Winning records are critical to a team's morale, success, and future. As such, players need to perform their best when they are called into a game to ensure the best possible chance of contributing to the team's success. During the 2013 fall season of Arizona State's NCAA soccer team, twenty-five females had quantities measured, such as heart rate workload, weight loss and playing time, that were analyzed using a least squares regression line and other mathematical relationships with mathematical software. Equations and box plots were produced for each player in the hopes that the coaches could tailor practices to the athletes' bodies needs to increase performance and results for the upcoming fall 2014 season. The playing time and heart rate workload model suggests that increased playing time increases heart rate workload in a linear fashion, though the increase varies by player. The model for the team proposes that the heart rate workload changes in response to playing time according to the equation y=2.67x+127.41 throughout the season. The weight loss and heart rate workload model suggest that establishing a relationship between the two variables is complex since the linear and power regression models did not fit the data. Future studies can focus on the Rate of Perceived Exertion scale, which can supplement the heart rate workload and provide valuable information on players' fatigue levels.

Continue to Teach is a project motivated by the alarming rates of teacher attrition in Arizona and across the United States. The product is in the form of a website that gives current and future teachers resources in attempts to support them. The goal of providing these virtual resources is to positively influence teachers to stay in the profession. Each of the subsections of the website were thoughtfully selected based on extensive consideration of the research literature of the factors driving teachers' decisions to remain or leave the profession. I was personally motivated to complete this project because I am studying and practicing to become a teacher. Completing this research and project has compelled me to learn a great amount about the challenges surrounding this profession, and has assisted me in determining what I can do to stay personally motivated while helping others continue to teach as well.

This study examined the impact of Situation Presence Assessment Method (SPAM) administration on air traffic control (ATC) students’ task workload and performance in high-fidelity ATC simulations. ATC students performed high-fidelity en-route simulations in two conditions: baseline conditions (without SPAM questions) and SPAM conditions. The data collected show that while workload in the two conditions were not significantly different, there was a trend of higher mental workload in SPAM conditions than in baseline conditions. Performance immediately following SPAM questions was revealed to be poorer than that preceding the SPAM questions and that over the equivalent time periods in the baseline conditions. The results suggest that a "Ready" signal before a SPAM question may not be enough to eliminate the impact of SPAM administration on ATC students’ workload and performance in high-fidelity en-route simulations.

The study aimed to determine the relationship of subjective perception of wellness (Intrinsic Fatigue) and Global Positioning Satellite derived workload amongst elite high school soccer players. Twenty-nine (16.4 ± 1.54 years) male participants completed a mobile app-based wellness questionnaire comprising of 6 subjective markers prior to 10 workload variables being measured by STATSports 10Hz GPS units later that same day. Only instances where both wellness and GPS reports qualified for analyses (N=231 exposures). No significant differences were reported in reported wellness within- or between-weeks (p > 0.05) with average Effect Sizes (ES) ranging from 0.001 to 0.15. Total Distance (TD) was significantly different (p < 0.05) within week. All GPS variables except TD and Distance per Minute (DpM) were significantly different (p < 0.05) between-weeks. Average GPS ES sizes ranged from 0.02 to 0.58. Wellness and GPS or it’s ESs were not correlated, with correlations ranging from -1.000 to 0.207. The results suggest monitoring of GPS reports to be a practical method of monitoring variation in player workload but does not support subjective questionnaires as a means of monitoring player wellness reflecting these workload variations in youth populations.

Despite the prevalence of teams in complex sociotechnical systems, current approaches to understanding workload tend to focus on the individual operator. However, research suggests that team workload has emergent properties and is not necessarily equivalent to the aggregate of individual workload. Assessment of communications provides a means of examining aspects of team workload in highly interdependent teams. This thesis set out to explore how communications are associated with team workload and performance under high task demand in all-human and human–autonomy teams in a command and control task. A social network analysis approach was used to analyze the communications of 30 different teams, each with three members operating in a command and control task environment of over a series of five missions. Teams were assigned to conditions differentiated by their composition with either a naïve participant, a trained confederate, or a synthetic agent in the pilot role. Social network analysis measures of centralization and intensity were used to assess differences in communications between team types and under different levels of demand, and relationships between communication measures, performance, and workload distributions were also examined. Results indicated that indegree centralization was greater in the all-human control teams than in the other team types, but degree centrality standard deviation and intensity were greatest in teams with a highly trained experimenter pilot. In all three team types, the intensity of communications and degree centrality standard deviation appeared to decrease during the high demand mission, but indegree and outdegree centralization did not. Higher communication intensity was associated with more efficient target processing and more successful target photos per mission, but a clear relationship between measures of performance and decentralization of communications was not found.
