In the United States, more than 22 million people are estimated to be affected by the chronic illness, asthma (American Lung Association [ALA], 2014). Of those 22 million, approximately 7.1 million are children (ALA, 2014). An important factor in trying to curb the frequency of asthma attacks is education. Particular elements of asthma education include symptom recognition, self-management skills, correct administration, and understanding how medications are used to control asthma. A review of the literature shows that multimedia education holds some promise in increasing asthma-knowledge retention. This creative project involved the creation of an asthma-education video with a concomitant asthma-education comic book. Of the two creations, the asthma-education video was used in a former Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) student’s study to supplement a session at a clinic with an asthma educator. The tools included in the study, the Asthma Medication Use Questionnaire (Moya, 2014) and the Asthma Control TestTM (ACTTM; QualityMetric Incorporated, 2002), were completed by the participants prior to and after the implementation of the session that incorporated the video. The results suggested that the video had an effect on asthma control as measured by the ACTTM (QualityMetric Incorporated, 2002), but not on daily preventative asthma inhaler usage as measured by the Asthma Medication Use Questionnaire (Moya, 2014). The comic book has not been evaluated yet. Both multimedia education tools—the comic book and the video—were created as a requirement for the Barrett thesis.

Objective: To explain the origins of the pediatric asthma cluster present in south and central phoenix, and propose potential solutions to combat this cluster. Methods: A comprehensive literature review of the different factors that contribute to asthma starting at a national level and working down to the Maricopa county level was conducted. Afterwards a literature review of past pediatric asthma intervention case studies was conducted. The results of both literature reviews were synthesized in regards to applicability in south and central phoenix. Results: A combined targeted intervention in health care delivery, patient/clinician education, and housing status/infrastructure could yield promising results in regards to combatting the pediatric asthma cluster in south and central phoenix.

There is a higher incidence of asthma, worse outcomes, and a higher burden of disease in Black Americans compared to white Americans. This thesis aims to understand asthma disparities in the Black population by analyzing a variety of social determinants of health and genetic factors that may contribute to these racial health disparities. Based on the evidence collected, a variety of interventions are discussed that explore potential solutions to address the critical issue.

The purpose of this project was to develop and validate a novel lateral

Eosinophil peroxidase (EPX) is a marker of eosinophilic inflammation in allergic diseases. Currently, measuring EPX in nasal swabs as a surrogate for airway eosinophil levels is completed using a gold standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) lab test. The purpose of this project was to develop and validate a novel lateral flow assay (LFA) that measures EPX with the same sensitivity and range of detection as the gold standard EPX ELISA, but that can be efficiently used in clinical settings. The results of this project show that the EPX LFA is a promising method for measuring EPX in nasal swab samples. While future studies are needed for further validation, the EPX LFA could provide rapid point-of-care EPX measurements for clinicians and patients suffering with eosinophil-associated diseases.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in the United States, being diagnosed in over 20 million Americans. The condition is even more common among young children, and their academic performance and ability to attend school can be negatively impacted by poorly-managed asthma. Digital therapeutics are therapeutic interventions driven by high quality software programs to prevent, manage, or treat a medical disorder or disease. Technology in the healthcare space is rapidly improving, and smart devices are becoming more common everyday. How can digital therapeutics and evolving technology be implemented to make life easier for those that suffer from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease? My research seeks to answer the overarching question: How might we improve the day-to-day experience of children with asthma? Airie is a system of devices and products that educate both asthmatic children and their parents about the condition, facilitate self-monitoring and asthma management skills, and improve overall quality of life.
