Internet sites that support user-generated content, so-called Web 2.0, have become part of the fabric of everyday life in technologically advanced nations. Users collectively spend billions of hours consuming and creating content on social networking sites, weblogs (blogs), and various other types of sites in the United States and around the world. Given the fundamentally emotional nature of humans and the amount of emotional content that appears in Web 2.0 content, it is important to understand how such websites can affect the emotions of users. This work attempts to determine whether emotion spreads through an online social network (OSN). To this end, a method is devised that employs a model based on a general threshold diffusion model as a classifier to predict the propagation of emotion between users and their friends in an OSN by way of mood-labeled blog entries. The model generalizes existing information diffusion models in that the state machine representation of a node is generalized from being binary to having n-states in order to support n class labels necessary to model emotional contagion. In the absence of ground truth, the prediction accuracy of the model is benchmarked with a baseline method that predicts the majority label of a user's emotion label distribution. The model significantly outperforms the baseline method in terms of prediction accuracy. The experimental results make a strong case for the existence of emotional contagion in OSNs in spite of possible alternative arguments such confounding influence and homophily, since these alternatives are likely to have negligible effect in a large dataset or simply do not apply to the domain of human emotions. A hybrid manual/automated method to map mood-labeled blog entries to a set of emotion labels is also presented, which enables the application of the model to a large set (approximately 900K) of blog entries from LiveJournal.

Cyberbullying is a phenomenon which negatively affects individuals. Victims of the cyberbullying suffer from a range of mental issues, ranging from depression to low self-esteem. Due to the advent of the social media platforms, cyberbullying is becoming more and more prevalent. Traditional mechanisms to fight against cyberbullying include use of standards and guidelines, human moderators, use of blacklists based on profane words, and regular expressions to manually detect cyberbullying. However, these mechanisms fall short in social media and do not scale well. Users in social media use intentional evasive expressions like, obfuscation of abusive words, which necessitates the development of a sophisticated learning framework to automatically detect new cyberbullying behaviors. Cyberbullying detection in social media is a challenging task due to short, noisy and unstructured content and intentional obfuscation of the abusive words or phrases by social media users. Motivated by sociological and psychological findings on bullying behavior and its correlation with emotions, we propose to leverage the sentiment information to accurately detect cyberbullying behavior in social media by proposing an effective optimization framework. Experimental results on two real-world social media datasets show the superiority of the proposed framework. Further studies validate the effectiveness of leveraging sentiment information for cyberbullying detection.

Social media has become a primary means of communication and a prominent source of information about day-to-day happenings in the contemporary world. The rise in the popularity of social media platforms in recent decades has empowered people with an unprecedented level of connectivity. Despite the benefits social media offers, it also comes with disadvantages. A significant downside to staying connected via social media is the susceptibility to falsified information or Fake News. Easy accessibility to social media and lack of truth verification tools favored the miscreants on online platforms to spread false propaganda at scale, ensuing chaos. The spread of misinformation on these platforms ultimately leads to mistrust and social unrest. Consequently, there is a need to counter the spread of misinformation which could otherwise have a detrimental impact on society. A notable example of such a case is the 2019 Covid pandemic misinformation spread, where coordinated misinformation campaigns misled the public on vaccination and health safety. The advancements in Natural Language Processing gave rise to sophisticated language generation models that can generate realistic-looking texts. Although the current Fake News generation process is manual, it is just a matter of time before this process gets automated at scale and generates Neural Fake News using language generation models like the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and the third generation Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT-3). Moreover, given that the current state of fact verification is manual, it calls for an urgent need to develop reliable automated detection tools to counter Neural Fake News generated at scale. Existing tools demonstrate state-of-the-art performance in detecting Neural Fake News but exhibit a black box behavior. Incorporating explainability into the Neural Fake News classification task will build trust and acceptance amongst different communities and decision-makers. Therefore, the current study proposes a new set of interpretable discriminatory features. These features capture statistical and stylistic idiosyncrasies, achieving an accuracy of 82% on Neural Fake News classification. Furthermore, this research investigates essential dependency relations contributing to the classification process. Lastly, the study concludes by providing directions for future research in building explainable tools for Neural Fake News detection.
