Chris Miller's Souvenirs of Sleep is as serious as it is whimsical, if this is a possibility. The "Museum of the Zoo-real" may be an equally appropriate title as animals are often in performance. In this visual and spiritual investigation, childhood, dream, and the loss of a mother to suicide are the currents. Miller's work is informed by the cinema of Werner Herzog, Andrei Tarkovsky, Robert Bresson and beyond. Miller believes in the power of implication. The poems begin with intense focus, but are often in the business of expansion. Souvenirs of Sleep is a journey toward sense-making, a search for language that might allow it.

This work examines the spectrum of Christian attitudes toward yoga as demonstrative of contemporary religious imagination in recent United States history. With the booming commodification of yoga as exercise, the physical and mental elements of yoga practice are made safely secular by disassociation from their ostensible religious roots. Commonly deployed phrases, "Yoga is not a religion," or even, "Yoga is a science," open a broad invitation. But the very need for this clarification illustrates yoga's place in the United States as a borderline signifier for spirituality. Vocal concern by both Christians and Hindus demonstrates the tension between perceptions of yoga as a secular commodity and yoga as religiously beget. Alternatively embracing and rejecting yoga's religious history, Christian yoga practitioners reframe and rejoin yoga postures and breathing into their lives of faith. Some proponents name their practice Christian Yoga.

Christian Yoga flourishes as part of contemporary religious and spiritual discourse and practice in books, instructional DVDs, websites and studios throughout the United States. Christian Yoga proponents, professional and lay theologians alike, highlight the diversity of American attitudes toward and understanding of yoga and the heterogeneity of Christianity. For religious studies scholars, Christian Yoga advocates and detractors provide an opportune focal point for inquiry into the evolution of spiritual practice, the dynamics of tradition, experience and authority, and the dialectic nature of evolving cultural attitudes in a religiously plural and complex secular environment.

The Imagination + Imagery model for design pedagogy is presented. Two studies were conducted to develop the model: (a) the visual imagery assessment of design students; and (b) a historical research on the concept of imagination. Results suggest the following implications as the components of strong imagination for design thinkers: (a) the ability to shape vivid images of objects in mind; (b) the ability to mentally transform the spatial representations of images; (c) to consider the ethical consequences of imagined situation; (d) to use imagination for resolving design wicked problems; and (e) to actively imagine for mental and emotional health.

Social scientific scholarship has emphasized how parents’ undocumented legal status might influence the emotional, social, and economic well-being of mixed immigration status families, pointing to a greater need to better understand the lived realities of the undocumented population. Although Arizona is home to a large and growing number of undocumented migrants, a strongly anti-immigrant socio-political environment shapes the experiences and opportunities that migrants encounter. With an estimated 16 million people living in mixed-status families nationwide and over five million children under 18 living with at least one undocumented parent, deportability is an urgent social problem. This qualitative dissertation draws on narrative and discursive methods to shed light on the spatiotemporal dimensions of undocumented migrant mothers’ narratives, with a particular focus on the understudied area of how identities are constructed, performed and/or resisted in narratives of the future. Narrative inquiry is a useful method to explore issues of identity construction and negotiation in migration contexts. Theoretically, my approach leans on identity as a discursive practice, as contextualized and negotiated in storytelling. The study is further guided by a dialogic/performative approach to narrative. Analytic concepts, such as (im)mobility and imagination, and Bakhtinian theory of novelness, particularly dialogism and chronotope, also inform my approach to narrative analysis. Data come from sixteen hours of semi-structured interviews with seven undocumented mothers from Mexico who live in mixed-status families in Arizona. The findings show that the participants oftentimes felt at the bottom of the local social hierarchy due to their undocumented legal status. Furthermore, findings shed light on how the participants perceived, imagined, negotiated and sometimes resisted various social and spatial (im)mobilities in contexts of illness, loss, and grieving. The analysis also demonstrates how the participants navigate their spatiotemporal fragility through discourses of imagination and contrastive chronotopes as they raise their children and consider alternative timespaces for their future.

Tucked peacefully into mountains just north of the City of São Paulo, the largest metropolitan area in South America, sits the Cantareira Reservoir System. This massive water catchment network received worldwide coverage in 2014 and 2015 as one of the worst droughts in a century hit the region, threatening to collapse the system. In the years since the peak of the drought, the media has changed its focus, the reservoirs have begun a slow recovery, but the people of the region have had to live with the consequences of this difficult period. Faced with an uncertain future, the people continue to grapple with the historic struggles of rural life, while being faced by new threats to the social, environmental, and technological order that has for a long time stabilized the region. My thesis explores the narrative imaginaries that individuals have pertaining to their personal future and that of the region. It delves into the identity of the Rural Producer, the battle to conserve and preserve native forest, issues surrounding the governance of common resources, and what actors perceive to be the biggest advantages and threats to the sustainable future of the region. Utilizing a set of twenty expert elicitation interviews, data was collected from a variety of actors representing a number of roles and positions within the system. My analysis connects disparate individual narratives, illuminating how they connect together with the narratives of other respondents, creating a regional narrative that illustrates a set of desired outcomes for the region. This paper does not attempt to operationalize solutions for the issues that face the region, it does however serve to provide a context for the historical and contemporary issues that exist, a means by which to consider how they may be approached, and ultimately as a tool for policy makers to make more informed decisions going forward.

The purpose of this action research study was to better understand how aspiring school leaders orient themselves toward present and future uncertainty and to explore what mindsets and conceptual understandings they believe they need to lead through uncertainty. An innovation, delivered through a graduate course on leading change in a Master of Educational Leadership program, focused on supporting participants’ mindsets and conceptual understanding toward leading change in the midst of uncertainty, including the COVID-19 global pandemic. A total of 34 students participated in this qualitative case study. The educational innovation was designed by this action researcher and was informed by transformative leadership theory, design thinking, and imagination. Four sources of data were used to answer the research questions, including students’ written assignments and video reflection assignments, as well as researcher course observations and semi-structured interviews with participants. Major findings suggested that the educational innovation was effective in supporting participants identity development as transformative leaders, as well as supporting participants’ adoption of design thinking mindsets and use of imagination as tools for leading change in complex systems and during uncertain times.
