All freshman honors students are required to take a two-semester course during their freshman year at ASU called Human Event. This course focuses on developing a student’s ability to break down the concepts in important historical texts and then write essay’s that explore these concepts. One of the unique qualities of the honors college at ASU Polytechnic is the Thesis Fest, which is an opportunity for students to share their progress when writing each essay before the due date. During Thesis Fest, students discuss the texts they are writing about with tutors and they get helpful pointers regarding how to clearly understand the concepts they want to explore. These tutors are previous Human Event students who are all enrolled in another course called the Honors Colloquium. The polytechnic campus is also unique because it allows a student’s paper to be evaluated in a conference – Paper Mini-Conference (PMC) – between the student, a tutor, and the professor. The inspiration for this project is derived from personal experiences in the Honors Colloquium. During each Thesis Fest, students and tutors are required to fill out tutor receipts, verifying that the student attended Thesis Fest as well as the texts discussed. In addition, a receipt is also used to verify that the tutor is fulfilling his/her tutoring obligations. Therein lies a pain point for both tutors and students, which is the fact that all receipts are hand-written on small pieces of paper and both the tutor and student must have separate duplicate copies. In addition, the head tutor of the Colloquium is then required to analyze the cards and verify that individual tutors have enough receipts for the semester. Lastly, the student must verify that they attended Thesis Fest by bringing a receipt to the PMC. There have been many occasions when a student has forgotten their receipt, which results in them having to email the receipt to the professor or bring it in at a later time. This project aims to solve this problem by building a mobile application that digitizes the data collection for receipts.

The market for searching for food online is exploding. According to one expert at Google, “there are over 1 billion restaurant searches on Google every month” (Kelso, 2020). To capture this market and ride the general digital trend of internet personalization (as evidenced by Google search results, ads, YouTube and social media algorithms, etc), we created Munch to be an algorithm meant to help people find food they’ll love. <br/>Munch offers the ability to search for food by restaurant or even as specific as a menu item (ex: search for the best Pad Thai). The best part? It is customized to your preferences based on a quiz you take when you open the app and from that point continuously learns from your behavior.<br/>This thesis documents the journey of the team who founded Munch, what progress we made and the reasoning behind our decisions, where this idea fits in a competitive marketplace, how much it could be worth, branding, and our recommendations for a successful app in the future.

In order to best approach the paradoxical concepts of exonerations and wrongful convictions in the determinate system of US courts, both court agents (i.e. attorneys and judges) and citizens that interact with it must increase their understanding of the various perspectives found in the process. Through the use of an app for mobile devices, information from the perspective of these court agents can be easily accessible for anyone, serving as a valuable learning tool for not only individuals that strive to work in the justice system, but citizens that will possibly interact with it in the future as well.

Student academic performance has far-reaching implications, such as lifetime earnings potential, that are beyond the immediate impact it may have on any individual student (Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS], 2019). Colleges and universities also have a shared interest in the retention of their students as a poor reputation can depress enrollment and tarnish their brand. Public institutions have an especially large incentive for student success as many state and federal funding opportunities consider student retention and performance when allocating taxpayer dollars (Li, 2018). To assist in the mutual desire for students to succeed, the Calm Connection start-up venture formed with the goal of seamlessly integrating biofeedback therapy with a student’s unique education needs. Forming the foundation of the resulting Calm Connection app is software patented by NASA which allows for the collection and manipulation of biofeedback monitoring data on mobile devices with distinguishing features such as geolocation. For students, one of the largest barriers to effective learning is issues of focus and information retention, whether due to problems at home, conditions such as ADHD, or the high prevalence of test anxiety among students (Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health et al., 2012). The repeated use of biofeedback therapy trains students to overcome these focus issues and works in conjunction with our app’s study aid and scheduling ability (Henriques et al., 2011). Among those surveyed and participants in follow-up focus groups, the Calm Connection app and its use of biofeedback monitoring has generated much interest and documented traction.

Psyche and Design: A Visual Journey to a Metal World

Psyche is both the name of an asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter — and the name of a NASA space mission to visit that asteroid, led by

Psyche is both the name of an asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter — and the name of a NASA space mission to visit that asteroid, led by Arizona State University. The mission was chosen by NASA on January 4, 2017 as one of two missions for the agency’s Discovery Program, a series of relatively low-cost missions to solar system targets. The Psyche spacecraft is targeted to launch in summer 2022 and travel to the asteroid using solar-electric (low-thrust) propulsion, arriving in 2026, following a Mars flyby and gravity-assist in 2023. After arrival, the mission plan calls for 21 months spent at the asteroid, mapping it and studying its properties. Once the spacecraft arrives at the asteroid in 2026, plans call for it to spend 21 months at the asteroid, performing science operations from four staging orbits, which become successively closer.

As a graphic design student, I have been tasked in developing an app for Psyche in efforts to inform the public, raise awareness, and keep eyes on the mission. I teamed up with ASU computer science majors to create a fully functioning app based on Psyche to provide a fun and interactive way to learn about the mission. To expand the range of ASU student competitions, we created five additional Psyche programs for various STEM majors to take part in. Each new competition will have their own branding, advertising, and social postings. A website has also been made to make it easy for students to get involved, keep track of dates, and sign up for the various competitions. To spread awareness of the new ASU Psyche competitions, a poster series was created with different designs for each major in efforts to advertise the various events. Other designs, such as T-shirts, stickers, and social media postings were implemented to keep awareness up and attract new competitors.

Charleston, South Carolina currently faces serious annual flooding issues due to tides and rainfall. These issues are expected to get significantly worse within the next few decades reaching a projected 180 days a year of flooding by 2045 (Carter et al., 2018). Several permanent solutions are in progress by the City of Charleston. However, these solutions are years away at minimum and faced with development issues. This thesis attempts to treat some of the symptoms of flooding, such as navigation, by creating an iPhone application which predicts flooding and helps people navigate around it safely. Specifically, this thesis will take into account rainfall and tide levels to display to users actively flooded areas of downtown Charleston and provide routing to a destination from a user’s location around these flooded areas whenever possible.

Media and technology are integral parts of today’s society. Unlike in the past, most adults in the United States now have access to the internet via their own personal devices.

Media and technology are integral parts of today’s society. Unlike in the past, most adults in the United States now have access to the internet via their own personal devices. Technology’s popularity does not stop with adults. The children of this generation are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to media and technology and are exposed to it at a very young age. This paper analyzes the effect that this exposure is having on early childhood development. The research shows that there are several benefits to children using technology at a young age. Some of these benefits include increased learning opportunities, preparation for future careers, and support for children with disabilities. However, there are also several challenges that technology can cause. Some of these challenges include increased violence, exposure to inappropriate content, sleep issues, and an increased chance of obesity. In addition to this paper, a resource website titled Toddlers and Technology was created. The purpose of this website is to give parents insight into the information that is available in regards to technology and child development. The website includes the benefits and challenges of children using technology, recommendations on how parents can combat the challenges, and a list of 10 educational apps for early childhood development.
