The purpose of this study was to determine how I, as a future teacher, can best combat inequities in technological access and fluency in my future classroom. In this study, I explored a range of literature on the role of technology in the classroom, the digital divide in home and school settings, and variance in digital literacy. Additional insight was gained through interviews and observing school faculty in three public school districts in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. This provided a better understanding of local context in order to gain a sense of the national and local realities of the digital landscape as they relate to educational equity in the educational settings where I aim to serve as a certified teacher.

In this creative thesis project I use digital “scrolleytelling” (an interactive scroll-based storytelling) to investigate diversity & inclusion at big tech companies. I wanted to know why diversity numbers were flatlining at Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Google, and took a data journalism approach to explore the relationship between what corporations were saying versus what they were doing. Finally, I critiqued diversity and inclusion by giving examples of how the current way we are addressing D&I is not fixing the problem.

Computer-based auditory training programs (CBATPs) are used as an at-home aural rehabilitation solution in individuals with hearing impairment, most commonly in recipients of cochlear implants or hearing aids. However, recent advancements in spatial audio and immersive gameplay have not seen inclusion in these programs. Isle Aliquo, a virtual-reality CBATP, is designed to reformat traditional rehabilitation exercises into virtual 3D space. The program explores how the aural exercise outcomes of detection, discrimination, direction, and identification can be improved with the incorporation of directional spatial audio, as well as how the experience can be made more engaging to improve adherence to training routines. Fundamentals of professional aural rehabilitation and current CBATP design inform the structure of the exercise modules found in Isle Aliquo.
