Four Souvenirs for Violin and Piano was composed by Paul Schoenfeld (b.1947) in 1990 as a showpiece, spotlighting the virtuosity of both the violin and piano in equal measure. Each movement is a modern interpretation of a folk or popular genre, re- envisioned over intricate jazz harmonies and rhythms. The work was commissioned by violinist Lev Polyakin, who specifically requested some short pieces that could be performed in a local jazz establishment named Night Town in Cleveland, Ohio. The result is a work that is approximately fifteen minutes in length. Schoenfeld is a respected composer in the contemporary classical music community, whose Café Music (1986) for piano trio has recently become a staple of the standard chamber music repertoire. Many of his other works, however, remain in relative obscurity. It is the focus of this document to shed light on at least one other notable composition; Four Souvenirs for Violin and Piano. Among the topics to be discussed regarding this piece are a brief history behind the genesis of this composition, a structural summary of the entire work and each of its movements, and an appended practice guide based on interview and coaching sessions with the composer himself. With this project, I hope to provide a better understanding and appreciation of this work.

Motor behavior is prone to variable conditions and deviates further in disorders affecting the nervous system. A combination of environmental and neural factors impacts the amount of uncertainty. Although the influence of these factors on estimating endpoint positions have been examined, the role of limb configuration on endpoint variability has been mostly ignored. Characterizing the influence of arm configuration (i.e. intrinsic factors) would allow greater comprehension of sensorimotor integration and assist in interpreting exaggerated movement variability in patients. In this study, subjects were placed in a 3-D virtual reality environment and were asked to move from a starting position to one of three targets in the frontal plane with and without visual feedback of the moving limb. The alternating of visual feedback during trials increased uncertainty between the planning and execution phases. The starting limb configurations, adducted and abducted, were varied in separate blocks. Arm configurations were setup by rotating along the shoulder-hand axis to maintain endpoint position. The investigation hypothesized: 1) patterns of endpoint variability of movements would be dependent upon the starting arm configuration and 2) any differences observed would be more apparent in conditions that withheld visual feedback. The results indicated that there were differences in endpoint variability between arm configurations in both visual conditions, but differences in variability increased when visual feedback was withheld. Overall this suggests that in the presence of visual feedback, planning of movements in 3D space mostly uses coordinates that are arm configuration independent. On the other hand, without visual feedback, planning of movements in 3D space relies substantially on intrinsic coordinates.

Sofia Gubaidulina’s Dancer on a Tightrope (Der Seiltänzer, 1993) for violin and piano is an excellent example of the sonic capabilities of both instruments. To convey the balance and uncertainty of a circus act, Gubaidulina makes ample use of rhythmic variation, flexible melodic gestures, compound meters, dissonance, and indeterminacy in notation of musical time. Due to the intricate nature of both parts, this can be a difficult work to perform accurately. This paper is an accompanying document to the score to explain notations, suggest performance techniques for both instruments, and provide a thorough analysis of the complete work.

Students of Gubaidulina’s music can find numerous studies detailing her biography as a Soviet and post-Soviet composer. There are many dissertations on her string works, including the string quartets and string trio. However, there is no performer’s guide or existing study that would provide insight to Dancer. Most of the existing literature on Gubaidulina is not based on sketches but relies on analysis of published sources.

In researching this document, I drew upon the manuscript collection for Dancer on a Tightrope housed at the Paul Sacher archives in Basel, Switzerland. I compare sketches with the published score and analyze the work’s structure, melodic aspects, harmony, timbre, and practical applications of the extended notation. I will also compare Dancer on

a Tightrope to Gubaidulina’s works from the same period, violin writing, and other chamber music. Many of the rhythmic and pitch ambiguities in the published score will be clarified by a sketch study of the piece. For assistance with piano notation and performance, I suggest techniques for the most careful way to play inside the instrument to avoid damage.

I contextualize Gubaidulina within a Soviet and international context. It is essential to view her work within a broader twentieth-century framework, her life as a composer in the USSR, and in light of broader socio-political trends. Gubaidulina is one of the foremost Soviet composers who has earned international recognition. This performer’s guide will advance and encourage performances of Dancer on a Tightrope and help disseminate knowledge about this work.

Given his position of importance during his life alongside César Franck, Claude Debussy, and Camille Saint-Säens, Pierné’s musical oeuvre has largely gone unrecognized in the modern musical canon. Scholarly literature on Pierné is severely limited; currently, there is only

Given his position of importance during his life alongside César Franck, Claude Debussy, and Camille Saint-Säens, Pierné’s musical oeuvre has largely gone unrecognized in the modern musical canon. Scholarly literature on Pierné is severely limited; currently, there is only one identified biography about Pierné, written in French by author Georges Masson ain 1987. To date, no formal analysis exists of Pierné’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, Opus 36 (1900). This document provides an account of Pierné’s life and style, gleaned in particular from this author’s original English translation of Masson’s definitive text. It also delivers the first known scholarly musical analysis of the sonata. Each chapter discusses a particular movement in depth, considering the elements of Structure, Harmony, Melody, Rhythm, and Texture, while illustrating contextual trends and potential influences across all three movements. The document concludes with the author’s original score analysis charts as well as a comprehensive bibliography. The discussion herein illuminates aspects of Pierné, and specifically his sonata for violin and piano, to promote greater awareness of a composer whose work merits elevated recognition beyond his current reputation of semi-obscurity.

More and more Taiwanese composers have been internationally recognizednowadays. However, their works have received scarce attention compared to their Western counterparts, even within Taiwan. Ming-Hsiu Yen (b. 1980) is a perfect example of an active composer whose works have been awarded many international prizes and performed worldwide, and yet there are few published studies that promote deeper understanding of her compositional language. This paper is the explanatory document for a lecture recital presented by the author. Four of Yen’s compositions for piano are examined, namely The Forgotten Corner (2005), “The Core” and “Frozen March” from Movements (2002-2005), and Fantasy Amour (2013). These works are discussed from both compositional and performance perspectives. After a brief biography of Yen and an overview of her piano compositions, the four works are given detailed description focusing on their coherence created by specific elements. Performance suggestions for each work are provided as well. The discussion offers insight into the musical organization of these pieces and Yen’s unifying techniques. It is hoped that this information will be beneficial to pianists interested in this composer and the repertoire of contemporary Taiwanese piano music.
