Unauthorized immigrants account for approximately one fourth of all immigrants in the United States, yet they dominate public perceptions and are at the heart of a policy impasse. Caught in the middle are the children of these immigrants--youth who are coming of age and living in the shadows; they are an invisible cohort. An estimated 5.5 million children and adolescents are growing up with unauthorized immigrant parents, and are experiencing multiple, and yet unrecognized developmental consequences of their families' existence in the shadow of the law. Although these youth are American in spirit and voice, they are, nonetheless, members of families that are "illegal" in the eyes of the law. Many children have been exiled to México; these are the children living in the shadows of Mexican diaspora, Los Retornos. This phenomenological study developed a conceptual framework to examine the effects in which being an exiled United States citizen living in Morelia, Michoacán, affected these many children and adolescents. Bourdieu's (1977) theoretical framework is used in this study and is based on his social, cultural capital concept; the assumption is that Los Retornos carry valuable sociocultural, bilingual and monoliterate capital that is endangered, unrecognized, replaceable, and not used to the best interest of students in schools. This study made use of this framework to answer the following questions: 1. How do Retorno families (nuclear and extended) develop the self-efficacy needed to preserve the social and cultural capital they bring with them to Michoacán? 2. How are communities and identity forms imagined and created in the context of this new migration shift? 3. How are Los Retornos responding to the involuntary shift (N=7) from the U.S to Michoacán? 4. How are teachers adjusting their classroom practices and curriculum to meet the academic needs of Los Retornos? The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to improve understanding of Los Retornos. This phenomenological case study is focused on identifying experiences Los Retornos encounter in their schools and family lives through their personal migration experience to illuminate how best to help them preserve the social and cultural, capital they bring with them. The findings from this study may assist educators and policy makers in developing interventions and policies that meet the needs of this cohort.

This dissertation provides a critical analysis of public administration's understanding of the relationship between rational thought and action in its discourse on ethics. It argues that rationalist ethics assume a particular relationship between thought and action: that good knowledge leads to good, proper action. While there have been many critiques of rationalist administrative ethics, scholars have not examined the way in which rationalism persists in the way in which the teaching of ethics is conducted. The use of the case study figures prominently in this. Thus, the dissertation explores the historical and theoretical intersection of rationalism, ethics, and teaching through the lens of the case study. It begins with a history of the pedagogical use of the case study and the institutional transformations of the university. While conventional accounts of the field locate its founding in the United States in the municipal reform movement, here the founding of the field of public administration is recast through connections to reforms in the university including changes in epistemic assumptions, pedagogical methods, and curricular changes in ethics in which the case study is central and remains so as the field develops. The dissertation then considers scholarship in public administration that raises questions about rationalist ethics. Three critical approaches are explored: recognition of the uncertainty and complexity of administrative practice, critique as unmasking of power relationships, and the shift of ethics from an epistemological to an ontological inquiry. The dissertation builds on the work in this third approach and shows how it attempts to articulate a non-rationalist, or immanent, ethics. This ethics is concerned with exploring the conditions that make possible mutually beneficial relationships and meaningful lives from which categorical norms of the good life could emerge. Drawing on the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, it is argued that the distinction Deleuze and Guattari make between "arborescent" and "rhizomatic" knowledge gets to the root of the tension between thought and action and offers an innovative and useful way to advance an immanent, non-rational ethics. The challenge digital technologies and the information society present to the field is considered to illustrate the need to rethink administrative ethics and also the particular usefulness of Deleuze and Guattari in doing so. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of pedagogical practices and classroom examples that encourage a rhizomatic understanding of the theory and practice of public administration.

In 2015, a major apparel retailer pioneered a value stream mapping project that addressed the order writing process between its merchandising team and an external vendor. This case follows the development and execution of the project and the challenge of sustaining the improvements rendered. Thorough analysis supports the recommendation for continued organizational support, a post-event auditing process, and specific metrics to indicate the project's success.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether a peer nursing student who presents a longitudinal case study on warfarin in a pharmacology course classroom influences prelicensure and postbaccalaureate nursing students' knowledge and perceived knowledge about warfarin. The study was a descriptive design that used a convenience sample of baccalaureate nursing students enrolled in two pharmacology courses. All participating students answered warfarin case-study questions and completed a self-demographic questionnaire, a knowledge pretest and posttest, and a self-efficacy questionnaire after the activity, which evaluated students' knowledge and perceived knowledge on 11 warfarin concepts. For all students (N = 89), the number of correct answers improved significantly between pretests and posttests for Items 2-11 (p < .0001; Wilcoxon signed-rank tests), which evaluated students' knowledge on warfarin's site of action, associated laboratory values, use of vitamin K, and food-drug interactions. However, no significant difference was seen in the number of correct answers for warfarin's mechanism of action. Comparing prelicensure and postbaccalaureate groups by Mann-Whitney tests, no significant difference was seen for pretest total scores (median 7.00, n = 55; median 7.50, n = 34; respectively; p = .399). Similarly, no difference was seen for posttest total scores by groups (prelicensure: median = 9.00, n =54; postbaccalaureate: median = 10.00, n = 32; p = .344). Overall, students in both groups agreed that they could identify and explain all 11 warfarin concepts. The Pearson correlation between the total posttest and total self-efficacy scores for the combined group was .338 (p = .003), demonstrating a low but significant correlation between students' posttest total scores and their perceived warfarin knowledge, as evaluated by the self-efficacy questionnaire.

This researcher set out to determine whether small businesses can achieve considerable business success by utilizing social media as a public relations tool to create a brand image. There is a substantial breadth of research regarding the social media successes of large companies, but the same is not true for small businesses. This researcher aims to add to the existing pool of literature dealing with small businesses and creating social media success. First, relevant literature was examined to determine the state of the small business landscape online and to identify best practices for social media. Then the researcher analyzed three published case studies that detailed social media campaigns from three different small businesses. The researcher used the information obtained in the literature review and case study analysis to create a comprehensive social media strategy for Crosswim, a small business based in Tempe, Arizona. The culmination of this research showed that small businesses can indeed create success and brand equity by implementing a strategic social media plan. It was uncovered that social media gives small business owners the tools to create a strategy that works best for them in terms of their business and in terms of the time the owners can devote to monitoring social media.

This thesis aims to explore the limitations for the definition of ‘human’, through analyzing augmented superheroes. A diagnostic tool was developed to measure these superheroes’ humanness through the criteria of the biological, social, and metaphysical definition for human. Augmented superheroes were selected due to the rise of scientific/technological augmentations and their effect on our understanding of ‘human’ within the three criteria. A general consensus of traits that made up human within each criteria was determined and used to assess each superhero. The six, permanently augmented, non alien heroes chosen to be analyzed were Ironman, Spiderman, Captain America, Wolverine, the Hulk, and Vision. Through their origin stories, their personal interactions with others, others reactions to them, and how they dealt with situations, the superheroes were judged on if they fit the current definition of human using the diagnostic tool. It was found that the Hulk and Vision failed to pass the definition using the tool while Ironman, Spiderman, Captain America, and Wolverine all met the majority of the requirements and thus passed as human by the current definition.

This paper is about youth leadership development in the context of South Sudan. Youth in South Sudan face numerous and complex challenges that prevent them from realizing their potential and contributing to the creation of peace, stability, and prosperity for themselves and their communities. Obstacles include, but are not limited, to poor quality and lack of access to education programs, increasing youth unemployment, the involvement of youth in the ongoing inter- and intra-ethnic conflicts, and the exclusion of youth from participating in meaningful and productive community activities. The presence of these challenges calls for programs that are informed by youth leadership development theory, research, and practice. In this paper, I present a review of scholarly literature on leadership theories pertinent to social change and youth development. I also conduct a study on three existing youth leadership development projects. Furthermore, I use the literature review and three case studies to draw design principles and curricular guidelines to inform a youth leadership program that I intend to establish in South Sudan. This draft framework will support my future initiative in facilitating programs that are designed to empower youth to achieve personal goals, while equipping them with the capacity to critically analyze and solve complex social problems. The road map towards the future program will also involve the identification of key partner institutions and organizations that can potentially support in designing and implementing the future project.

Hospitals constitute 9 percent of commercial energy consumption in the U.S. annually, though they only make up 2 percent of the U.S. commercial floor space. Consuming an average of 259,000 Btu per square foot, U.S. hospitals spend about 8.3 billion dollars on energy every year. Utilizing collaborative delivery method for hospital construction can effectively save healthcare business owners thousands of dollars while reducing construction time and resulting in a better product: a building that has fewer operational deficiencies and requires less maintenance. Healthcare systems are integrated by nature, and are rich in technical complexity to meet the needs of their various patients. In addition to being technologically and energy intensive, hospitals must meet health regulations while maintaining human comfort. The interdisciplinary nature of hospitals suggests that multiple perspectives would be valuable in optimizing the building design. Integrated project delivery provides a means to reaching the optimal design by emphasizing group collaboration and expertise of the architect, engineer, owner, builder, and hospital staff. In previous studies, IPD has proven to be particularly beneficial when it comes to highly complex projects, such as hospitals. To assess the effects of a high level of team collaboration in the delivery of a hospital, case studies were prepared on several hospitals that have been built in the past decade. The case studies each utilized some form of a collaborative delivery method, and each were successful in saving and/or redirecting time and money to other building components, achieving various certifications, recognitions, and awards, and satisfying the client. The purpose of this research is to determine key strategies in the construction of healthcare facilities that allow for quicker construction, greater monetary savings, and improved operational efficiency. This research aims to communicate the value of both "green building" and a high level of team collaboration in the hospital-building process.

Grief reaches across all human differences and boundaries. Grief, when it does not resolve on its own, is known as complicated grief. Parents of children who die are at increased risk for experiencing complicated grief. This case study seeks commonalities and possible contributing factors for the creation of a non-profit in reaction to the death of a child. This study finds that previous achievements such as completing a marathon or graduating from a graduate program may indicate the presence of characteristics like resilience that result in the creation of a non-profit.

Information Measurement Theory (IMT) is a concept which was devised for the purpose of understanding how information works in the universe. At its core, it states that 100% of information exists in the universe at any one time, and with enough perception, any event can be predicted based on the initial conditions preceding the event. With this idea in mind, the author of IMT developed the Kashiwagi Solution Model (KSM) which deals with how people best utilize the information present in the universe. Simply put, the ideas presented by KSM encourage people to think in a more logical manner through the utilization of relevant information. The following thesis details an autobiographical case study which focuses on the life of a college student undergoing severe depressive symptoms during the course of their academic career. The usage of concepts stemming from IMT and KSM are then used to determine the root causes of the depression in order to prevent it from ever happening again. The case study acts as a guide to others in order to better help them deal with similar situations that are happening with their lives while providing evidence that the concepts detailed by IMT and KSM are factually relevant.
