, while the data are preliminary given the small sample size. We found that expression of ARO-L mRNA, a measure of local E2 production, tended to increase in the HIPP, but decrease in the mPFC following chronic stress, and in the mPFC this pattern was only observed in males. Local estradiol production in the brain seems to act as a potential compensatory mechanism in the hippocampus, but as a protective mechanism in the mPFC, which is highly sensitive to chronic stress.

There has been very little research conducted on the long-term effects of exercise on children with Down Syndrome (DS), however, there is some research on Assisted Cycle Therapy (ACT) in adolescents and adults with Down Syndrome and has found positive results on motor, cognitive and mental health measure. Therefore, a grant proposal was submitted to develop ACT Early, a pediatric version of the ACT bicycle, developed in conjunction with Theracycle, geared towards early intervention in children with DS rather than adults with DS. Once submitted, the reviewers sent back their comments of why they would not fund the development of ACT Early. The comments focused on what the parents/guardians would want for their children. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to create a questionnaire for parents/guardians so a new grant proposal can be created based on their input and to find the effects exercise and ACT has on children with Down Syndrome. After weeks of helping create the survey based on comments from reviewers of the previously submitted grant, I collected 70 questionnaires at several events in the community. Our results showed that the exercise regimen would be most appropriate for 7-9 year old’s for 2 days a week and 30-45 min per day. The type of exercise would be light intensity on an ACT Theracycle, and it will be done in a fitness/clinical setting. Other options that were suggested were to add music or a buddy to exercise with. Additionally, straps will be used on the Theracycle to ensure maximum safety and the results will be disseminated via emails, websites, in person and through journals. In conclusion, the hope is that the changes made to the study based on this survey of parent/guardian input will help fund the development of the ACT Early Theracycle for children. This is important because early intervention in children with neurological disorders can achieve their best quality of life as soon as possible and become independent, happy, and productive in our society.

This study examines the interactions and intentions of D/deaf and hearing students who participate in the American Sign Language (ASL) Club and deaf Devils Club at Arizona State University (ASU). By exploring how and why students choose to participate in these organizations, one can better understand interactions between D/deaf and hearing communities. This study explores reasons hearing students become involved with d/Deaf communities, the types of interactions the hearing and d/Deaf students participate in, and how student involvement can benefit from these interactions. Qualitative interviews with students of different hearing abilities and observations inside both clubs inform this study. The implications of this research may be applicable to other D/deaf communities.

The label of “honors student,” and the status it carries, implies exceptional academic ability, maturity, and accomplishment. The notion that “honors” students are more capable than non-honors students dismisses the particular needs of intersecting identities including gender, race, and/or ability. Said differently, the “honors” designation erases identity and difference. For

The label of “honors student,” and the status it carries, implies exceptional academic ability, maturity, and accomplishment. The notion that “honors” students are more capable than non-honors students dismisses the particular needs of intersecting identities including gender, race, and/or ability. Said differently, the “honors” designation erases identity and difference. For instance, “honors” students who live with mental illness(es) navigate social spaces and physical structures that assert notions of “success” that are informed by conditions that inhibit bodily function, communication, and educational accomplishment as set by capitalist and ableist standards. Moreover, ableist notions of “success” are always inherently racialized and gendered such that “honors” students women of color living with mental illness are forced to navigate racist and gendered overtones informing academic “success.” Focusing on how students think about and embody the labels of “honors” and “mentally ill” provides unique insight on how the systems of higher education are based in ableist ideology. In this Artist Statement, I discuss my performance Crazy/Smart, a performance that features and stages students’ narratives detailing the means by which students navigate ableism as “honors” students. Using embodied knowledge through performance allows students to decenter dominant, institutionalized narratives about ableism and higher education, speaking up to administrators as people of power and redefining personal success. In this Artist Statement, I detail the theory and method framing my performance Crazy/Smart, a performance using “honors” student stories and narratives to highlight and resist ableist ideology informing higher education more generally and “honors” education more specifically. This Statement includes four sections. First, I provide the theoretical framework that outlines ableism as an embodied ideology. Second, I extend my argument and turn to critical pedagogy to suggest a performance means to resist ableist ideology. Third, I describe the specificities informing my performance including the choices I made to stage ableism as an ideological structure organizing higher education. The fourth and final section is the attached Crazy/Smart script.

Previous research demonstrated the overall efficacy of an embodied language intervention (EMBRACE) that taught pre-school children how to simulate (imagine) language in a heard narrative. However, EMBRACE was not effective for every child. To try to explain this variable response to the intervention, the video recordings made during the four-day intervention sessions were assessed and emotion was coded. Each session was emotion-coded for child emotions and for child-researcher emotions. The child specific emotions were 1) engagement in the task, this included level of participation in the activity, 2) motivation/attention to persist and complete the task, as well as stay focused, and 3) positive affect throughout the session. The child-researcher specific emotions were 1) engagement with each other, this involved how the child interacted with the researcher and under what context, and 2) researcher’s positive affect, this incorporated how enthusiastic and encouraging the researcher was throughout the session. It was hypothesized that effectiveness of the intervention would be directly correlated with the degree that the child displayed positive emotions during the intervention. Thus, the analysis of these emotions should highlight differences between the control and EMBRACE group and help to explain variability in effectiveness of the intervention. The results did indicate that children in the EMBRACE group generally had a significantly higher positive affect compared to the control group, but these results did not influence the ability for the child to effectively recall or moderate the EEG variables in the post-test. The results also showed that children who interacted with the researcher more tended to be in the EMBRACE group, whereas children who did not interact with the researcher more frequently were in the control group, showing that the EMBRACE intervention ended up being a more collaborative task.
