Ciao is a product and digital application that allows people with celiac disease to gain control over their health as well as lead a more freeing life. The product is a compact cooking set that keeps utensils safe from the common cross-contamination that can be life-threatening to a person with celiac disease. The application allows people to find new restaurants that will be safe for them to eat at, scan the barcode of common food products for 8 of the most common allergens, and provide the most up to date research about celiac disease. Within the app, they can also find a sense of community by connecting with other members.

Abstract: Within this insights report, I gather information (this includes primary and secondary research) pertinent to Lupus and Lupus patients, and I segment it into topics of either user, business, technology, or social (sustainable) related information. Within these topics, I analyze qualitative data and create charts to graphically depict my findings regarding Lupus symptoms and products pertinent to symptom relief. Through these graphs, I then find product opportunity gaps (POGs). For example, how to alleviate pain, provide energy, and reduce stress. After finding as many product opportunity gaps as possible, I then pick my top areas of interest. In the future, I will have brainstorming sessions dedicated to these POGs, and from these sessions, I can begin designing possible products to help monitor the systems, and alleviate the symptoms, of Lupus patients.

The purpose of this research project is to outline the design process and to uncover some of the considerations that designers must keep in mind in an effort to design more empathetically. These will include a focus on appropriate aesthetics, user experience design, and designing for innovation. These findings are then applied to a three-part design project to illustrate the importance of these guidelines.

Bioluminescent algae has long fascinated humans as a beautiful natural phenomenon. This creative project uses bioluminescent algae to push the limit of biomimicry, using the algae not as a model but as a technology. Through experimentation with algae samples and industrial design, two potential applications of bioluminescent algae as a sustainable lighting technology were generated. One design focuses on indoor, private lighting, while the other focuses on outdoor, public lighting. Both outcomes attempt to solve problems generated by nighttime lighting including light pollution, wasted electricity usage, and negative impacts on human and environmental health while retaining the benefits of safety and convenience.

Dr. Dish: Water Conservation for a New Lifestyle

Description

Drought is one of the most pressing issues affecting the future of the standard of living here in Phoenix. With the threat of water rationing and steep price hikes looming

Drought is one of the most pressing issues affecting the future of the standard of living here in Phoenix. With the threat of water rationing and steep price hikes looming on the horizon for water customers in California, the desert southwest, and in drought-stricken communities worldwide, industrial designers are in a prime position to help improve the experience of water conservation so that consumers are willing to start taking conscious steps toward rethinking their relationship with water usage.
In a research group, several designers sought to understand the depth and complexity of this highly politicized issue by interviewing a wide variety of stakeholders, including sustainability experts, landscapers, water company executives, small business owners, reservoir forest rangers, and many more. Data synthesis led to the conclusion that residential water use is a lifestyle issue, and the only real way to conserve involves a significant shift in the collective idea of an “ideal” home—lawns, pools, and overwatered landscaping contribute to 70% of all water use by residences in the Phoenix area. The only real way to conserve involves increasing population density and creating communal green spaces.
DR. DISH is a dishwashing device that is meant to fit into the high-density living spaces that are rapidly being built in the face of the massive exodus of people into the world’s cities. To help busy apartment and condominium dwellers conserve water and time, DR. DISH converts a standard kitchen sink into a small dishwasher, which uses significantly less water than hand-washing dishes or rinsing dishes before putting them into a conventional dishwasher. Using advanced filtration technology and a powerful rinse cycle, a load dishes can be cleaned with about 2 gallons of water. Fully automating the dishwashing process also saves the user time and minimizes unpleasant contact with food residue and grease.
This device is meant to have a significant impact upon the water use of households that do not have a dishwasher, or simply do not use their dishwasher. With a low target price point and myriad convenient features, DR. DISH is a high-tech solution that promises water savings at a time when every effort toward conservation is absolutely critical. As we move toward a new era in determining water rights and imposing mandatory restrictions upon each and every person living in affected areas, creating conservation solutions that will be relevant for the lifestyles of the future is especially important, and the agility of designers in coming up with products that quickly cut consumer water consumption will be a key factor in determining whether humanity will be able to adapt to a new era in our relationship with natural resources.

After researching pediatric cancer experiences, an opportunity emerged creating a less intimidating environment for children undergoing chemotherapy. By means of adding a creative component to their IV pole and disguising machinery, children will be a part of an Imagination Voyage adventure. Creative themes allow for a journey on a pirate ship, or being in a fantasy castle by captivating children in playtime. The design allows for a frightening experience to become a positive one.

My thesis is on the subject of mentoring. I researched the benefits and the styles of programs available and then used my research to create a survey to give to IDSA national members to see what they believe would make a good mentoring program. From there I tried to improve the current ASU IDSA mentoring program.

My thesis explores the development of a new treatment option for children with Amblyopia. I did a lot of research into existing treatment options as well as interviewing patients and their parents do figure out why these treatments were not working. I interviewed a pediatric ophthalmologist to better understand this condition from their point of view. I also did a competitive analysis to see who else was in this marketplace. From the insights I gathered I was able to create a user journey map to see where the most problems arose during the experience from Diagnoses to end of treatment. With this research I was able to design a new treatment plan that was focused on empathizing with the user. I developed several concepts ranging from lo-fi to blue sky. I tested these concepts by making models and getting feedback from the user. I developed the actual design of the glasses through sketching and model making. I tested the ergonomics and design with the help of my classmates. The solution is a combination of smart glasses and an app. The smart glasses function as a replacement of traditional and popular patching by dimming one lens to block vision to the strong eye. This forces the weak eye to be used. The app is used to encourage kids to use the glasses more often through games and challenges. The challenges give rewards for wearing the glasses for an extended period of time. The games are used to increase of effectiveness of the treatment. Research showed that video games like Tetris forces the eye to focus and be used more than in daily life. This solution makes the treatment experience positive instead of negative as it was with other treatments.
