The conversion of H2S enables the recycling of a waste gas into a potential source of hydrogen at a lower thermodynamic energy cost as compared to water splitting. However, studies on the photocatalytic decomposition of H2S focus on traditional deployment of catalyst materials to facilitate this conversion, and operation only when a light source is available. In this study, the efficacy of Direct Ink Written (DIW) luminous structures for H2S conversion has been investigated, with the primary objective of sustaining H2S conversion when a light source has been terminated. Additionally, as a secondary objective, improving light distribution within monoliths for photocatalytic applications is desired. The intrinsic illumination of the 3D printed monoliths developed in this work could serve as an alternative to monolith systems that employ light transmitting fiber optic cables that have been previously proposed to improve light distribution in photocatalytic systems. The results that were obtained demonstrate that H2S favorable adsorbents, a wavelength compatible long afterglow phosphor, and a photocatalyst can form viscoelastic inks that are printable into DIW luminous monolithic contactors. Additionally, rheological, optical and porosity analyses conducted, provide design guidelines for future studies seeking to develop DIW luminous monoliths from compatible catalyst-phosphor pairs. The monoliths that were developed demonstrate not only improved conversion when exposed to light, but more significantly, extended H2S conversion from the afterglow of the monoliths when an external light source was removed. Lastly, considering growing interests in attaining a global circular economy, the techno-economic feasibility of a H2S-CO2 co-utilization plant leveraging hydrogen from H2S photocatalysis as a feed source for a downstream CO2 methanation plant has been assessed. The work provides preliminary information to guide future chemical kinetic design characteristics that are important to strive for if using H2S as a source of hydrogen in a CO2 methanation facility.

This dissertation introduces FARCOM (Fortran Adaptive Refiner for Cartesian Orthogonal Meshes), a new general library for adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) based on an unstructured hexahedral mesh framework. As a result of the underlying unstructured formulation, the refinement and coarsening operators of the library operate on a single-cell basis and perform in-situ replacement of old mesh elements. This approach allows for h-refinement without the memory and computational expense of calculating masked coarse grid cells, as is done in traditional patch-based AMR approaches, and enables unstructured flow solvers to have access to the automated domain generation capabilities usually only found in tree AMR formulations.

The library is written to let the user determine where to refine and coarsen through custom refinement selector functions for static mesh generation and dynamic mesh refinement, and can handle smooth fields (such as level sets) or localized markers (e.g. density gradients). The library was parallelized with the use of the Zoltan graph-partitioning library, which provides interfaces to both a graph partitioner (PT-Scotch) and a partitioner based on Hilbert space-filling curves. The partitioned adjacency graph, mesh data, and solution variable data is then packed and distributed across all MPI ranks in the simulation, which then regenerate the mesh, generate domain decomposition ghost cells, and create communication caches.

Scalability runs were performed using a Leveque wave propagation scheme for solving the Euler equations. The results of simulations on up to 1536 cores indicate that the parallel performance is highly dependent on the graph partitioner being used, and differences between the partitioners were analyzed. FARCOM is found to have better performance if each MPI rank has more than 60,000 cells.

Advancements to a dual scale Large Eddy Simulation (LES) modeling approach for immiscible turbulent phase interfaces are presented. In the dual scale LES approach, a high resolution auxiliary grid, used to capture a fully resolved interface geometry realization, is linked to an LES grid that solves the filtered Navier-Stokes equations.

Advancements to a dual scale Large Eddy Simulation (LES) modeling approach for immiscible turbulent phase interfaces are presented. In the dual scale LES approach, a high resolution auxiliary grid, used to capture a fully resolved interface geometry realization, is linked to an LES grid that solves the filtered Navier-Stokes equations. Exact closure of the sub-filter interface terms is provided by explicitly filtering the fully resolved quantities from the auxiliary grid. Reconstructing a fully resolved velocity field to advance the phase interface requires modeling several sub-filter effects, including shear and accelerational instabilities and phase change. Two sub-filter models were developed to generate these sub-filter hydrodynamic instabilities: an Orr-Sommerfeld model and a Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) vortex sheet method. The Orr-Sommerfeld sub-filter model was found to be incompatible with the dual scale approach, since it is unable to generate interface rollup and a process to separate filtered and sub-filter scales could not be established. A novel VoF vortex sheet method was therefore proposed, since prior vortex methods have demonstrated interface rollup and following the LES methodology, the vortex sheet strength could be decomposed into its filtered and sub-filter components. In the development of the VoF vortex sheet method, it was tested with a variety of classical hydrodynamic instability problems, compared against prior work and linear theory, and verified using Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). An LES consistent approach to coupling the VoF vortex sheet with the LES filtered equations is presented and compared against DNS. Finally, a sub-filter phase change model is proposed and assessed in the dual scale LES framework with an evaporating interface subjected to decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence. Results are compared against DNS and the interplay between surface tension forces and evaporation are discussed.

In this dissertation, two types of passive air freshener products from Henkel, the wick-based air freshener and gel-based air freshener, are studied for their wicking mechanisms and evaporation performances.The fibrous pad of the wick-based air freshener is a porous medium that absorbs fragrance by capillary force and releases the fragrance into the ambient air. To investigate the wicking process, a two-dimensional multiphase flow numerical model using COMSOL Multiphysics is built. Saturation and liquid pressure inside the pad are solved. Comparison between the simulation results and experiments shows that evaporation occurs simultaneously with the wicking process. The evaporation performance on the surface of the wicking pad is analyzed based on the kinetic theory, from which the mass flow rate of molecules passing the interface of each pore of the porous medium is obtained. A 3D model coupling the evaporation model and dynamic wicking on the evaporation pad is built to simulate the entire performance of the air freshener to the environment for a long period of time. Diffusion and natural convection effects are included in the simulation. The simulation results match well with the experiments for both the air fresheners placed in a chamber and in the absent of a chamber, the latter of which is subject to indoor airflow. The gel-based air freshener can be constructed as a porous medium in which the solid network of particles spans the volume of the fragrance liquid. To predict the evaporation performance of the gel, two approaches are tested for gel samples in hemispheric shape. The first approach is the sessile drop model commonly used for the drying process of a pure liquid droplet. It can be used to estimate the weight loss rate and time duration of the evaporation. Another approach is to simulate the concentration profile outside the gel and estimate the evaporation rate from the surface of the gel using the kinetic theory. The evaporation area is updated based on the change of pore size. A 3D simulation using the same analysis is further applied to the cylindrical gel sample. The simulation results match the experimental data well.

Theoretical analyses of liquid atomization (bulk to droplet conversion) and turbulence have potential to advance the computability of these flows. Instead of relying on full computations or models, fundamental conservation equations can be manipulated to generate partial or full solutions. For example, integral form of the mass and energy for spray flows leads to an explicit relationship between the drop size and liquid velocities. This is an ideal form to integrate with existing computational fluid dynamic (CFD), which is well developed to solve for the liquid velocities, i.e., the momentum equation(s). Theoretical adaption to CFD has been performed for various injection geometries, with results that compare quite well with experimental data. Since the drop size is provided analytically, computational time/cost for simulating spray flows with liquid atomization is no more than single-phase flows. Some advances have also been made on turbulent flows, by using a new set of perspectives on transport, scaling and energy distributions. Conservation equations for turbulence momentum and kinetic energy have been derived in a coordinate frame moving with the local mean velocities, which produce the Reynolds stress components, without modeling. Scaling of the Reynolds stress is also found at the first- and second-gradient levels. Finally, maximum-entropy principle has been used to derive the energy spectra in turbulent flows.

The energy consumed by buildings occupies a large part of energy consumption and carbon emissions. Meanwhile, enormous amounts of waste heat from buildings and the swiftly increasing demand for electric energy have become one of the essential contradictions that scientists pay attention to. As a result, how to make use of the waste heat to generate electric energy becomes an appreciable research topic. In the latest research, it is common to convert the thermal energy generated by the temperature difference into electrical energy using the Seebeck effect. In previous research, a prototype of a thermogalvanic cell with graphite as the electrodes and a combination of Iron (II) and Iron (III) perchlorate salts (Fe(ClO4)2, Fe(ClO4)3) as the electrolyte, and with a 3D-printed Schwarz-P structure, was designed and assembled for achieving the energy conversion. The research shows that the incorporation of a 3D-printed Schwarz-P structure improves the thermogalvanic cell’s performance and increases the temperature difference across the cell. Here we focus on the same type of thermogalvanic cell prototype and keep the same working temperature difference but use different electrolyte concentrations (0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.25 mol/L) to measure the electric output, including open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and maximum output power, and the internal resistance. The results indicate that the open-circuit voltage and maximum output power increase with the rise of electrolyte concentrations, and the short-circuit current decreases with the rise of electrolyte concentrations.

This thesis aims to determine how finite wing aerodynamic loads change in proximity to the ground. In this study, the primary design tool is an inviscid panel method code, VORLAX. The validation tool is a commercial volume grid CFD package, ANSYS FLUENT. I use VORLAX to simulate wings with different incidences and aspect ratios to look at how ground effect impacts spanwise loading and incipient flow separation. Then the results were compared to widely published equations such as McCormick, Torenbeek, and Hoerner & Borst. Because I found that these “famous” equations function best only for specific conditions, I propose a new empirical equation to estimate ground effect lift as a function of aspect ratio and incidence. Using Stratford’s method to predict signs of flow separation in the inviscid solutions, I found that variations in the height above the ground were not significant enough to change the stall angle of low aspect ratio wings. I did find early signs of flow separation with increasing aspect ratio. I observe significant changes in spanwise loading when in ground effect; as I narrow the gap, the transverse loading builds higher near the center of the wing. These effects were more apparent in wings with smaller aspect ratio; higher aspect ratio wings experience a higher loading gradient near the tips in proximity to the ground. I found that high aspect ratio wings have a smaller stall angle compared to that of lower aspect ratio wings; these trends are consistent between the potential flow solution and the volume grid CFD viscous solution.

This study uses the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to simulate and predict the changes in local climate attributed to the urbanization for five desert cities. The simulations are performed in the fashion of climate downscaling, constrained by the surface boundary conditions generated from high resolution land-use maps. For each city, the land-use maps of 1985 and 2010 from Landsat satellite observation, and a projected land-use map for 2030, are used to represent the past, present, and future. An additional set of simulations for Las Vegas, the largest of the five cities, uses the NLCD 1992 and 2006 land-use maps and an idealized historical land-use map with no urban coverage for 1900.

The study finds that urbanization in Las Vegas produces a classic urban heat island (UHI) at night but a minor cooling during the day. A further analysis of the surface energy balance shows that the decrease in surface Albedo and increase effective emissivity play an important role in shaping the local climate change over urban areas. The emerging urban structures slow down the diurnal wind circulation over the city due to an increased effective surface roughness. This leads to a secondary modification of temperature due to the interaction between the mechanical and thermodynamic effects of urbanization.

The simulations for the five desert cities for 1985 and 2010 further confirm a common pattern of the climatic effect of urbanization with significant nighttime warming and moderate daytime cooling. This effect is confined to the urban area and is not sensitive to the size of the city or the detail of land cover in the surrounding areas. The pattern of nighttime warming and daytime cooling remains robust in the simulations for the future climate of the five cities using the projected 2030 land-use maps. Inter-city differences among the five urban areas are discussed.

The subject of this thesis is concerned with the amount of cooling air assigned to seal high pressure turbine rim cavities which is critical for performance as well as component life. Insufficient air leads to excessive hot annulus gas ingestion and its penetration deep into the cavity compromising disc life.

The subject of this thesis is concerned with the amount of cooling air assigned to seal high pressure turbine rim cavities which is critical for performance as well as component life. Insufficient air leads to excessive hot annulus gas ingestion and its penetration deep into the cavity compromising disc life. Excessive purge air, adversely affects performance. Experiments on a rotating turbine stage rig which included a rotor-stator forward disc cavity were performed at Arizona State University. The turbine rig has 22 vanes and 28 blades, while the rim cavity is composed of a single-tooth rim lab seal and a rim platform overlap seal. Time-averaged static pressures were measured in the gas path and the cavity, while mainstream gas ingestion into the cavity was determined by measuring the concentration distribution of tracer gas (carbon dioxide). Additionally, particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure fluid velocity inside the rim cavity between the lab seal and the overlap. The data from the experiments were compared to an 360-degree unsteady RANS (URANS) CFD simulations. Although not able to match the time-averaged test data satisfactorily, the CFD simulations brought to light the unsteadiness present in the flow during the experiment which the slower response data did not fully capture. To interrogate the validity of URANS simulations in capturing complex rotating flow physics, the scope of this work also included to validating the CFD tool by comparing its predictions against experimental LDV data in a closed rotor-stator cavity. The enclosed cavity has a stationary shroud, a rotating hub, and mass flow does not enter or exit the system. A full 360 degree numerical simulation was performed comparing Fluent LES, with URANS turbulence models. Results from these investigations point to URANS state of art under-predicting closed cavity tangential velocity by 32% to 43%, and open rim cavity effectiveness by 50% compared to test data. The goal of this thesis is to assess the validity of URANS turbulence models in more complex rotating flows, compare accuracy with LES simulations, suggest CFD settings to better simulate turbine stage mainstream/disc cavity interaction with ingestion, and recommend experimentation techniques.

The world has been continuously urbanized and is currently accommodating more than half of the human population. Despite that cities cover only less than 3% of the Earth’s land surface area, they emerged as hotspots of anthropogenic activities. The drastic land use changes, complex three-dimensional urban terrain, and anthropogenic heat emissions alter the transport of mass, heat, and momentum, especially within the urban canopy layer. As a result, cities are confronting numerous environmental challenges such as exacerbated heat stress, frequent air pollution episodes, degraded water quality, increased energy consumption and water use, etc. Green infrastructure, in particular, the use of trees, has been proved as an effective means to improve urban environmental quality in existing research. However, quantitative evaluations of the efficacy of urban trees in regulating air quality and thermal environment are impeded by the limited temporal and spatial scales in field measurements and the deficiency in numerical models.

This dissertation aims to advance the simulation of realistic functions of urban trees in both microscale and mesoscale numerical models, and to systematically evaluate the cooling capacity of urban trees under thermal extremes. A coupled large-eddy simulation–Lagrangian stochastic modeling framework is developed for the complex urban environment and is used to evaluate the impact of urban trees on traffic-emitted pollutants. Results show that the model is robust for capturing the dispersion of urban air pollutants and how strategically implemented urban trees can reduce vehicle-emitted pollution. To evaluate the impact of urban trees on the thermal environment, the radiative shading effect of trees are incorporated into the integrated Weather Research and Forecasting model. The mesoscale model is used to simulate shade trees over the contiguous United States, suggesting how the efficacy of urban trees depends on geographical and climatic conditions. The cooling capacity of urban trees and its response to thermal extremes are then quantified for major metropolitans in the United States based on remotely sensed data. It is found the nonlinear temperature dependence of the cooling capacity remarkably resembles the thermodynamic liquid-water–vapor equilibrium. The findings in this dissertation are informative to evaluating and implementing urban trees, and green infrastructure in large, as an important urban planning strategy to cope with emergent global environmental changes.
