The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of two modes of exercise on depression in adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). Twelve participants randomly completed one of two exercise interventions. The interventions were: 1) Voluntary Cycling (VC), in which participants cycled at their self-selected pedaling rate 2) Assisted Cycling (AC), in which the participants' voluntary pedaling rates were augmented with a motor to ensure the maintenance of 80 rpms. In each intervention, the participant completed three cycling sessions each week for a total of eight weeks. Depression scores did decrease or improved after both AC and VC, but not significantly. There was a greater mean improvement for participants in the AC group than VC when analyzing total score and t-score. Future research will include a greater sample size and control group to reach significant results as well as try and reveal the mechanisms involved in these mental health improvements found after an acute bout of assisted cycling in adolescents with DS.

This study was conducted to examine the potential effects of exercise training on partial spinal cord injury on locomotor recovery in juvenile rats. Three groups were tested, where three female Long-Evans rats 10-12 weeks of age were studied for their locomotion. All animals underwent a T8-T9 laminectomy and two of the three in each group received a dorsal, partial spinal cord injury. Locomotion was then analyzed every week, over 8-10 weeks. One of the two injured animals was given open access to a wheel after 2 weeks for voluntary exercise training. The results of this study suggested that injured animals displayed more irregular stepping patterns, larger hindlimb bases of support, greater and more variable interpaw distances, slower hindlimb speed, and increased dependency of swing-phase duty cycle on hindlimb speed. Trained animals displayed quicker recovery of stepping patterns, stepping of the hindpaw in relation to the preceding ipsilateral forepaw, and higher swing-duty cycle dependency on hindlimb speed in comparison to injured animals that did not receive exercise training. Due to a small sample size, there was a large amount of variation between individual animals in most parameters. These results are considered to be potential effects that may be seen in further study with a larger sample size. The research team will continue the research project to examine changes in neural pathways in the spinal cord and the effects of exercise on recovery after injury.

Physical activity has been shown to have a multitude of physical health benefits, including reduction of risk of certain illnesses and an overall improvement in physical and cognitive functioning. Current intervention techniques work to improve physical activity habits in participants through education about these long-term health benefits. However, most individuals living in the United States are not currently reaching ideal amounts of physical activity, suggesting that these interventions have not been entirely effective. Might an intervention that fosters intrinsic motivation via exercise enjoyment be more effective? The current study sought to compare a long-term health benefit-focused intervention to an alternative that focuses on immediate enjoyment of exercise. Participants were randomly assigned to one of these two intervention conditions. Participants reported their time spent doing physical activity and level of enjoyment of physical activity pre- and post-intervention. We found no significant differences between conditions. Frequency and enjoyment of physical activity increased post-intervention, regardless of condition. Future research should be done to correct the limitations of this study and gain a more accurate view into which factors are most important in exercise motivation.

At the end of the paper, you will find a brochure we made specifically for the college student struggling with anxiety or depression.
