COVID-19 has proved that our society can be adaptable in the most unexpected situations. Chaos and fear struck the nation causing people to react in a variety of ways in an attempt to protect their own self interests. The retail space has had to adjust in large scales, making the shopping experience safer both for the customer and the employees. I was able to experience this first hand at Target, working there many years previous to and during the pandemic, getting to see the shift in consumer patterns. I noticed customers would purchase more products in one department, then the next month it would shift to another department. This paper will analyze those shifts in sales trends both departmentaly and within shopping methods at Target to help identify the largest changes and the possible reasons behind these.

This thesis focuses on the increasing emphasis on sustainability within the fashion industry and how brands, specifically H&M, can increase their market share through updating their in-store retail strategy. Seven common retail strategies are analyzed and recommendations in each area are made to enhance H&M’s emphasis on sustainability. To support these potential recommendations, two focus groups were conducted to evaluate some potential in-store marketing elements. Upon the conclusion of the focus group research, participant’s thoughts were taken into consideration to revise the recommended retail strategies. Overall, by implementing the recommended retail marketing strategies, H&M can incorporate their Conscious line more fully within their stores and promote their new sustainable focus to further their brand in the future.

As consumer preferences have evolved, and their demand for convenience and expedited service has increased, e-commerce has been a become a preferred channel for making purchases. What started out as a medium for purchasing everyday goods, such as clothing, has become a vast marketplace where buyers can find just about anything they need or want online – even groceries.

It is a widely accepted fact that the fashion industry is the second most unsustainable industry in the world, just behind oil (Qutab, 2016). Although some research would like to suggest that fashion is more sustainable than it actually is, it is indisputably a huge contributor to waste and something obviously needs to change (Friedman, 2018). When people hear about how unsustainable the fashion industry is, they usually think about fast fashion and how quickly clothes are being produced, purchased, and then discarded. What most people probably do not think about is that visual merchandising is also a large reason the fashion industry is considered so unsustainable. Visual merchandising is the act of displaying merchandise in a way that makes it attractive to consumers (Business Dictionary, n.d.). For example, most of the props, signage, decor, and fixturing that are used to create the whimsical window displays seen on Michigan Avenue or Rodeo Drive are simply thrown in the trash after use. This is a problem because the turnover for window displays is almost as fast as it is for merchandise. Tons of materials are trashed week after week, season after season, and year after year. As a fashion minor and someone who works in visual merchandising for two different companies, I have seen firsthand just how much waste is created from making a store look beautiful. Because of this, I wanted my creative project to highlight the issue of sustainability in the fashion industry, and more specifically, in visual merchandising. The goal of this project is to demonstrate that you can create a beautiful and captivating window display using recycled materials. To do this, I created three pieces to be used in a window display that I constructed out of discarded props, signage, and decor that I collected from different stores such as Crate & Barrel, Michael Kors, and Free People. A display that is made out of recycled materials does not need to look like a pile of garbage, but can look just as beautiful and inspiring as a display made entirely of new materials. In creating these three pieces out of recycled materials, I aim to prove that visual merchandising can be more sustainable in ways that are not as difficult as one might think, and help spark a change in the fashion industry as a whole.

This thesis examines the applications of the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence within small-to-medium sized retail businesses. These technologies have become a common aspect of a modern business environment, yet there remains a level of unfamiliarity with these concepts for business owners to fully utilize these tools. The complexity behind IoT and AI has been simplified to provide benefits for a brick and mortar business store in regards to security, logistics, profit optimization, operations, and analytics. While these technologies can contribute to a business’s success, they potentially come with a high and unattainable financial cost. In order to investigate which aspects of businesses can benefit the most from these technologies, interviews with small-to-medium business owners were conducted and paired with an analysis of published research. These interviews provided specific pain points and issues that could potentially be solved by these technologies. The analysis conducted in this thesis gives a detailed summary of this research and provides a business model for two small businesses to optimize their Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence to solve these pain points, while staying in their financial budget.

Single-use plastic has rapidly increased pollution in the United States, and the urgency to address its growing consequences is a complex undertaking. Significantly contributing to plastic pollution is the waste of single-use beverage plastics like cups and straws. In order to make impactful changes in the supply chain of single-use beverage plastics, we must first understand the stakeholders involved and the current extent of their actions. Therefore, this paper will investigate how stakeholders elicit sustainable changes to improve supply chain practices in this particular situation. We will use principles of sustainable supply chain management including corporate social responsibility and the triple bottom line model as the theoretical framework. Methodology consists of a stakeholder analysis where we conduct literature review, a consumer survey analysis, and interviews with industry experts to examine how various stakeholders elicit sustainably focused change. Essential insights made will be to understand different stakeholder actions and perspectives in relation to single-use beverage plastics, and how they contribute to creating sustainable changes in the larger context of plastic pollution control.

This thesis serves to demonstrate how a fictional private equity firm would acquire a company through an LBO. The project provides insight onto what private equity firms do, the background of Foot Locker, and an industry analysis on the sector that Foot Locker operates in. The thesis looks to provide a deeper understanding of the fair value of Foot Locker using a discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis, comparable company analysis, and precedent transaction analysis. For this study, I visited twenty Sprouts Farmers Market locations across the Phoenix-metro area to determine the company’s in-store strategy to make their locations a destination that customers pleasantly anticipate visiting. For this study, I visited twenty Sprouts Farmers Market locations across the Phoenix-metro area to determine the company’s in-store strategy to make their locations a destination that customers pleasantly anticipate visiting. As a business student myself and a Sprouts employee, I have familiarity with the company and desired to learn more about why Sprouts stores are so appealing and fun to visit. My method was to determine a representative sample of stores in the “Valley” to visit. At each location, I requested to speak with a manager and asked him or her four questions about that particular store. I also spent approximately forty minutes examining each location and observing details about each store according to a precomposed list of things to particularly notice but with room to add details regarding each store’s unique elements and commonalities with the other locations. The results of this study were rewarding, as at nineteen of the twenty stores I was able to speak with a manager who graciously answered my questions. I collected much data from these interviews and from my own observations. The most significant conclusion I reached was that Sprouts Farmers Market promotes health, natural-eating, freshness, and friendliness in every area. From pleasant employees to natural lighting to unique brands, Sprouts endeavors to carry products that meet the special dietary needs of each customer no matter how general or specific they may be. Another key discovery I made is that the entire company and each individual store revolves around the produce department. Because this is the core of the business, extra measures are taken to promote it, such as frequent produce deliveries to ensure fresh products are on the shelf, extra lighting in that part of the store, and frequent stocking and sweeping to keep the area full and clean. Additionally, the produce department has ample signage denoting organic and local products and information signs about how to consume various produce items, including information to learn about the farmers who grew the goods. Beyond these key elements of Sprouts Farmers Market, an intangible element exists which sets Sprouts apart from its competitors, and that is the personal touch. Sprouts’ employees are friendly, welcoming, and helpful. They are encouraged to ask customers if they need assistance and to inquire how their day is going. The employees are also educated on the products they sell as well as various dietary trends so that they can help shoppers find products that fit their needs. This warmth, helpfulness, and friendliness trickles down from the top management at each store and is communicated to the customers through their interactions with the employees. This personal touch is so important to Sprouts Farmers Market that the company even has a program to encourage employee helpfulness. It is called the “Yes” Program, and essentially empowers employees and managers to authorize price adjustments, exchanges, returns, and the like to assist and serve shoppers with exceptional customer service and provide whatever is necessary to make the customers happy and desirous to become repeat shoppers at Sprouts Farmers Market.
