This thesis is an initial test of the hypothesis that superficial measures suffice for measuring collaboration among pairs of students solving complex math problems, where the degree of collaboration is categorized at a high level. Data were collected

in the form of logs from students' tablets and the vocal interaction between pairs of students. Thousands of different features were defined, and then extracted computationally from the audio and log data. Human coders used richer data (several video streams) and a thorough understand of the tasks to code episodes as

collaborative, cooperative or asymmetric contribution. Machine learning was used to induce a detector, based on random forests, that outputs one of these three codes for an episode given only a characterization of the episode in terms of superficial features. An overall accuracy of 92.00% (kappa = 0.82) was obtained when

comparing the detector's codes to the humans' codes. However, due irregularities in running the study (e.g., the tablet software kept crashing), these results should be viewed as preliminary.

Research in the learning sciences suggests that students learn better by collaborating with their peers than learning individually. Students working together as a group tend to generate new ideas more frequently and exhibit a higher level of reasoning. In this internet age with the advent of massive open online courses (MOOCs), students across the world are able to access and learn material remotely. This creates a need for tools that support distant or remote collaboration. In order to build such tools we need to understand the basic elements of remote collaboration and how it differs from traditional face-to-face collaboration.

The main goal of this thesis is to explore how spoken dialogue varies in face-to-face and remote collaborative learning settings. Speech data is collected from student participants solving mathematical problems collaboratively on a tablet. Spoken dialogue is analyzed based on conversational and acoustic features in both the settings. Looking for collaborative differences of transactivity and dialogue initiative, both settings are compared in detail using machine learning classification techniques based on acoustic and prosodic features of speech. Transactivity is defined as a joint construction of knowledge by peers. The main contributions of this thesis are: a speech corpus to analyze spoken dialogue in face-to-face and remote settings and an empirical analysis of conversation, collaboration, and speech prosody in both the settings. The results from the experiments show that amount of overlap is lower in remote dialogue than in the face-to-face setting. There is a significant difference in transactivity among strangers. My research benefits the computer-supported collaborative learning community by providing an analysis that can be used to build more efficient tools for supporting remote collaborative learning.

Handwritten documents have gained popularity in various domains including education and business. A key task in analyzing a complex document is to distinguish between various content types such as text, math, graphics, tables and so on. For example, one such aspect could be a region on the document with a mathematical expression; in this case, the label would be math. This differentiation facilitates the performance of specific recognition tasks depending on the content type. We hypothesize that the recognition accuracy of the subsequent tasks such as textual, math, and shape recognition will increase, further leading to a better analysis of the document.

Content detection on handwritten documents assigns a particular class to a homogeneous portion of the document. To complete this task, a set of handwritten solutions was digitally collected from middle school students located in two different geographical regions in 2017 and 2018. This research discusses the methods to collect, pre-process and detect content type in the collected handwritten documents. A total of 4049 documents were extracted in the form of image, and json format; and were labelled using an object labelling software with tags being text, math, diagram, cross out, table, graph, tick mark, arrow, and doodle. The labelled images were fed to the Tensorflow’s object detection API to learn a neural network model. We show our results from two neural networks models, Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN) and Single Shot detection model (SSD).

Paper assessment remains to be an essential formal assessment method in today's classes. However, it is difficult to track student learning behavior on physical papers. This thesis presents a new educational technology—Web Programming Grading Assistant (WPGA). WPGA not only serves as a grading system but also a feedback delivery tool that connects paper-based assessments to digital space. I designed a classroom study and collected data from ASU computer science classes. I tracked and modeled students' reviewing and reflecting behaviors based on the use of WPGA. I analyzed students' reviewing efforts, in terms of frequency, timing, and the associations with their academic performances. Results showed that students put extra emphasis in reviewing prior to the exams and the efforts demonstrated the desire to review formal assessments regardless of if they were graded for academic performance or for attendance. In addition, all students paid more attention on reviewing quizzes and exams toward the end of semester.

The pandemic that hit in 2020 has boosted the growth of online learning that involves the booming of Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). To support this situation, it will be helpful to have tools that can help students in choosing between the different courses and can help instructors to understand what the students need. One of those tools is an online course ratings predictor. Using the predictor, online course instructors can learn the qualities that majority course takers deem as important, and thus they can adjust their lesson plans to fit those qualities. Meanwhile, students will be able to use it to help them in choosing the course to take by comparing the ratings. This research aims to find the best way to predict the rating of online courses using machine learning (ML). To create the ML model, different combinations of the length of the course, the number of materials it contains, the price of the course, the number of students taking the course, the course’s difficulty level, the usage of jargons or technical terms in the course description, the course’s instructors’ rating, the number of reviews the instructors got, and the number of classes the instructors have created on the same platform are used as the inputs. Meanwhile, the output of the model would be the average rating of a course. Data from 350 courses are used for this model, where 280 of them are used for training, 35 for testing, and the last 35 for validation. After trying out different machine learning models, wide neural networks model constantly gives the best training results while the medium tree model gives the best testing results. However, further research needs to be conducted as none of the results are not accurate, with 0.51 R-squared test result for the tree model.

Concept maps are commonly used knowledge visualization tools and have been shown to have a positive impact on learning. The main drawbacks of concept mapping are the requirement of training, and lack of feedback support. Thus, prior research has attempted to provide support and feedback in concept mapping, such as by developing computer-based concept mapping tools, offering starting templates and navigational supports, as well as providing automated feedback. Although these approaches have achieved promising results, there are still challenges that remain to be solved. For example, there is a need to create a concept mapping system that reduces the extraneous effort of editing a concept map while encouraging more cognitively beneficial behaviors. Also, there is little understanding of the cognitive process during concept mapping. What’s more, current feedback mechanisms in concept mapping only focus on the outcome of the map, instead of the learning process.

This thesis work strives to solve the fundamental research question: How to leverage computer technologies to intelligently support concept mapping to promote meaningful learning? To approach this research question, I first present an intelligent concept mapping system, MindDot, that supports concept mapping via innovative integration of two features, hyperlink navigation, and expert template. The system reduces the effort of creating and modifying concept maps while encouraging beneficial activities such as comparing related concepts and establishing relationships among them. I then present the comparative strategy metric that modes student learning by evaluating behavioral patterns and learning strategies. Lastly, I develop an adaptive feedback system that provides immediate diagnostic feedback in response to both the key learning behaviors during concept mapping and the correctness and completeness of the created maps.

Empirical evaluations indicated that the integrated navigational and template support in MindDot fostered effective learning behaviors and facilitating learning achievements. The comparative strategy model was shown to be highly representative of learning characteristics such as motivation, engagement, misconceptions, and predicted learning results. The feedback tutor also demonstrated positive impacts on supporting learning and assisting the development of effective learning strategies that prepare learners for future learning. This dissertation contributes to the field of supporting concept mapping with designs of technological affordances, a process-based student model, an adaptive feedback tutor, empirical evaluations of these proposed innovations, and implications for future support in concept mapping.

Students seldom spontaneously collaborate with each other. A system that can measure collaboration in real time could be useful, for example, by helping the teacher locate a group requiring guidance. To address this challenge, the research presented here focuses on building and comparing collaboration detectors for different types of classroom problem solving activities, such as card sorting and handwriting.

Transfer learning using different representations was also studied with a goal of building collaboration detectors for one task can be used with a new task. Data for building such detectors were collected in the form of verbal interaction and user action logs from students’ tablets. Three qualitative levels of interactivity were distinguished: Collaboration, Cooperation and Asymmetric Contribution. Machine learning was used to induce a classifier that can assign a code for every episode based on the set of features. The results indicate that machine learned classifiers were reliable and can transfer.

Machine learning is a rapidly growing field, with no doubt in part due to its countless applications to other fields, including pedagogy and the creation of computer-aided tutoring systems. To extend the functionality of FACT, an automated teaching assistant, we want to predict, using metadata produced by student activity, whether a student is capable of fixing their own mistakes. Logs were collected from previous FACT trials with middle school math teachers and students. The data was converted to time series sequences for deep learning, and ordinary features were extracted for statistical machine learning. Ultimately, deep learning models attained an accuracy of 60%, while tree-based methods attained an accuracy of 65%, showing that some correlation, although small, exists between how a student fixes their mistakes and whether their correction is correct.
