The purpose of this study was to determine how a profile owner's (PO's) response to a

friend's comment on Facebook impacts social attractiveness of the PO. A 3 (response type: denial, humble, no response) x 2 (sex of the participant) between-subjects experiment was conducted using 297 participants who were recruited from a large public university and a community college in the southwest United States. It was hypothesized that being humble and accepting of implied negative behavior statements would increase the social attractiveness of the profile owner compared to denial or no response. A one- way ANCOVA with social desirability as the covariate was used to analyze the data. Results were non-significant for the main effects of response type but were significant for the main effects of the sex of the participant with male participants finding the profile owners more socially attractive than female participants. The results suggest that a PO's response to a negative Friend comment does not impact the PO's social attractiveness.

The purpose of this study is to identify and examine how top revenue-generating nonprofits in Japan and the U.S. use Facebook, and to compare the differences. The two countries were selected due to the differing levels of government support for social welfare and related programs as the level of government support for social welfare tends to affect the size of a country’s nonprofit. To compare nonprofits in two countries, the International Classification of Nonprofit Organizations (ICNPO) was applied. U.S. nonprofits tend to offer more information on their Facebook profile compared to Japanese nonprofits. Additionally, 83% of nonprofits in the U.S. had a Facebook profile, while only 67% of Japanese nonprofits had a Facebook profile. As for engagement, this research shows that Japanese nonprofits tend to have better engagement compared to U.S. nonprofits. Additionally, with respect to post types, in the U.S. it is clear that for nonprofits in the Health category, posting images helps to promote engagement with users. However, in Japan, the same is true only for the Social Service category. While images tend to help increase engagement, posts with videos lower engagement for the U.S. cultural, health, philanthropic, and international nonprofits. However, in Japan, posting videos has a positive correlation with engagement for social service and environmental nonprofits. In addition, for Japanese nonprofits, posting an external link hurts engagement if the nonprofit is in either the Health or Philanthropic categories, which is the same for the U.S. However, posting an external link increases engagement for nonprofits in the Environmental category in Japan, but increases engagement for nonprofits in the Cultural category in the U.S. With respect to post content type, requesting donations through external links caused decreased comment based engagement for U.S. nonprofits. For Japanese nonprofits, including videos on posts requesting volunteers or donations increases comment based engagement. While some of these results are surprising, they indicate that different approaches are needed in different nonprofit categories and in different countries if nonprofits want to maximize user engagement.

The secret Facebook group ////sads only/// was formed in October 2015 to provide a safe space for women and trans and nonbinary people to express their emotions, a sort of digital support group. Members can post individually about things happening in their lives, comment on other members’ posts with advice or support, and contribute to discussion threads. Common subject matters include mental health, relationships, sexuality, gender identity, friendships, careers, family, art, education, and body image. The group’s location on Facebook adds to its utility – it can be an alternative site of community-making and communication, away from the often toxic, triggering, or just plain negative posts that clog up social media news feeds and the unsolicited comments that get appended. The group is informed by principles of affect theory, and in particular, sad girl theory, which was developed by the artist Audrey Wollen. She suggests that femme sadness is a site of power and not just vulnerability. In her view, sadness isn’t passive existence, but instead, an act of resistance. Specifically, it uses the body in a way that is crucial to many definitions of activism, incorporating the violence of revolution, protest, and struggle that has historically been gendered as male. This thesis examines the history and future directions of the ///sads only/// group as well as its theoretical underpinnings and the implications of its intervention, considering such perspectives as cultural studies, gender performance, identity formation, digital citizenship, mental health, and feminist activism.
