Less than half of all premedical applicants get accepted into a medical school, 39.3% of applicants to be precise, and that statistic is based on the number of matriculants out of the total applicants in 2015. With such a discouraging acceptance rate, many students who start out as premed are often not towards the end of their undergraduate career and post-graduation because they do not feel prepared for medical school. It’s difficult for premed students to find all the information they need in one place rather than going from place to place or school website to school website. Additionally, it can be a hassle for premeds to keep track of all their coursework and calculate separate GPAs for each category especially due to how annoying Excel spread sheets can be. This is where the conceptualization of Premed Portfolio comes in. Premed Portfolio is a prototype mobile application. Premed Portfolio aims to streamline the process of preparing for medical school by guiding students to create a portfolio aimed to address the most important aspects of a medical school application. Students will be able to keep track of their cumulative GPA, BCPM (also known as science/math) GPA, MCAT Scores, prerequisite coursework and many more targeted areas of medical school. Premed Portfolio will also hope to use the stats that students provide and educate them on their chances of getting into medical school.

However, the ever-increasing presence of smartphones and the increasing need for on-demand services like Uber and Uber Eats creates a unique opportunity for stylists \u2014 Clippr. Clippr is an application that aims to connect individual stylists directly to their customers. The application gives stylists a platform to create and display their own prices, services, and portfolio. Customers get the benefit of finding a stylist that suits them and booking instantly. This project outlines the backend for the Clippr application. It goes over the framework, REST API, and various functionalities of the application. Additionally, the project also covers the work that is still needed to successfully launch the application.

The main objective of this thesis is to describe and analyze Clippr, an ASU startup founded by four students: Adam Lynch, Eric Gottfried, Ty Sivley, and Thomas Carpaneto. This paper will describe the formation of Clippr as a business, analyze the work and reasoning for dissolving the business, and suggest three pivots that could increase the chances of success for the future of Clippr. These three pivots are: mini salons, a concierge service, and an online resource. The idea for Clippr came from Sam, the team's friend's experience within the cosmetology industry. Sam graduated from cosmetology school in Phoenix and started his career as an assistant, which is the most common entry level position within the industry. Assistants do not get to work with clients and primarily do chores around the salon so he was not gaining any valuable experience. Eventually Sam found a position at a salon in Flagstaff. Unfortunately, he was not scheduled enough hours to pay his rent which forced him to travel back to Phoenix to cut his friend's and family's hair to make ends meet. Sam is not alone experiencing these issues within the industry, they are a common trend throughout the cosmetology field. It was found that there is a clear problem that affects every stylist: they struggle to reap the benefits of their self-employment. Most stylists become independent contractors where they are constrained by the salon's management. They are generally forced to work during the salon's hours of operations, promote specific products, adhere to a dress code, and forfeit their clients information. On the other hand, freelance workers outside of salons do enjoy greater freedoms within their work but with significant hurdles to overcome. They have a much harder time building a client base and face prohibitive start-up costs that make it harder to break into the industry.

In order to adequately introduce students to computer science and robotics in an exciting and engaging manner certain teaching techniques should be used. In recent years some of the most popular paradigms are Visual Programming Languages. Visual Programming Languages are meant to introduce problem solving skills and basic programming constructs inherent to all modern day languages by allowing users to write programs visually as opposed to textually. By bypassing the need to learn syntax students can focus on the thinking behind developing an algorithm and see immediate results that help generate excitement for the field and reduce disinterest due to startup complexity and burnout. The Introduction to Engineering course at Arizona State University supports this approach by teaching students the basics of autonomous maze traversing algorithms and using ASU VIPLE, a Visual Programming Language developed to connect with and direct real-world robots. However, some startup time is needed to learn how to interface with these robots using ASU VIPLE. That is why the HTML5 Autonomous Robot Web Simulator was created -- by encouraging students to use the simulator the problem solving behind autonomous maze traversing algorithms can be introduced more quickly and with immediate affirmation. Our goal was to improve this simulator and add features so that the simulator could be accessed and used for a more wide variety of introductory Computer Science lessons. Features scattered across past implementations of robotic simulators were aggregated in a cross platform solution. Upon initial development, a classroom test group revealed usability concerns and a demonstration of students' mental models. Mean time for task completion was 8.1min - compared to 2min for the authors. The simulator was updated in response to test group feedback and new instructor requirements. The new implementation reduces programming overhead while maintaining a learning environment with support for even the most complex applications.

The purpose of this experiment was to research using Virtual Reality (VR) as a way for a home builder to experience their unbuilt home, similarly to home shoppers experiencing built homes through open houses and tours. It discusses the ideas and technologies involved, the process for developing a home in VR, and the observations found from demoing it to people. The research was started based on the "presence" effect in VR. Presence describes the feeling when the user is convinced that they are truly in the virtual world. The research conducted found that the main immersion creator and breaker is the interactivity capable in the virtual home. Through demoing a virtual home, it was discovered that the user was less sensitive to the visual quality of the house, and more sensitive to any inconsistent interactions with the house. If the user could physically open a door, but then not a drawer, they were shaken out of their presence. The research conducted also found that VR can provide enough immersion to make the home owner feel "present" in their new home if the application is built with a focus on consistent interactions throughout the environment. This application is capable of severely disrupting the current market climate and reshaping the way home builders decide what house they want to build.

There is a serious need for high quality early childhood programming in the state of Arizona. More than half of children under the age of six are living below the poverty line, and Arizona is ranked 47th out of 50 states and the District of Columbia in education (Tirozzi, 2014). The Scottsdale Public Library (SPL) system is fighting to combat this issue by providing free, interactive parent-child classes that are aligned with the Arizona Early Learning Standards in order to support school readiness; additionally, these programs are also aligned with the Arizona School Readiness Framework. This thesis project focuses on the Fun with Math & Science (FMS) program, one of three Knowing and Growing programs, implemented across six Scottsdale Public Library locations. This program is an extremely interactive, parent-child class that aims to improve children's basic science and math skills. The purpose of this study is to understand the population of families attending FMS at SPL, as well as parent perceptions of the programming and its impact on their family. This study also focuses on a subset of families who participated in this research at two of the give Scottsdale Public Libraries. Interviews with parents were conducted and provide insightful information about parent and child experiences participating in the program at the library.

Programming is quickly becoming as ubiquitous a tool as general mathematics. The technology field is progressing at an exponential rate and driving this constantly evolving field forward requires competent software developers. Elementary and high school educational facilities do not currently express the importance of the computer science field. Computer science is not a required course in high school and nearly impossible to find at a middle school level. This lack of exposure to the field at a young age handicaps aspiring developers by not providing them with a foundation to build on when seeking a degree. This paper revolves around the development of a virtual world that encompasses principles of programming in a video game structure. The use of a virtual world-based game was chosen under the hypothesis that embedding programming instruction into a game through problem-based learning is more likely to engage young students than more traditional forms of instruction. Unlike the traditional method of instruction, a virtual world allows us to "deceive" the player into learning concepts by implicitly educating them through fun gameplay mechanics. In order to make our video game robust and self-sufficient, we have developed a predictive recursive descent parser that will validate any user-generated solutions to pre-defined logical platforming puzzles. Programming topics taught with these problems range from binary numbers to while and for loops.

Data is ever present in the world today. Data can help predict presidential elections, Super Bowl champions, and even the weather. However, it's very hard, if not impossible, to predict how people feel unless they tell us. This is when impulse spending with data comes in handy. Companies are constantly looking for ways to get honest feedback when they are doing market research. Often, the research obtained ends up being unreliable or biased in some way. Allowing users to make impulse purchases with survey data is the answer. Companies can still gather the data that they need to do market research and customers can get more features or lives for their favorite games. It becomes a win-win for both users and companies. By adding the option to pay with information instead of money, companies can still get value out of frugal players. Established companies might not care so much about the impulse spending for purchases made in the application, however they would find a great deal of value in hearing about what customers think of their product or upcoming event. The real value from getting data from customers is the ability to train analytics models so that companies can make better predictions about consumer behavior. More accurate predictions can lead to companies being better prepared to meet the needs to the customer. Impulse spending with data provides the foundation to creating a software that can create value from all types of users regardless of whether the user is willing to spend money in the application.

Last Hymn was created by the team of Tyler Pinho, Jefferson Le, and Curtis Spence with the desire to create an eccentric Role Playing Game focused on the exploration of a strange, dying world. Battles in the game are based off of rhythm games like Dance Dance Revolution using a procedural generation algorithm that makes every encounter unique. This is then complemented with the path system where each enemy has unique rhythm patterns to give them different types of combat opportunities. In Last Hymn, the player arrives on a train at the World's End Train Station where they are greeted by a mysterious figure and guided to the Forest where they witness the end of the world and find themselves back at the train station before they left for the Forest. With only a limited amount of time per cycle of the world, the player must constantly weigh the opportunity cost of each decision, and only with careful thought, conviction, and tenacity will the player find a conclusion from the never ending cycle of rebirth. Blending both Shinto architecture and modern elements, Last Hymn used a "fantasy-chic" aesthetic in order to provide memorable locations and dissonant imagery. As the player explores they will struggle against puzzles and dynamic, rhythm based combat while trying to unravel the mystery of the world's looping time. Last Hymn was designed to develop innovative and dynamic new solutions for combat, exploration, and mapping. From this project all three team members were able to grow their software development and game design skills, achieving goals like improved level design, improved asset pipelines while simultaneously aiming to craft an experience that will be unforgettable for players everywhere.

For those interested in the field of robotics, there are not many options to get your hands on a physical robot without paying a steep price. This is why the folks at BCN3D Technologies decided to design a fully open-source 3D-printable robotic arm. Their goal was to reduce the barrier to entry for the field of robotics and make it exponentially more accessible for people around the world. For our honors thesis, we chose to take the design from BCN3D and attempt to build their robot, to see how accessible the design truly is. Although their designs were not perfect and we were forced to make some adjustments to the 3D files, overall the work put forth by the people at BCN3D was extremely useful in successfully building a robotic arm that is programmed with ease.
