Africa is the area of the largest economic water scarcity on earth, with multiple countries, political systems, and geographies involved. Additionally, water scarcity affects more countries in sub-Saharan African than anywhere else on earth, with consequences like waterborne diseases, loss of agricultural development, educational setbacks, and security threats. This thesis synthesizes data on the diverse geographies and politics involved in building a sustainable African water system. It presents historical and present technologies, costs, and problems implementing sustainable potable water solutions, and suggests regional differences and individualized solutions, pointing out advantages and disadvantages of damming, boreholes, open wells, open-source water, and sewer systems. It goes on to discuss grant programs for water and wastewater solutions and technologies. Finally it addresses two divergent, yet equally important data models for African water planning, combining their contributions in order to gain insight into the problem that neither alone can. The research overlaps aquifer and demographic data to see where water should be a priority in Africa. The author finds that hydrology as well as demographic data, when combined, point to the greatest water need in the Sahel. However, many growing cities are situated in areas with high aquifer levels making borehole technology some of the most economical as well as sustainable water sourcing. Recommendations include cultural humility, attention to political and environmental consequences of solutions, and cost-effective ways of addressing the lack of access to clean drinking water in Africa.

This paper is based on a research undertaking to understand China's presence in Africa and how this relates to Western relations with the continent. The research attempts to determine which option, Europe/US or the Chinese, may be the most suitable partner in development for Africa, as well as discuss what can be done to maximize the benefits, and mitigate the negative aspects of that relationship. A comparative analysis approach is used to judge the viability of each partner, and each is assessed according to a set of criteria, including the following: 1. Equitable and Respectful Relations 2. Maintenance of Sovereignty 3. Ability and Willingness to Finance Sustainable Development in Africa 4. Shared Experience and Understanding 5. Historical Element Drawing on the collected research presented in this document, the major finding is that the Chinese have a fundamentally different approach to aid and investment, and harbor conceptually distinctive ideas regarding development than the West. Based on the outcome of the comparative study against the above criteria, it is suggested that Africa may benefit from selecting China as a partner in achieving its own sustainable development, and suggestions are offered to effectively leverage this partnership.

This paper is about youth leadership development in the context of South Sudan. Youth in South Sudan face numerous and complex challenges that prevent them from realizing their potential and contributing to the creation of peace, stability, and prosperity for themselves and their communities. Obstacles include, but are not limited, to poor quality and lack of access to education programs, increasing youth unemployment, the involvement of youth in the ongoing inter- and intra-ethnic conflicts, and the exclusion of youth from participating in meaningful and productive community activities. The presence of these challenges calls for programs that are informed by youth leadership development theory, research, and practice. In this paper, I present a review of scholarly literature on leadership theories pertinent to social change and youth development. I also conduct a study on three existing youth leadership development projects. Furthermore, I use the literature review and three case studies to draw design principles and curricular guidelines to inform a youth leadership program that I intend to establish in South Sudan. This draft framework will support my future initiative in facilitating programs that are designed to empower youth to achieve personal goals, while equipping them with the capacity to critically analyze and solve complex social problems. The road map towards the future program will also involve the identification of key partner institutions and organizations that can potentially support in designing and implementing the future project.
