In this research work, a novel control system strategy for the robust control of an unmanned ground vehicle is proposed. This strategy is motivated by efforts to mitigate the problem for scenarios in which the human operator is unable to properly communicate with the vehicle. This novel control system strategy consisted of three major components: I.) Two independent intelligent controllers, II.) An intelligent navigation system, and III.) An intelligent controller tuning unit. The inner workings of the first two components are based off the Brain Emotional Learning (BEL), which is a mathematical model of the Amygdala-Orbitofrontal, a region in mammalians brain known to be responsible for emotional learning. Simulation results demonstrated the implementation of the BEL model to be very robust, efficient, and adaptable to dynamical changes in its application as controller and as a sensor fusion filter for an unmanned ground vehicle. These results were obtained with significantly less computational cost when compared to traditional methods for control and sensor fusion. For the intelligent controller tuning unit, the implementation of a human emotion recognition system was investigated. This system was utilized for the classification of driving behavior. Results from experiments showed that the affective states of the driver are accurately captured. However, the driver's affective state is not a good indicator of the driver's driving behavior. As a result, an alternative method for classifying driving behavior from the driver's brain activity was explored. This method proved to be successful at classifying the driver's behavior. It obtained results comparable to the common approach through vehicle parameters. This alternative approach has the advantage of directly classifying driving behavior from the driver, which is of particular use in UGV domain because the operator's information is readily available. The classified driving mode was used tune the controllers' performance to a desired mode of operation. Such qualities are required for a contingency control system that would allow the vehicle to operate with no operator inputs.

This thesis presents a multi-modal motion tracking system for stroke patient rehabilitation. This system deploys two sensor modules: marker-based motion capture system and inertial measurement unit (IMU). The integrated system provides real-time measurement of the right arm and trunk movement, even in the presence of marker occlusion. The information from the two sensors is fused through quaternion-based recursive filters to promise robust detection of torso compensation (undesired body motion). Since this algorithm allows flexible sensor configurations, it presents a framework for fusing the IMU data and vision data that can adapt to various sensor selection scenarios. The proposed system consequently has the potential to improve both the robustness and flexibility of the sensing process. Through comparison between the complementary filter, the extended Kalman filter (EKF), the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and the particle filter (PF), the experimental part evaluated the performance of the quaternion-based complementary filter for 10 sensor combination scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate the favorable performance of the proposed system in case of occlusion. Such investigation also provides valuable information for filtering algorithm and strategy selection in specific sensor applications.

Technological progress in robot sensing, design, and fabrication, and the availability of open source software frameworks such as the Robot Operating System (ROS), are advancing the applications of swarm robotics from toy problems to real-world tasks such as surveillance, precision agriculture, search-and-rescue, and infrastructure inspection. These applications will require the development of robot controllers and system architectures that scale well with the number of robots and that are robust to robot errors and failures. To achieve this, one approach is to design decentralized robot control policies that require only local sensing and local, ad-hoc communication. In particular, stochastic control policies can be designed that are agnostic to individual robot identities and do not require a priori information about the environment or sophisticated computation, sensing, navigation, or communication capabilities. This dissertation presents novel swarm control strategies with these properties for detecting and mapping static targets, which represent features of interest, in an unknown, bounded, obstacle-free environment. The robots move on a finite spatial grid according to the time-homogeneous transition probabilities of a Discrete-Time Discrete-State (DTDS) Markov chain model, and they exchange information with other robots within their communication range using a consensus (agreement) protocol. This dissertation extend theoretical guarantees on multi-robot consensus over fixed and time-varying communication networks with known connectivity properties to consensus over the networks that have Markovian switching dynamics and no presumed connectivity. This dissertation develops such swarm consensus strategies for detecting a single feature in the environment, tracking multiple features, and reconstructing a discrete distribution of features modeled as an occupancy grid map. The proposed consensus approaches are validated in numerical simulations and in 3D physics-based simulations of quadrotors in Gazebo. The scalability of the proposed approaches is examined through extensive numerical simulation studies over different swarm populations and environment sizes.

While wearable soft robots have successfully addressed many inherent design limitations faced by wearable rigid robots, they possess a unique set of challenges due to their soft and compliant nature. Some of these challenges are present in the sensing, modeling, control and evaluation of wearable soft robots. Machine learning algorithms have shown promising results for sensor fusion with wearable robots, however, they require extensive data to train models for different users and experimental conditions. Modeling soft sensors and actuators require characterizing non-linearity and hysteresis, which complicates deriving an analytical model. Experimental characterization can capture the characteristics of non-linearity and hysteresis but requires developing a synthesized model for real-time control. Controllers for wearable soft robots must be robust to compensate for unknown disturbances that arise from the soft robot and its interaction with the user. Since developing dynamic models for soft robots is complex, inaccuracies that arise from the unmodeled dynamics lead to significant disturbances that the controller needs to compensate for. In addition, obtaining a physical model of the human-robot interaction is complex due to unknown human dynamics during walking. Finally, the performance of soft robots for wearable applications requires extensive experimental evaluation to analyze the benefits for the user. To address these challenges, this dissertation focuses on the sensing, modeling, control and evaluation of soft robots for wearable applications. A model-based sensor fusion algorithm is proposed to improve the estimation of human joint kinematics, with a soft flexible robot that requires compact and lightweight sensors. To overcome limitations with rigid sensors, an inflatable soft haptic sensor is developed to enable gait sensing and haptic feedback. Through experimental characterization, a mathematical model is derived to quantify the user's ground reaction forces and the delivered haptic force. Lastly, the performance of a wearable soft exosuit in assisting human users during lifting tasks is evaluated, and the benefits obtained from the soft robot assistance are analyzed.

Soft robots provide an additional measure of safety and compliance over traditionalrigid robots. Generally, control and modelling experiments take place using a motion capture system for measuring robot configuration. While accurate, motion capture systems are expensive and require re-calibration whenever the cameras are adjusted. While advances in soft sensors contribute to a potential solution to sensing outside of a lab environment, most of these sensing methods require the sensors to be embedded into the soft robot arm. In this work, a more practical sensing method is proposed using off-the-shelf sensors and a Robust Extended Kalman Filter based sensor fusion method. Inertial measurement unit sensors and wire draw sensors are used to accurately estimate the state of the robot. An explanation for the need for sensor fusion is included in this work. The sensor fusion state estimate is compared to a motion capture measurement along with the raw inertial measurement unit reading to verify the accuracy of the results. The potential for this sensing system is further validated through Linear Quadratic Gaussian control of the soft robot. The Robust Extended Kalman Filter based sensor fusion shows an error of less than one degree when compared to the motion capture system.

Though a single mode of energy transfer, optical radiation meaningfully interacts with its surrounding environment at over a wide range of physical length scales. For this reason, its reconstruction and measurement are of great importance in remote sensing, as these multi-scale interactions encode a great deal of information about distant objects, surfaces, and physical phenomena. For some remote sensing applications, obtaining a desired quantity of interest does not necessitate the explicit mapping of each point in object space to an image space with lenses or mirrors. Instead, only edge rays or physical boundaries of the sensing instrument are considered, while the spatial intensity distribution of optical energy received from a distant object informs its position, optical characteristics, or physical/chemical state.

Admittedly specialized, the principals and consequences of non-imaging optics are nevertheless applicable to heterogeneous semiconductor integration and automotive light detection and ranging (LiDAR), two important emerging technologies. Indeed, a review of relevant engineering literature finds two under-addressed remote sensing challenges. The semiconductor industry lacks an optical strain metrology with displacement resolution smaller than 100 nanometers capable of measuring strain fields between high-density interconnect lines. Meanwhile, little attention is paid to the per-meter sensing characteristics of scene-illuminating flash LiDAR in the context of automotive applications, despite the technology’s much lower cost. It is here that non-imaging optics offers intriguing instrument design and explanations of observed sensor performance at vastly different length scales.

In this thesis, an effective non-contact technique for mapping nanoscale mechanical strain fields and out-of-plane surface warping via laser diffraction is demonstrated, with application as a novel metrology for next-generation semiconductor packages. Additionally, object detection distance of low-cost automotive flash LiDAR, on the order of tens of meters, is understood though principals of optical energy transfer from the surface of a remote object to an extended multi-segment detector. Such information is of consequence when designing an automotive perception system to recognize various roadway objects in low-light scenarios.
