Nonetheless, scholars contend that sexism is still pervasive but often manifests as female microaggressions, which have been defined as often subtle, covert forms of gender discrimination (Capodilupo et al., 2010). Extant sexism scales fail to capture female microaggresions, limiting understanding of the correlates and consequences of women’s experiences of gender discrimination. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to develop the Female Microaggressions Scale (FeMS) based on an existing theoretical taxonomy and content analysis of social media data, which identifies diverse forms of sexism. Two separate studies were conducted for exploratory factor analysis (N = 582) and confirmatory factor analysis (N = 325). Exploratory factor analyses supported an eight-factor, correlated structure and confirmatory factor analyses supported a bifactor model, with eight specific factors and one general FeMS factor. Overall, reliability and validity of the FeMS (general FeMS and subscales) were mostly supported in the two present samples of diverse women. The FeMS’ subscales and body surveillance were significantly positively correlated. Results regarding correlations between the FeMS subscales and anxiety, depression, and life satisfaction were mixed. The FeMS (general FeMS) was significantly positively correlated with anxiety, body surveillance, and another measure of sexism but not depression or life satisfaction. Furthermore, the FeMS (general FeMS) explained variance in anxiety and body surveillance (but not depression, self-esteem, or life satisfaction) above and beyond that explained by an existing sexism measure and explained variance in anxiety and depression (but not self-esteem) above and beyond that explained by neuroticism. Implications for future research are discussed.

Climate change poses a serious challenge humankind. Society’s reliance on fossil fuels raises atmospheric CO2 concentrations causing global warming. Already, the planet has warmed by 1.1 °C making it nearly impossible to heed the advice of the IPCC (2022) and prevent warming in excess of 1.5 °C by 2050. Even the current excess of CO2 in the atmosphere poses significant risks. Direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 offers one of the most scalable options to the drawdown of carbon. DAC can collect CO2 that is already diluted into the atmosphere for disposal or utilization. Central to most DAC are sorbents, i.e., materials that bind and release CO2 in a capture and release cycle. There are sorbents that cycle through a temperature swing. Others use a moisture swing, or a pressure swing or combinations of all of them. Since DAC is still a nascent technology, advancement of sorbents is an important part of DAC development. There is a nearly infinite combination of possible sorbents and form factors of sorbents that can be deployed in many different variations of DAC. Our goal is to develop a methodology for characterizing sorbents to facilitate rational choices among different options. Good sorbent characteristics include high capacity, fast sorption and desorption kinetics, low energy need for unloading, and longevity. This work presents the development of a systematic approach to evaluate sorbents from the milligram to tonne scale focusing on the important characteristics mentioned above. The work identified a good temperature swing sorbent whose characterization moved from the mg to kg scale without loss in performance. This work represents a first step in systematizing sorbent characterization for rational sorbent development programs.

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore how students experience the New Student Orientation Experience (NSOE) and how they perceived it prepared them for their 1st semester of college at a large public university in the United States, Arizona State University (ASU). Institutions of higher education are under pressure to operate more efficiently, reduce costs, and achieve higher student performance outcomes. Student retention models provided the framework for this study as orientation programs have long been considered an impactful component of first-year programs. This study aimed to learn more about student experiences, the value of their experiences, and their preparation for ASU based on attendance. Data were collected from surveys completed following participating in each of the three modules in the NSOE: (a) ASU Essentials, (b) Academic Orientation Session, and (c) ASU Ready. Over 3,000 students responded to survey questions. Though accelerated by the COVID-19 global pandemic, the concept of leveraging technology to deliver orientation to supplant in-person programs is still an emerging approach. This study added to the limited body of literature exploring the experience of in-person students going through an online orientation and can be replicated at any 2- or 4-year institutions. When student participation in online orientation results in outcomes that are commensurate with traditional in-person orientation models, universities will have a viable strategy to deliver a key component of the first year transition programming at scale.
