Research on developing new algorithms to improve information on brain functionality and structure is ongoing. Studying neural activity through dipole source localization with electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) sensor measurements can lead to diagnosis and treatment of a brain disorder and can also identify the area of the brain from where the disorder has originated. Designing advanced localization algorithms that can adapt to environmental changes is considered a significant shift from manual diagnosis which is based on the knowledge and observation of the doctor, to an adaptive and improved brain disorder diagnosis as these algorithms can track activities that might not be noticed by the human eye. An important consideration of these localization algorithms, however, is to try and minimize the overall power consumption in order to improve the study and treatment of brain disorders. This thesis considers the problem of estimating dynamic parameters of neural dipole sources while minimizing the system's overall power consumption; this is achieved by minimizing the number of EEG/MEG measurements sensors without a loss in estimation performance accuracy. As the EEG/MEG measurements models are related non-linearity to the dipole source locations and moments, these dynamic parameters can be estimated using sequential Monte Carlo methods such as particle filtering. Due to the large number of sensors required to record EEG/MEG Measurements for use in the particle filter, over long period recordings, a large amounts of power is required for storage and transmission. In order to reduce the overall power consumption, two methods are proposed. The first method used the predicted mean square estimation error as the performance metric under the constraint of a maximum power consumption. The performance metric of the second method uses the distance between the location of the sensors and the location estimate of the dipole source at the previous time step; this sensor scheduling scheme results in maximizing the overall signal-to-noise ratio. The performance of both methods is demonstrated using simulated data, and both methods show that they can provide good estimation results with significant reduction in the number of activated sensors at each time step.

Class D Amplifiers are widely used in portable systems such as mobile phones to achieve high efficiency. The demands of portable electronics for low power consumption to extend battery life and reduce heat dissipation mandate efficient, high-performance audio amplifiers. The high efficiency of Class D amplifiers (CDAs) makes them particularly attractive for portable applications. The Digital class D amplifier is an interesting solution to increase the efficiency of embedded systems. However, this solution is not good enough in terms of PWM stage linearity and power supply rejection. An efficient control is needed to correct the error sources in order to get a high fidelity sound quality in the whole audio range of frequencies. A fundamental analysis on various error sources due to non idealities in the power stage have been discussed here with key focus on Power supply perturbations driving the Power stage of a Class D Audio Amplifier. Two types of closed loop Digital Class D architecture for PSRR improvement have been proposed and modeled. Double sided uniform sampling modulation has been used. One of the architecture uses feedback around the power stage and the second architecture uses feedback into digital domain. Simulation & experimental results confirm that the closed loop PSRR & PS-IMD improve by around 30-40 dB and 25 dB respectively.

Continuous underwater observation is a challenging engineering task that could be accomplished by development and deployment of a sensor array that can survive harsh underwater conditions. One approach to this challenge is a swarm of micro underwater robots, known as Sensorbots, that are equipped with biogeochemical sensors that can relay information among themselves in real-time. This innovative method for underwater exploration can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the ocean by not limiting sampling to a single point and time. In this thesis, Sensorbot Beta, a low-cost fully enclosed Sensorbot prototype for bench-top characterization and short-term field testing, is presented in a modular format that provides flexibility and the potential for rapid design. Sensorbot Beta is designed around a microcontroller driven platform comprised of commercial off-the-shelf components for all hardware to reduce cost and development time. The primary sensor incorporated into Sensorbot Beta is an in situ fluorescent pH sensor. Design considerations have been made for easy adoption of other fluorescent or phosphorescent sensors, such as dissolved oxygen or temperature. Optical components are designed in a format that enables additional sensors. A real-time data acquisition system, utilizing Bluetooth, allows for characterization of the sensor in bench top experiments. The Sensorbot Beta demonstrates rapid calibration and future work will include deployment for large scale experiments in a lake or ocean.

Camera calibration has applications in the fields of robotic motion, geographic mapping, semiconductor defect characterization, and many more. This thesis considers camera calibration for the purpose of high accuracy three-dimensional reconstruction when characterizing ball grid arrays within the semiconductor industry. Bouguet's calibration method is used following a set of criteria with the purpose of studying the method's performance according to newly proposed standards. The performance of the camera calibration method is currently measured using standards such as pixel error and computational time. This thesis proposes the use of standard deviation of the intrinsic parameter estimation within a Monte Carlo simulation as a new standard of performance measure. It specifically shows that the standard deviation decreases based on the increased number of images input into the calibration routine. It is also shown that the default thresholds of the non-linear maximum likelihood estimation problem of the calibration method require change in order to improve computational time performance; however, the accuracy lost is negligable even for high accuracy requirements such as ball grid array characterization.

There is a growing interest for improved high-accuracy camera calibration methods due to the increasing demand for 3D visual media in commercial markets. Camera calibration is used widely in the fields of computer vision, robotics and 3D reconstruction. Camera calibration is the first step for extracting 3D data from a 2D image. It plays a crucial role in computer vision and 3D reconstruction due to the fact that the accuracy of the reconstruction and 3D coordinate determination relies on the accuracy of the camera calibration to a great extent. This thesis presents a novel camera calibration method using a circular calibration pattern. The disadvantages and issues with existing state-of-the-art methods are discussed and are overcome in this work. The implemented system consists of techniques of local adaptive segmentation, ellipse fitting, projection and optimization. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed scheme. These results show that the proposed method reduces the error as compared to the state-of-the-art for high-resolution images, and that the proposed scheme is more robust to blur in the imaged calibration pattern.

Today's mobile devices have to support computation-intensive multimedia applications with a limited energy budget. In this dissertation, we present architecture level and algorithm-level techniques that reduce energy consumption of these devices with minimal impact on system quality. First, we present novel techniques to mitigate the effects of SRAM memory failures in JPEG2000 implementations operating in scaled voltages. We investigate error control coding schemes and propose an unequal error protection scheme tailored for JPEG2000 that reduces overhead without affecting the performance. Furthermore, we propose algorithm-specific techniques for error compensation that exploit the fact that in JPEG2000 the discrete wavelet transform outputs have larger values for low frequency subband coefficients and smaller values for high frequency subband coefficients. Next, we present use of voltage overscaling to reduce the data-path power consumption of JPEG codecs. We propose an algorithm-specific technique which exploits the characteristics of the quantized coefficients after zig-zag scan to mitigate errors introduced by aggressive voltage scaling. Third, we investigate the effect of reducing dynamic range for datapath energy reduction. We analyze the effect of truncation error and propose a scheme that estimates the mean value of the truncation error during the pre-computation stage and compensates for this error. Such a scheme is very effective for reducing the noise power in applications that are dominated by additions and multiplications such as FIR filter and transform computation. We also present a novel sum of absolute difference (SAD) scheme that is based on most significant bit truncation. The proposed scheme exploits the fact that most of the absolute difference (AD) calculations result in small values, and most of the large AD values do not contribute to the SAD values of the blocks that are selected. Such a scheme is highly effective in reducing the energy consumption of motion estimation and intra-prediction kernels in video codecs. Finally, we present several hybrid energy-saving techniques based on combination of voltage scaling, computation reduction and dynamic range reduction that further reduce the energy consumption while keeping the performance degradation very low. For instance, a combination of computation reduction and dynamic range reduction for Discrete Cosine Transform shows on average, 33% to 46% reduction in energy consumption while incurring only 0.5dB to 1.5dB loss in PSNR.

Topological methods for data analysis present opportunities for enforcing certain invariances of broad interest in computer vision: including view-point in activity analysis, articulation in shape analysis, and measurement invariance in non-linear dynamical modeling. The increasing success of these methods is attributed to the complementary information that topology provides, as well as availability of tools for computing topological summaries such as persistence diagrams. However, persistence diagrams are multi-sets of points and hence it is not straightforward to fuse them with features used for contemporary machine learning tools like deep-nets. In this paper theoretically well-grounded approaches to develop novel perturbation robust topological representations are presented, with the long-term view of making them amenable to fusion with contemporary learning architectures. The proposed representation lives on a Grassmann manifold and hence can be efficiently used in machine learning pipelines.

The proposed representation.The efficacy of the proposed descriptor was explored on three applications: view-invariant activity analysis, 3D shape analysis, and non-linear dynamical modeling. Favorable results in both high-level recognition performance and improved performance in reduction of time-complexity when compared to other baseline methods are obtained.

Deep learning architectures have been widely explored in computer vision and have

depicted commendable performance in a variety of applications. A fundamental challenge

in training deep networks is the requirement of large amounts of labeled training

data. While gathering large quantities of unlabeled data is cheap and easy, annotating

the data is an expensive process in terms of time, labor and human expertise.

Thus, developing algorithms that minimize the human effort in training deep models

is of immense practical importance. Active learning algorithms automatically identify

salient and exemplar samples from large amounts of unlabeled data and can augment

maximal information to supervised learning models, thereby reducing the human annotation

effort in training machine learning models. The goal of this dissertation is to

fuse ideas from deep learning and active learning and design novel deep active learning

algorithms. The proposed learning methodologies explore diverse label spaces to

solve different computer vision applications. Three major contributions have emerged

from this work; (i) a deep active framework for multi-class image classication, (ii)

a deep active model with and without label correlation for multi-label image classi-

cation and (iii) a deep active paradigm for regression. Extensive empirical studies

on a variety of multi-class, multi-label and regression vision datasets corroborate the

potential of the proposed methods for real-world applications. Additional contributions

include: (i) a multimodal emotion database consisting of recordings of facial

expressions, body gestures, vocal expressions and physiological signals of actors enacting

various emotions, (ii) four multimodal deep belief network models and (iii)

an in-depth analysis of the effect of transfer of multimodal emotion features between

source and target networks on classification accuracy and training time. These related

contributions help comprehend the challenges involved in training deep learning

models and motivate the main goal of this dissertation.

Both two-way relays (TWR) and full-duplex (FD) radios are spectrally efficient, and their integration shows great potential to further improve the spectral efficiency, which offers a solution to the fifth generation wireless systems. High quality channel state information (CSI) are the key components for the implementation and the performance of the FD TWR system, making channel estimation in FD TWRs crucial.

The impact of channel estimation on spectral efficiency in half-duplex multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) TWR systems is investigated. The trade-off between training and data energy is proposed. In the case that two sources are symmetric in power and number of antennas, a closed-form for the optimal ratio of data energy to total energy is derived. It can be shown that the achievable rate is a monotonically increasing function of the data length. The asymmetric case is discussed as well.

Efficient and accurate training schemes for FD TWRs are essential for profiting from the inherent spectrally efficient structures of both FD and TWRs. A novel one-block training scheme with a maximum likelihood (ML) estimator is proposed to estimate the channels between the nodes and the residual self-interference (RSI) channel simultaneously. Baseline training schemes are also considered to compare with the one-block scheme. The Cramer-Rao bounds (CRBs) of the training schemes are derived and analyzed by using the asymptotic properties of Toeplitz matrices. The benefit of estimating the RSI channel is shown analytically in terms of Fisher information.

To obtain fundamental and analytic results of how the RSI affects the spectral efficiency, one-way FD relay systems are studied. Optimal training design and ML channel estimation are proposed to estimate the RSI channel. The CRBs are derived and analyzed in closed-form so that the optimal training sequence can be found via minimizing the CRB. Extensions of the training scheme to frequency-selective channels and multiple relays are also presented.

Simultaneously sensing and transmission in an FD cognitive radio system with MIMO is considered. The trade-off between the transmission rate and the detection accuracy is characterized by the sum-rate of the primary and the secondary users. Different beamforming and combining schemes are proposed and compared.

In underlay CR systems, where secondary users (SUs)

Cognitive radio (CR) and device-to-device (D2D) systems are two promising dynamic spectrum access schemes in wireless communication systems to provide improved quality-of-service, and efficient spectrum utilization. This dissertation shows that both CR and D2D systems benefit from properly designed cooperation scheme.

In underlay CR systems, where secondary users (SUs) transmit simultaneously with primary users (PUs), reliable communication is by all means guaranteed for PUs, which likely deteriorates SUs’ performance. To overcome this issue, cooperation exclusively among SUs is achieved through multi-user diversity (MUD), where each SU is subject to an instantaneous interference constraint at the primary receiver. Therefore, the active number of SUs satisfying this constraint is random. Under different user distributions with the same mean number of SUs, the stochastic ordering of SU performance metrics including bit error rate (BER), outage probability, and ergodic capacity are made possible even without observing closed form expressions. Furthermore, a cooperation is assumed between primary and secondary networks, where those SUs exceeding the interference constraint facilitate PU’s transmission by relaying its signal. A fundamental performance trade-off between primary and secondary networks is observed, and it is illustrated that the proposed scheme outperforms non-cooperative underlay CR systems in the sense of system overall BER and sum achievable rate.

Similar to conventional cellular networks, CR systems suffer from an overloaded receiver having to manage signals from a large number of users. To address this issue, D2D communications has been proposed, where direct transmission links are established between users in close proximity to offload the system traffic. Several new cooperative spectrum access policies are proposed allowing coexistence of multiple D2D pairs in order to improve the spectral efficiency. Despite the additional interference, it is shown that both the cellular user’s (CU) and the individual D2D user's achievable rates can be improved simultaneously when the number of D2D pairs is below a certain threshold, resulting in a significant multiplexing gain in the sense of D2D sum rate. This threshold is quantified for different policies using second order approximations for the average achievable rates for both the CU and the individual D2D user.
