Process migration is a heavily studied research area and has a number of applications in distributed systems. Process migration means transferring a process running on one machine to another such that it resumes execution from the point at which it was suspended. The conventional approach to implement process migration is to move the entire state information of the process (including hardware context, virtual memory, files etc.) from one machine to another. Copying all the state information is costly. This thesis proposes and demonstrates a new approach of migrating a process between two cores of Intel Single Chip Cloud (SCC), an experimental 48-core processor by Intel, with each core running a separate instance of the operating system. In this method the amount of process state to be transferred from one core's memory to another is reduced by making use of special registers called Lookup tables (LUTs) present on each core of SCC. Thus this new approach is faster than the conventional method.

Attribute Based Access Control (ABAC) mechanisms have been attracting a lot of interest from the research community in recent times. This is especially because of the flexibility and extensibility it provides by using attributes assigned to subjects as the basis for access control. ABAC enables an administrator of a server to enforce access policies on the data, services and other such resources fairly easily. It also accommodates new policies and changes to existing policies gracefully, thereby making it a potentially good mechanism for implementing access control in large systems, particularly in today's age of Cloud Computing. However management of the attributes in ABAC environment is an area that has been little touched upon. Having a mechanism to allow multiple ABAC based systems to share data and resources can go a long way in making ABAC scalable. At the same time each system should be able to specify their own attribute sets independently. In the research presented in this document a new mechanism is proposed that would enable users to share resources and data in a cloud environment using ABAC techniques in a distributed manner. The focus is mainly on decentralizing the access policy specifications for the shared data so that each data owner can specify the access policy independent of others. The concept of ontologies and semantic web is introduced in the ABAC paradigm that would help in giving a scalable structure to the attributes and also allow systems having different sets of attributes to communicate and share resources.

With the increasing user demand for low latency, elastic provisioning of computing resources coupled with ubiquitous and on-demand access to real-time data, cloud computing has emerged as a popular computing paradigm to meet growing user demands. However, with the introduction and rising use of wear- able technology and evolving uses of smart-phones, the concept of Internet of Things (IoT) has become a prevailing notion in the currently growing technology industry. Cisco Inc. has projected a data creation of approximately 403 Zetabytes (ZB) by 2018. The combination of bringing benign devices and connecting them to the web has resulted in exploding service and data aggregation requirements, thus requiring a new and innovative computing platform. This platform should have the capability to provide robust real-time data analytics and resource provisioning to clients, such as IoT users, on-demand. Such a computation model would need to function at the edge-of-the-network, forming a bridge between the large cloud data centers and the distributed connected devices.

This research expands on the notion of bringing computational power to the edge- of-the-network, and then integrating it with the cloud computing paradigm whilst providing services to diverse IoT-based applications. This expansion is achieved through the establishment of a new computing model that serves as a platform for IoT-based devices to communicate with services in real-time. We name this paradigm as Gateway-Oriented Reconfigurable Ecosystem (GORE) computing. Finally, this thesis proposes and discusses the development of a policy management framework for accommodating our proposed computational paradigm. The policy framework is designed to serve both the hosted applications and the GORE paradigm by enabling them to function more efficiently. The goal of the framework is to ensure uninterrupted communication and service delivery between users and their applications.

Interactive remote e-learning is one of the youngest and most popular methods that is used in today's teaching method. WebRTC, on the other hand, has become the popular concept and method in real time communication. Unlike the old fashioned Adobe Flash, user will communicate directly to each other rather than calling server as the middle man. The world is changing from plug-in to web-browser. However, the WebRTC have not been widely used for school education.

By taking into consideration of the WebRTC solution for data transferring, we propose a new Cloud based interactive multimedia which enables virtual lab learning environment. Three modules were proposed along with an efficient solution for achieving optimized network bandwidth. The One-to-Many communication was introduced in the video conferencing and scalability was tested for the application. The key technical contribution is to establish a sufficient system that designed to utilize the WebRTC in its best way in educational world in the Vlab platform and reduces the tool cost and improves online learning experience.

Corporations invest considerable resources to create, preserve and analyze

their data; yet while organizations are interested in protecting against

unauthorized data transfer, there lacks a comprehensive metric to discriminate

what data are at risk of leaking.

This thesis motivates the need for a quantitative leakage risk metric, and

provides a risk assessment system, called Whispers, for computing it. Using

unsupervised machine learning techniques, Whispers uncovers themes in an

organization's document corpus, including previously unknown or unclassified

data. Then, by correlating the document with its authors, Whispers can

identify which data are easier to contain, and conversely which are at risk.

Using the Enron email database, Whispers constructs a social network segmented

by topic themes. This graph uncovers communication channels within the

organization. Using this social network, Whispers determines the risk of each

topic by measuring the rate at which simulated leaks are not detected. For the

Enron set, Whispers identified 18 separate topic themes between January 1999

and December 2000. The highest risk data emanated from the legal department

with a leakage risk as high as 60%.

This thesis proposed a novel approach to establish the trust model in a social network scenario based on users' emails. Email is one of the most important social connections nowadays. By analyzing email exchange activities among users, a social network trust model can be established to judge the trust rate between each two users. The whole trust checking process is divided into two steps: local checking and remote checking. Local checking directly contacts the email server to calculate the trust rate based on user's own email communication history. Remote checking is a distributed computing process to get help from user's social network friends and built the trust rate together. The email-based trust model is built upon a cloud computing framework called MobiCloud. Inside MobiCloud, each user occupies a virtual machine which can directly communicate with others. Based on this feature, the distributed trust model is implemented as a combination of local analysis and remote analysis in the cloud. Experiment results show that the trust evaluation model can give accurate trust rate even in a small scale social network which does not have lots of social connections. With this trust model, the security in both social network services and email communication could be improved.

Lighting systems and air-conditioning systems are two of the largest energy consuming end-uses in buildings. Lighting control in smart buildings and homes can be automated by having computer controlled lights and window blinds along with illumination sensors that are distributed in the building, while temperature control can be automated by having computer controlled air-conditioning systems. However, programming actuators in a large-scale environment for buildings and homes can be time consuming and expensive. This dissertation presents an approach that algorithmically sets up the control system that can automate any building without requiring custom programming. This is achieved by imbibing the system self calibrating and self learning abilities.

For lighting control, the dissertation describes how the problem is non-deterministic polynomial-time hard(NP-Hard) but can be resolved by heuristics. The resulting system controls blinds to ensure uniform lighting and also adds artificial illumination to ensure light coverage remains adequate at all times of the day, while adjusting for weather and seasons. In the absence of daylight, the system resorts to artificial lighting.

For temperature control, the dissertation describes how the temperature control problem is modeled using convex quadratic programming. The impact of every air conditioner on each sensor at a particular time is learnt using a linear regression model. The resulting system controls air-conditioning equipments to ensure the maintenance of user comfort and low cost of energy consumptions. The system can be deployed in large scale environments. It can accept multiple target setpoints at a time, which improves the flexibility and efficiency of cooling systems requiring temperature control.

The methods proposed work as generic control algorithms and are not preprogrammed for a particular place or building. The feasibility, adaptivity and scalability features of the system have been validated through various actual and simulated experiments.

Mobile Cloud computing has shown its capability to support mobile devices for

provisioning computing, storage and communication resources. A distributed mobile

cloud service system called "POEM" is presented to manage the mobile cloud resource

and compose mobile cloud applications. POEM considers resource management not

only between mobile devices and clouds, but also among mobile devices. It implements

both computation offloading and service composition features. The proposed POEM

solution is demonstrated by using OSGi and XMPP techniques.

Offloading is one major type of collaborations between mobile device and cloud

to achieve less execution time and less energy consumption. Offloading decisions for

mobile cloud collaboration involve many decision factors. One of important decision

factors is the network unavailability. This report presents an offloading decision model

that takes network unavailability into consideration. The application execution time

and energy consumption in both ideal network and network with some unavailability

are analyzed. Based on the presented theoretical model, an application partition

algorithm and a decision module are presented to produce an offloading decision that

is resistant to network unavailability.

Existing offloading models mainly focus on the one-to-one offloading relation. To

address the multi-factor and multi-site offloading mobile cloud application scenarios,

a multi-factor multi-site risk-based offloading model is presented, which abstracts the

offloading impact factors as for offloading benefit and offloading risk. The offloading

decision is made based on a comprehensive offloading risk evaluation. This presented

model is generic and expendable. Four offloading impact factors are presented to show

the construction and operation of the presented offloading model, which can be easily

extended to incorporate more factors to make offloading decision more comprehensive.

The overall offloading benefits and risks are aggregated based on the mobile cloud

users' preference.

The offloading topology may change during the whole application life. A set of

algorithms are presented to address the service topology reconfiguration problem in

several mobile cloud representative application scenarios, i.e., they are modeled as

finite horizon scenarios, infinite horizon scenarios, and large state space scenarios to

represent ad hoc, long-term, and large-scale mobile cloud service composition scenarios,

respectively.

The Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi) framework is a standard of module system and service platform that implements a complete and dynamic component model. Currently most of OSGi implementations are implemented by Java, which has similarities of Android language. With the emergence of Android operating system, due to the similarities between Java and Android, the integration of module system and service platform from OSGi to Android system attracts more and more attention. How to make OSGi run in Android is a hot topic, further, how to find a mechanism to enable communication between OSGi and Android system is a more advanced area than simply making OSGi running in Android. This paper, which aimed to fulfill SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) and CBA (Component Based Architecture), proposed a solution on integrating Felix OSGi platform with Android system in order to build up Distributed OSGi framework between mobile phones upon XMPP protocol. And in this paper, it not only successfully makes OSGi run on Android, but also invents a mechanism that makes a seamless collaboration between these two platforms.

An acute and crucial societal problem is the energy consumed in existing commercial buildings. There are 1.5 million commercial buildings in the U.S. with only about 3% being built each year. Hence, existing buildings need to be properly operated and maintained for several decades. Application of integrated centralized control systems in buildings could lead to more than 50% energy savings.

This research work demonstrates an innovative adaptive integrated lighting control approach which could achieve significant energy savings and increase indoor comfort in high performance office buildings. In the first phase of the study, a predictive algorithm was developed and validated through experiments in an actual test room. The objective was to regulate daylight on a specified work plane by controlling the blind slat angles. Furthermore, a sensor-based integrated adaptive lighting controller was designed in Simulink which included an innovative sensor optimization approach based on genetic algorithm to minimize the number of sensors and efficiently place them in the office. The controller was designed based on simple integral controllers. The objective of developed control algorithm was to improve the illuminance situation in the office through controlling the daylight and electrical lighting. To evaluate the performance of the system, the controller was applied on experimental office model in Lee et al.’s research study in 1998. The result of the developed control approach indicate a significantly improvement in lighting situation and 1-23% and 50-78% monthly electrical energy savings in the office model, compared to two static strategies when the blinds were left open and closed during the whole year respectively.
