Currently, Arizona State University's West Campus offers students a Bachelor's of Science degree in Forensics. This degree program has been at ASU's West campus for over three years now and is at its capacity of 300 students due to limitations on lab space. In order to support the growth and provide students with a valuable experience, the Math and Natural Sciences department seeks to create a "fee-for-service" enterprise within the Forensics division. This new lab called the Arizona State University Forensic Science Center (ASU-FSC) would serve city, county, state, and federal government agencies. The mission of the ASU-FSC is to provide robust, accurate and efficient forensic services while leading innovation in research and education in forensics for Arizona, the Southwest and the country. The School of Natural Science and Mathematics has sought help from W. P. Carey School of Business students to analyze the possibility of adding a Forensics fee-for-service lab to ASU West campus. The deliverables from this report will provide a comprehensive marketing, supply chain and financial review of all aspects of the business, and will aid in the decision making process for the creation of the Arizona State University Forensic Science Center.

The goal of this research is to answer the questions 1) What is innovation? 2) Why is innovation important? 3) How does leadership impact the effectiveness in driving innovation? 4) How can insight be taught to other individuals who would like to drive innovation in their own practice? By defining leadership characteristics, actions, and attributes, a tangible framework was created which can be utilized by any leader as a guiding point to drive innovation. Data for this project was collected through two channels: a survey which was administered to individuals who identified primarily as undergraduates and professionals, then interviews were conducted with individuals who are recognized as innovative leaders. Interview participants were selected based on recommendations from peers, awards, and accolades received. The questions in the survey focused on collecting data on the general perception and understanding of what an innovative leader is compared to traditional change management elements. Interview questions honed in on specific information regarding leadership approaches, group dynamic techniques, and personal characteristics in relation to leadership style. The findings from the study can be used for positive impact on universities and organizations.

The topic of our project "Innovation and the City of Tomorrow Through a Supply Chain Perspective" derives from the fields of Innovation, Supply Chain Management, and Public Policy. Many people ask themselves about the future, how will it look? To answer this question, we conducted research about how the city of Tempe, in Arizona, can utilize emerging technology to address its societal needs by the year 2035. With an expected 35 percent increase in population, the city will need to find ways to house, transport, and provide access to the basic needs of their constituents. To tackle these problems, we considered innovative technologies and trends and analyzed their outcomes through the magnifying glass of supply chain, offering insight into how these technologies are disrupting their respective industries and most importantly, who benefits and who loses. Because the topic is so broad, we have decided to focus on addressing societal needs that are essential for Tempe to satisfy the needs of their constituents as they attempt to become one of the most thriving cities in America. Those critical needs are: residential development, electricity needs, and transportation.

Having studied at Arizona State University and the W.P. Carey School of Business through approximately 7 semesters of undergraduate business coursework, I, along with my classmates, have learned an incredible amount of knowledge critical for success in a career in business administration. We have been provided the resources and tools necessary to excel in full time business careers, implement new ideas, and innovate and improve preexisting business networks as driven, motivated business intellectuals. Additionally, having worked in four diverse business internships throughout my undergraduate career, I have come to understand the importance of understanding and studying law and contracts as they relate to business. In all of those internships, I worked extensively with a variety of contracts and agreements, all serving critical purposes within each individual line of business. Within supply chain management studies and jobs, I found contracts to be of utmost importance for students to understand prior to entering a full time job or internship. Students study a wide variety of topics during their education within the Supply Chain Management department at Arizona State University. In procurement and purchasing classes specifically, students cover topics from supplier negotiation strategies to sourcing and sustainability. These topics engage students of all backgrounds and offer exceptional knowledge and insight for those seeking a full time job within supply chain management. What is interestingly so often excluded from such lectures is discussion with regards to the contracts and laws pertinent to purchasing and supply management success. As most procurement and sourcing professionals know, contracts are the basis for all agreements that a company and supplier may engage in. A critical component within the careers of supply managers, contract law provides the foundation for any agreement. Thus, the necessity for a discussion on how to best integrate purchasing and contract law into undergraduate supply chain management education, including depicting the material that should be covered, is permitted. In my Honors Thesis, I have decided to create an informative lecture and outline that can be readily understood by undergraduate students in supply chain management courses, at the benefit of professors and lecturers who wish to utilize and incorporate the material in their classroom. The content consists of information recommended by industry professionals, relevant real-life procurement and contract law examples and scenarios, and universal and common law relevant to contracts and purchasing agreements within the workplace. All of these topics are meant to prepare students for careers and internships within supply chain management, and are topics I have found lack current discussion at the university level. Additionally, as a part of my Honors Thesis, I was given the opportunity to provide a cohesive lecture and present the topics herein in SCM 355 Purchasing classes. This was an opportunity to present to students topics that I feel are currently underrepresented in college courses, and that are beneficial for business students to learn and fully understand. Topics discussed in this interactive lecture and slideshow extracted information from the lecture template.

The purpose of this thesis is to convince readers of the benefits of cross-functional collaboration and innovation within the W. P. Carey School of Business. Specifically, cross-functional collaboration is the "innovation" that is being discussed and will be presented. Written from the perspective of a current business student, this thesis incorporates secondary research as well as personal experience to explain why this would benefit the business school at Arizona State University. The research conducted stems from online resources such as the Harvard Business Review, Kai Nexus, Forbes and other websites and explains why the author decided to pursue this topic. Cross-functional collaboration is seen in the everyday workings of the business world and are a utilized by a multitude of successful companies \u2014 Dell, Intel, Amazon, Apple and other similar companies. Therefore, it should be taken advantage of within undergraduate education in order to better prepare students for what they may experience afterwards. In addition, a majority of the paper is dedicated to recommendations for how exactly cross-functional collaboration could be incorporated, as well as examples of successful cross-functional courses and teams. These recommendations will be beneficial to business and general faculty members and can contribute to positive organizational change at the university.

For decades, firms and individuals have utilized written documents to aid in the negotiation of, and completion of, business transactions. One such document is known as a "letter of intent." A letter of intent is often in the form of a letter that serves to evidence preliminary discussions and aid in negotiations between parties. They are generally intended to be "non-binding," meaning neither party will be bound by terms or conditions set forth in the letter of intent unless formal documents are later prepared and executed by the parties. Letters of intent take myriad forms and names, such as "memorandum of understanding," "proposal letter," and "letter of interest." They have been used in many areas of business, including finance, real estate, and supply chain management. Parties often choose to use a letter of intent for varied benefits it may provide, memorializing preliminary discussions, establishing a timeline for negotiations, seeing whether there are any "deal breakers" among terms being proposed, confirming that a party is serious about a deal, or putting moral pressure on the other party to continue negotiations. However, letters of intent carry with them a significant level of risk, which raises the question of whether or not they should be used at all. Many of the risks associated with the use of a letter of intent stems from the potential for a court to find that a letter of intent constitutes a binding agreement, or creates a duty of the parties to continue negotiations in good faith. Parties to a letter of intent may later disagree as to whether they intended all of the terms, or a particular provision, to be legally binding and enforceable, resulting in legal action. Even if a court finds that a letter of intent does not constitute a binding contract, a party may be able to recover damages under a number of legal theories, such as breach of a duty to negotiate in good faith or promissory estoppel. The use of letters of intent is therefore risky, and ultimately, the risks may outweigh the benefits of utilizing letters of intent. This thesis studies the types, uses, benefits, and risks associated with the use of letters of intent, including an examination of statutes and cases that have been applied by courts in disputes surrounding their use. Ways to mitigate the risks of use are also examined including simple practices such as not signing a letter of intent and using a separate document for any terms which must be binding, such as a "no shop" clause. A proposed legislative solution is also discussed that would prevent letters of intent not explicitly intended to be binding and meeting statutory requirements from being enforced in court, thereby substantially reducing the risks associated with the use of letters of intent.

This study aims to find measurable approaches to achieve sustainable closed-loop supply chain. The proposed methodology here was initiated with my experience that was gained through InnovationSpace Program. InnovationSpace Program is a year-long multidisciplinary product-design and development program hosted by Arizona State University that aims to tackle societal problems. Inspired by the Design Thinking framework, I found out that much more effort would need to be done from the beginning stage of product design in order to achieve real and cohesive improvement in industries today. Thinking about the concepts of reverse logistics within supply chain and the planned obsolescence during the product design stage, I would like to come out some more efficient and measurable long-term supply chain planning for the industries, regarding its different production lines and the properties of its products.

Through the process of writing the sustainability report for InnovationSpace program, I had gained deeper understanding about applying sustainability concept into daily business procedures. As supply chain is defined as the oversight over materials, services, information and finances flowed within and among companies and industries, the new innovative supply chain management can be better adjusted according to the concern of any sustainable impact to all the stakeholders and communities. After gathering the information from industries and listening to the suggestions from academic insights, I then finalized the proposed innovative sustainability strategy for the supply chain management nowadays and I called it as Diamond Index.

Through the lens of the physical and non-physical flows within the supply chain, this paper will analyze the societal implications of the transition to centralized factory operations following the Industrial revolution of the 18th century. The industrialized means of mass places heavy value on centralized operations as a means of establishing competitive advantages in economies of scale and standardized quality. With the emergence of new technologies such as additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence and blockchain, the direct labor required to produce goods and services greatly diminishes. The current trend towards the automation of physical production processes highlights a fundamental shift towards a service-based economy. This will serve as the foundation and introduction to assess the current production landscape and propose a theoretical model for labor and management “Contractor.io” to serve as a task management protocol for the contracting of labor as society transitions into an increasingly digital serviced based economy.
