Description
The current model of revenue generation for some free to play video games is preventing the companies controlling them from growing, but with a few changes in approach these issues could be alleviated. A new style of video games, called a MOBA (Massive Online Battle Arena) has emerged in the past few years bringing with it a new style of generating wealth. Contrary to past gaming models, where users must either purchase the game outright, view advertisements, or purchase items to gain a competitive advantage, MOBAs require no payment of any kind. These are free to play computer games that provides users with all the tools necessary to compete with anyone free of charge; no advantages can be purchased in this game. This leaves the only way for users to provide money to the company through optional purchases of purely aesthetic items, only to be purchased if the buyer wishes to see their character in a different set of attire. The genre’s best in show—called League of Legends, or LOL—has spearheaded this method of revenue-generation. Fortunately for LOL, its level of popularity has reached levels never seen in video games: the world championships had more viewers than game 7 of the NBA Finals (Dorsey). The player base alone is enough to keep the company afloat currently, but the fact that they only convert 3.75% of the players into revenue is alarming. Each player brings the company an average of $1.32, or 30% of what some other free to play games earn per user (Comparing MMO). It is this low per player income that has caused Riot Games, the developer of LOL, to state that their e-sports division is not currently profitable. To resolve this issue, LOL must take on a more aggressive marketing plan. Advertisements for the NBA Finals cost $460,000 for 30 seconds, and LOL should aim for ads in this range (Lombardo). With an average of 3 million people logged on at any time, 90% of the players being male and 85% being between the ages of 16 and 30, advertising via this game would appeal to many companies, making a deal easy to strike (LOL infographic 2012). The idea also appeals to players: 81% of players surveyed said that an advertisement on the client that allows for the option to place an order would improve or not impact their experience. Moving forward with this, the gaming client would be updated to contain both an option to order pizza and an advertisement for Mountain Dew. This type of advertising was determined based on community responses through a sequence of survey questions. These small adjustments to the game would allow LOL to generate enough income for Riot Games to expand into other areas of the e-sports industry.

Description
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the USA and throughout the world. Two phenotypes that promote this deadly outcome are the invasive potential of NSCLC and the emergence of therapeutic resistance in this disease. There is an unmet clinical need to understand the mechanisms that govern NSCLC cell invasion and therapeutic resistance, and to target these phenotypes towards abating the dismal five-year survival of NSCLC. The expression of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, member 12A (TNFRSF12A; Fn14) correlates with poor patient survival and invasiveness in many tumor types including NSCLC. We hypothesize that suppression of Fn14 will inhibit NSCLC cell motility and reduce cell viability. Here we demonstrate that atorvastatin calcium treatment reduces Fn14 expression in NSCLC cell lines. Prior to Fn14 protein suppression, atorvastatin calcium modulated the expression of the Fn14 modulators P-ERK1/2 and P-NF-κβ. Atorvastatin calcium treatment inhibited the migratory capacity in H1975, H2030 and H1993 cells by at least 55%. When chemotactic migration in H2030 cells was induced by the Fn14 ligand TNF-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) treatment, atorvastatin calcium successfully negated any stimulatory effects. Inversely, treatment of NSCLC cells with cholesterol resulted in a statistically significant increase in migration. Depletion of Fn14 expression via siRNA suppressed the migratory effect of cholesterol. Finally, atorvastatin calcium treatment sensitized cells to radiation treatment, reducing cell survival. These data suggest that atorvastatin calcium may inhibit NSCLC invasiveness through a mechanism involving Fn14, and may be a novel therapeutic target in NSCLC tumors expressing Fn14.

The purpose of this thesis study was to examine whether the "war on cancer" metaphor influences cancer perception and treatment decision. A total of 249 undergraduates (152 females) from a large southwestern university participated in an online survey experiment and were either randomly assigned to the control condition (N=123) or to the war prime condition (N=126). Participants in the control condition did not receive the metaphor manipulation while participants in the war prime condition received the subtle "war on cancer" metaphor prime. After the prime was given, participants read a scenario, answered questions related to the situation, and responded to demographic questions. The results suggested that, compared to participants in the no-prime condition, participants exposed to the war metaphor were more likely to (a) view melanoma as an acute disease, (b) choose chemotherapy over molecular tests, and (c) prefer more aggressive treatment. These findings illustrated the unintended consequences of the "war on cancer" slogan. The results were encouraging and in the predicted direction, but the effect size was small. The discussion section described possible future directions for research.

After researching pediatric cancer experiences, an opportunity emerged creating a less intimidating environment for children undergoing chemotherapy. By means of adding a creative component to their IV pole and disguising machinery, children will be a part of an Imagination Voyage adventure. Creative themes allow for a journey on a pirate ship, or being in a fantasy castle by captivating children in playtime. The design allows for a frightening experience to become a positive one.

Description
With the National Labor Relations Board's decision to allow Northwestern University football players to unionize, the landscape of college athletics is changing very quickly. Due to their recognition as employees of the University, football players at Northwestern will receive many benefits that they would not have received before. They will be able to bargain for the things they want including: scholarships that cover the cost of attendance, increased medical coverage, measures to increase graduation rates, a safer game, and due process with the NCAA. However, this will come at a cost to the general welfare. Subsidies to athletic departments will continue to rise on college campuses due to the increasing costs of athletics and that cost will be incurred regressively on students. With an outcry from students, universities may be forced to stop the increase in subsidies, which may force some athletic departments to cut certain sports according to some parameters set by government legislation and the NCAA.

Description
South Mountain is the largest municipal park in the nation. It is a bundled amenity, providing a series of linked services to the surrounding communities. A dataset of 19,209 homes in 155 neighborhoods within three miles of the park was utilized in order to complete a hedonic estimation for two nearby urban villages, Ahwatukee Foothills and South Mountain Village. Measures of access include proximity to the park, trailhead access, and adjacency to the park. Two regressions were estimated, the first including lot characteristics and subdivision fixed effects and the second using the coefficients for each subdivision as the dependent variable. These estimates describe how the location of a house in a subdivision contributes to its conditional mean price. As a result they offer a direct basis for capturing amenities measured at the neighborhood scale on home values. Park proximity, trailhead access and adjacency were found to significantly influence the price of homes at the 5% confidence level in Ahwatukee, but not in South Mountain Village. The results of this study can be applied to issues of environmental justice and park access in determining which areas and attributes of the park are associated with a high premium. Though South Mountain was preserved some time ago, development and future preservation in the City of Phoenix can be informed by such studies.

The purpose of this project is to explore the benefit of using prodrugs in chemotherapy, as well as to explain the concept of angiogenesis and the importance of this process to tumor development. Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood capillaries that are necessary for the survival of a tumor, as a tumor cannot grow larger than 1-2 mm3 without developing its own blood supply. Vascular disrupting agents, such as iodocombstatin, a derivative of combretastatin, can be used to effectively cut off the blood supply to a growing neoplasm, effectively inhibiting the supply of oxygen and nutrients needed for cell division Thus, VDAs have a very important implication in terms of the future of chemotherapy. A prodrug, defined as an agent that is inactive in the body until metabolized to yield the drug itself, was synthesized by combining iodocombstatin with a β-glucuronide linker. The prodrug is theoretically hydrolyzed in the body to afford the active drug by β-glucuronidase, an enzyme that is produced five times as much by cancer cells as by normal cells. This effectively creates a “magic-bullet” form of chemotherapy, known as Direct Enzyme Prodrug Therapy (DEPT).

Description
For the average person, the criminal justice system can be a bureaucratic and confusing process. It is for exactly these reasons, many defendants will choose to spend exorbitant amounts of money to prove their innocence or hide their guilt. Therefore, when thinking from an economic perspective, one begins to wonder whether or not the vast amounts of money allocated to building a legal defense, actually have statistical impact on the outcome of the sentence. Or, if perhaps it is the characteristics of the defendant, the case, or the judge that truly account for the determination of the final verdict.

Former two-time Costa Rican president Dr. Oscar Arias advocates for arms control between nations and, in some cases, complete disarmament as the first step in solving grave issues of international sustainability. The three spheres of sustainability—society, economy, and environment—are explained and the ultimate goal of the compromise between all three aspects is defined as the means to achieving sustainability. A brief history of the politics and culture of Costa Rica provides a glimpse into the values and society of this Central American country, including a consistent commitment to the appreciation and protection of its natural environment. Dr. Arias is credited as one of the founding fathers of the sustainable development movement, as evidenced by his political career and policies both with Costa Rica and with other international communities. A selection of Dr. Arias’ speeches and conversations of the past four decades illuminates the need for disarmament and peaceful political interactions as the catalyst for human progress and sustainable development.

Description
Despite the 40-year war on cancer, very limited progress has been made in developing a cure for the disease. This failure has prompted the reevaluation of the causes and development of cancer. One resulting model, coined the atavistic model of cancer, posits that cancer is a default phenotype of the cells of multicellular organisms which arises when the cell is subjected to an unusual amount of stress. Since this default phenotype is similar across cell types and even organisms, it seems it must be an evolutionarily ancestral phenotype. We take a phylostratigraphical approach, but systematically add species divergence time data to estimate gene ages numerically and use these ages to investigate the ages of genes involved in cancer. We find that ancient disease-recessive cancer genes are significantly enriched for DNA repair and SOS activity, which seems to imply that a core component of cancer development is not the regulation of growth, but the regulation of mutation. Verification of this finding could drastically improve cancer treatment and prevention.
