Education of any skill based subject, such as mathematics or language, involves a significant amount of repetition and pratice. According to the National Survey of Student Engagements, students spend on average 17 hours per week reviewing and practicing material previously learned in a classroom, with higher performing students showing a tendency to spend more time practicing. As such, learning software has emerged in the past several decades focusing on providing a wide range of examples, practice problems, and situations for users to exercise their skills. Notably, math students have benefited from software that procedurally generates a virtually infinite number of practice problems and their corresponding solutions. This allows for instantaneous feedback and automatic generation of tests and quizzes. Of course, this is only possible because software is capable of generating and verifying a virtually endless supply of sample problems across a wide range of topics within mathematics. While English learning software has progressed in a similar manner, it faces a series of hurdles distinctly different from those of mathematics. In particular, there is a wide range of exception cases present in English grammar. Some words have unique spellings for their plural forms, some words have identical spelling for plural forms, and some words are conjugated differently for only one particular tense or person-of-speech. These issues combined make the problem of generating grammatically correct sentences complicated. To compound to this problem, the grammar rules in English are vast, and often depend on the context in which they are used. Verb-tense agreement (e.g. "I eat" vs "he eats"), and conjugation of irregular verbs (e.g. swim -> swam) are common examples. This thesis presents an algorithm designed to randomly generate a virtually infinite number of practice problems for students of English as a second language. This approach differs from other generation approaches by generating based on a context set by educators, so that problems can be generated in the context of what students are currently learning. The algorithm is validated through a study in which over 35 000 sentences generated by the algorithm are verified by multiple grammar checking algorithms, and a subset of the sentences are validated against 3 education standards by a subject matter expert in the field. The study found that this approach has a significantly reduced grammar error ratio compared to other generation algorithms, and shows potential where context specification is concerned.

Currently, students at Arizona State University are restricted to cards when using their college's local currency. This currency, Maroon and Gold dollars (M&G), is a primary source of meal plans for many students. When relying on card readers, students risk security and convenience. The security is risked due to the constant student id number on each card. A student's identification number never changes and is located on each card. If the student loses their card, their account information is permanently compromised. Convenience is an issue because, currently, students must make a purchase in order to see their current account balance. Another major issue is that businesses must purchase external hardware in order to use the M&G System. An online or mobile system would eliminate the need for a physical card and allow businesses to function without external card readers. Such a system would have access to financial information of businesses and students at ASU. Thus, the system require severe scrutiny by a well-trusted team of professionals before being implemented. My objective was to help bring such a system to life. To do this, I decided to make a mobile application prototype to serve as a baseline and to demonstrate the features of such a system. As a baseline, it needed to have a realistic, professional appearance, with the ability to accurately demonstrate feature functionality. Before developing the app, I set out to determine the User Interactions and User Experience designs (UI/UX) by conducting a series of informal interviews with local students and businesses. After the designs were finalized, I started implementation of the actual application in Android Studio. This creative project consists of a mobile application, a contained database, a GUI (Graphics User Interface) prototype, and a technical document.

ASU’s Software Engineering (SER) program adequately prepares students for what happens after they become a developer, but there is no standard for preparing students to secure a job post-graduation in the first place. This project creates and executes a supplemental curriculum to prepare students for the technical interview process. The trial run of the curriculum was received positively by study participants, who experienced an increase in confidence over the duration of the workshop.

With the recent focus of attention towards remote work and mobile computing, the possibility of taking a powerful workstation wherever needed is enticing. However, even emerging laptops today struggle to compete with desktops in terms of cost, maintenance, and future upgrades. The price point of a powerful laptop is considerably higher compared to an equally powerful desktop computer, and most laptops are manufactured in a way that makes upgrading parts of the machine difficult or impossible, forcing a complete purchase in the event of failure or a component needing an upgrade. In the case where someone already owns a desktop computer and must be mobile, instead of needing to purchase a second device at full price, it may be possible to develop a low-cost computer that has just enough power to connect to the existing desktop and run all processing there, using the mobile device only as a user interface. This thesis will explore the development of a custom PCB that utilizes a Raspberry Pi Computer Module 4, as well as the development of a fork of the Open Source project Moonlight to stream a host machine's screen to a remote client. This implementation will be compared against other existing remote desktop solutions to analyze it's performance and quality.
