The purpose of the Preschool Intervention for Embodied Storytelling (PIES) study was to evaluate the efficacy of a drama-based story time intervention on at-risk preschool students’ emotion knowledge, story retell and story comprehension skills. Six classrooms with 44 students were randomly assigned into drama-based intervention and dialogic reading control groups.

The purpose of the Preschool Intervention for Embodied Storytelling (PIES) study was to evaluate the efficacy of a drama-based story time intervention on at-risk preschool students’ emotion knowledge, story retell and story comprehension skills. Six classrooms with 44 students were randomly assigned into drama-based intervention and dialogic reading control groups. After four weeks of intervention sessions twice per week, students’ emotion knowledge and story retell skills were assessed with distal measures. During the program, students’ comprehension of the stories was evaluated weekly. Participants did not show significant main effects on any measures, however investigation of simple effects revealed differences in gains over time for intervention students in their story retell skills. Despite lack of significance, effect sizes for story retell were promising. Mean differences in story comprehension skills were consistently in favor of the intervention group for the duration of the program. Teacher participants showed an increase in their positive perceptions of drama-based instruction, but their own use of these strategies at story time was variable before and after observing the PIES program. Drama based instruction through PIES may be a favorable intervention strategy for preschool students as they develop narrative skills that are a prerequisite for future reading comprehension success.

Research suggests there is no significant difference in outcomes for online learners and on-campus learners. Several decades of online learning have also consistently demonstrated online students are less likely to persist than those students attending on campus. The Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework describes social presence, teaching presence, and cognitive presence as components of a quality online learning experience, and research links these three constructs to student retention. Using the lens of the CoI framework, this mixed methods action research study sought to increase social presence and teaching presence in asynchronous online courses at Davenport University using embedded video feedback mechanisms, in support of student persistence and retention. The Community of Inquiry survey instrument was used to quantitatively measure the changes in social presence and teaching presence between courses with and without the video feedback mechanisms. Qualitative research interviews were conducted to probe for meaning and a greater understanding of both student and instructor experiences in the courses. Results of the study indicated small but significant gains in teaching presence, but other quantitative measures showed no changes with the introduction of the videos. Qualitative analysis suggests that students who watched the instructor videos reported higher levels of teaching presence for several subconstructs of teaching presence and social presence. However, the qualitative analysis also suggested that many students did not watch the instructor videos, and thus did not benefit from any increased presence. Student discussion response videos yielded similar results qualitatively, with benefits demonstrated by those students who watched the videos but none by those who abstained.

Active-duty service members pursuing college degrees face many obstacles due to their military service, such as frequent relocation, long work hours, extended field time, and deployments. While online learning makes higher education more accessible to service members, asynchronous courses can leave active-duty students feeling that online education is lacking in social or peer connection. The purpose of this action research study was to use the Community of Inquiry Framework, as well as Self-Determination Theory, to investigate the results of an intervention, called the R&R Journal, on the social presence, cognitive presence, attitude, and overall academic outcome of active-duty service members enrolled in online, asynchronous HIST 1301 at Central Texas College. This study uses a quasi-experimental concurrent mixed methods design with both treatment and comparison course groups. Results indicate that active-duty students who participated in the intervention increased in social presence, cognitive presence, and overall academic outcome over the course of HIST 1301. Implications for practice include (a) increasing social presence by encouraging peer to peer connection in an asynchronous course through deeper analysis of discussion boards, (b) increasing cognitive presence by challenging students to make personal connections to course material, and (c) increasing cognitive presence by encouraging relevant, modern-day connections to course material.

The primary purpose of this research was to evaluate the differences in retention intention between men and women in collegiate aviation programs. Data was collected through the use of surveys and follow-up interviews. It was found that women are no more likely than men to consider dropping out of their academic institution or abandoning the pursuit of a career in aviation. Regardless of retention intention, women in collegiate aviation programs report a much lower sense of belonging than men, which can be attributed to low self-efficacy, a lack of representation of women, and feeling disconnected from both peers and faculty. All of the women interviewed did not identify gender as a salient identity when describing these similar experiences and instead pointed to other social identities and factors to explain their feelings. Survey and interview results, however, indicate that women in collegiate aviation programs often responded to questions similarly regardless of experience level, race and ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

This study examines how critical pedagogical practices of testimonies and contradiction and resistance coupled with agentive techniques engaged youth in holistic identity development in a sustainable education context. Using a three-phase design, I analyzed the structure of the Urban Energy Engineering (UEE) citizen science program that engages youth in community-centered energy engineering. The design sought to answer the overarching question: How does critical pedagogy in which students build on their cultural and community knowledge to co-construct knowledge about sustainability while engaging in community-centered projects that promote agency impact their holistic identity development? Using a for intervention model, I used archived data for the summer iteration to develop two analyses to examine how the program engages youth in identity development, agency, and positionality in their community. These analyses influenced my design innovation and implementation with the UEE youth during the spring semester. Findings of my design innovation are organized into three sections (a) coupling of practice towards holistic identity, (b) understanding the relationship between identity and community, and lastly, (c) understanding the relationship between identity and sustainability correlating with my research questions. Lastly, I discuss the design principle necessary to engage youth in holistic identity development (a) Facilitators should provide their own experience and (b) Frame the levels of the individual to the community in agentive practice and critical pedagogical practices.

It is common for graduate programs to be plagued by delays in on-time student completion or to experience student attrition. Students have experienced such delays in a local program at the University where I am employed as a lecturer. Therefore, this dissertation was undertaken with the aim of supporting university students at the graduate level toward successful on-time completion of their programs. This action research study was multi-phased in its approach; with data collection, and reflection driving the process for intervention delivery and subsequent evaluation. A dynamic approach which included some components of greater structure than was previously seen in the program, was designed for implementation. It was envisaged that this approach would serve as a model of support for students. The following chapters written in article format details the cycles of action research undertaken as part of this dissertation. The first article tells a story written for a wider audience. While the second article presents a more direct look at the implementation of the dynamic structured approach, and lessons learned through the experiential stories of the students. The dynamic structured approach is a framework which was created from a synergetic review of studies on the issues of attrition and delayed completion in graduate programs. The approach was therefore discussed in hopes that it can be used as a model in other graduate programs to ensure that students are supported in a holistic manner. Further, recommendations were made to bolster the approach based on the lessons learned from its initial implementation as well as through the reflections of the researcher-practitioner. The approach has built-in flexibility and is open to refinement and modification to suit the needs of varying institutions for future use.

Engineering leadership is an emerging research area in engineering education that aligns well with recent attention to the production of leaders and diverse engineers. While engineering leadership studies have highlighted elements such as the skills, traits, and behaviors required in pursuing and executing leadership, there is a narrow focus on the current work that also considers marginalized engineers' leadership experiences. Currently, studies that explore engineering leadership as investigations have occurred without consideration of the ways identity also factors into leadership experiences. This work considers the experiences and perspectives of early-career Black engineers engaged in leadership. The research questions that guided this study were: What are the experiences of early-career Black engineers that influence their leadership development? Through the stories of early career Black engineers, what conceptualizations of leadership are illuminated because of explicit and intentional consideration of racial identity in engineering leadership performance and development? How do early-career Black engineers navigate leadership in their professional journeys? The following frameworks guided this work: Komives' Leadership Identity Development Model, Esteban-Guitart's Funds of Identity, McGee's Stereotype Management Theory, and Campbell's Theory of the Monomyth. This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry and semi-structured interviews and captures the stories from six early-career Black engineers. The findings from these stories illuminated the following elements of engineering leadership: a sense of duty and agency to lead, the power of mentorship, and the complex role of managing identity in leadership. This work illustrates strategies encouraging engineering institutions, organizations, and enterprises to consider how leadership is conceptualized and actualized for Black engineers. This study intentionally centers on the authentic voices of Black engineers and considers how personal identity impacts the pursuit and execution of leadership and leadership development. Such considerations have the potential to influence engineering leadership development programs and initiatives that incorporate the unique perspectives of Black engineers.

Student voice has been an inactive component of public education since its conception. Educational practitioners and stakeholders create, define, and uphold federal, state, and local policy centered on growing student educational outcomes. However, most often students are not provided space or opportunities to actively engage with policy or decisions that directly impact their educational experiences. To boost student voice, this action research study explored school participatory budgeting’s impact on student engagement with school decision-making, civic engagement, and leadership development at Arcadia High School. School participatory budgeting (SPB) is an innovative civic learning tool designed for students to learn democracy in action through the process of participating in the student voice committee on campus, developing proposals, and voting to fund improvement projects that build a stronger school community. This study utilized a parallel-results convergent MMAR that involved collecting both qualitative and quantitative data simultaneously, analyzing them separately, and integrating results into study findings. Participants included eight students that were members of the student voice committee. Study participants completed pre- and post-surveys as well as participated in a focus group. The study and intervention were supported by Mitra’s Pyramid of Student Voice and The Social Change Model. Results of the study indicated that school participatory budgeting had a positive impact on students’ engagement with school decision making, civic engagement, and leadership development. Results also revealed that participants were able to lead change for collective student voice, engage civically through real world application, encourage participatory democracy over elite democracy, and increase both communication and collaborative skills. Furthermore, an integration of quantitative and qualitative data was presented, along with connections to the existing research questions and literature. Additional discussion centered on the limitations of the study, implications for practice, future cycles of research, and recommendations for educational practitioners.

My research explored two issues in leadership development: how busy executives can sustainably learn with flexibility and efficiency and how to cultivate a grace-based approach to leadership. This is a dissertation in practice that offers an alternative format from traditional research yet still advances professional knowledge, rigorous thinking and complex problem-solving. This reimagined manuscript includes a multi-modal presentation of the theory, methods, analysis and findings for an emerging leadership concept and an improved direction for mobile learning research. These findings can be experienced by listening to an embedded podcast series and reading draft articles for academic and business media journals that speak to the audience of influencers in my professional context of leadership researchers, advisors and coaches. The learning innovation involved is a podcast called Giving Grace Matters that includes narrative and interviews with high-performing executives about a grace-based approach to leadership, and the qualitative analysis of these interviews served as the basis for constructing the knowledge about this leadership concept using three guiding theories: Planned Behavior, Self-Determination, and Intentional Change. The research identified the novel concept of a grace-based approach to leadership that can be applied in organizations as well as the need for further evaluation of how a flexible learning framework for microlearning experiences, such as podcasts, can be intentionally designed.

International schools work to serve students from a variety of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. When a student is developing proficiency in a language, they have difficulty accessing content in that language. In order to support all of their students, including those developing language proficiency, teachers have to implement differentiated instruction.This mixed methods action research study set within the context of an international school in Madagascar sought to empower secondary teachers to support the English language learners in their classes. The innovation consisted of a professional learning community focused on English language learners as well as a digital toolkit of resources aligned with the content of the professional learning community meetings. The group of seven participants met a total of three times over the course of three months during the first semester of the school year. After their participation, they demonstrated little change in self-efficacy, although they did have a stronger understanding of the resources available to them within the local context. Through the innovation, the participants developed a common understanding of the concept of differentiation in addition to expanding their knowledge of teaching strategies. Most notably, the format of the professional learning community proved to be an effective and useful way to allow the participants to connect with one another, share their experiences, and gain relevant information regarding language acquisition and strategies for differentiation.
