The findings show that the socially ingrained aspect of sports is the reason that most lower level athletes keep competing.

With the rising prevalence of obesity and diabetes, novel treatments to help mitigate or prevent symptoms of these conditions are warranted. Prior studies have shown that fossilized plant materials found in soil lowers blood sugar in a mouse model of diabetes. The goal of this study is to determine whether a similar organometallic complex (OMC) could prevent insulin resistance in the skeletal muscle brought on by chronic high fat intake by examining the protein expression of key enzymes in the insulin signaling pathway and examining glucoregulatory measures. Six-week-old periadolescent male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=42) were randomly chosen to be fed either a high fat diet (HFD) (20% protein, 20% carbohydrates [6.8% sucrose], 60% fat) or a standard chow diet (18.9% protein, 57.33% carbohydrates, 5% fat) for 10 weeks. Rats from each diet group were then randomly assigned to one of three doses of OMC (0, 0.6, 3.0 mg/mL), which was added to their drinking water and fasting blood glucose was measured at baseline and again at 10 weeks. After 10 weeks, rats were euthanized, and soleus muscle samples were isolated, snap-frozen, and stored at -80°C until analyses. Fasting plasma glucose was measured using a commercially available glucose oxidase kit. Following 6 and 10 weeks, HFD rats developed significant hyperglycemia (p<0.001 and p=0.025) compared to chow controls which was prevented by high dose OMC (p=0.021). After 10 weeks, there were significant differences in fasting serum insulin between diets (p=0.009) where levels were higher in HFD rats. No significant difference was seen in p-PI3K expression between groups. These results suggest that OMC could prevent insulin resistance by reducing hyperglycemia. Further studies are needed to characterize the effects of diet and OMC on the insulin signaling pathway in skeletal muscle, the main site of postprandial glucose disposal. This thesis proposes the creation of a web service, Pulse, which will function as a content aggregator for the hardcore eSports fan. The hardcore eSports fan is characterized as an individual who (1) spends at least 10 hours a week consuming or engaging in eSports content, (2) follow multiple eSports personas (players or teams), and (3) have streamed or attended at least one eSports tournament. This segment of the eSports fanbase is targeted because it represents a very invested portion of the 380 million total eSports fans engaged with streaming and potentially attending live events and purchasing team merchandise (Newzoo 2018). The eSports industry itself is expected to reach almost a billion dollars in 2018, and Pulse will seek by capitalize on this record valuation by connecting fans to the highlights they love and performance metrics they wish to see for a given eSports Participant.

Pulse will stand out from its competitors by offering the hardcore eSports fan a digital space that provides them everything they care about eSports at a glance. From tracking Participant and franchise metrics to notifying them of an upcoming event, Pulse will sort through the eSports data stream and present its users with a customizable aggregation feed to sort through in a social media-type environment. Forum posts and comment sections on highlight videos will also be included to facilitate a social experience for the browsing user if he or she wishes to engage with the wider Pulse community. The web service will perform monetization by selling advertisement space to free users, or through monthly subscription fees to Premium users. The Premium users are offered additional features of the Pulse web service, such as additional Participant metrics, full video catalog of eSports highlights, and more focused search results.

This study examined the brand personality types and social media practices of six college athletic Twitter accounts. Specifically, this study investigated whether certain brand personalities corresponded with specific social media practices on Twitter. The author conducted a content analysis of each school's tweets to measure brand personality and scraped data in order to collect social media practice information. Results suggest that brand personality and social media practices are distinct. Extraversion was the most common personality type among all schools. In addition, schools that tweeted less frequently than others exhibited more brand personality and used more visual media.

Objective: The purpose of this research project was to determine if there are nutritional disparities between students of differing socioeconomic status (SES) households. The SES was determined using school classifications (i.e., title one versus non-title one) as a proxy measure. It was hypothesized that children attending a title one school would consume a greater amount of sugary drinks than students attending a non-title one school Participants: The parents/guardians of students in grades 3rd and 4th, from a title one school and from a non-title one school. Methods: The data were gathered from surveys that were sent home to the parents/guardians of the students. The surveys inquired about how many bottles of water, juice boxes, glasses of milk, cans of soda, bottles of Gatorade, and cans of energy drinks their child consumes on a single weekend day. Statistical Analysis: Shapiro Wilk tests were used for normality. Differences in the consumption of sugary drinks were analyzed using the Mann Whitney U test. Results: A total of 150 surveys were returned by students from both schools (n=57 from the title one school; n = 93 from the non-title one school). The results showed a median of 1.00 (IQR=1.25, 4.50) sugary drink for the non-title one school and 3.00 (IQR=0.00, 2.00) sugary drinks for the title one school. The results from the Mann-Whitney U Test showed a significant difference in consumption in sugary drinks between schools (U = 1509.00, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Students attending a title one school consumed a greater amount of sugary drinks than students attending a non-title one school. Parents are a strong contributor to the nutritional diet of children, however students of this age are developing self-efficacy to make their own choices regarding the food and drinks they consume. Researchers can intervene by increasing student and parent knowledge and by researching the effectiveness of instructions based on the new knowledge.

This thesis project provides a thorough cost-benefit analysis of the golf industry in Arizona. We begin by examining the economic, environmental, and social costs that the industry requires. One of the largest costs of the industry is water consumption. Golf courses in Arizona are currently finding ways to reduce water consumption through various methods, such as turf reduction and increasing the usage of drip irrigation. However, even at current levels of consumption, golf only consumes 1.9% of water in Arizona, compared to the 69% consumed by agriculture. Of the water consumed by the golf industry, 26.3% is wastewater, otherwise known as effluent water. Since the population in Arizona is projected to grow significantly over the next decade, the amount of effluent water produced will also increase. Due to this, we recommend that the golf industry move towards using as much effluent water as possible to conserve clean water sources. Additionally, we examine land allocation and agricultural tradeoffs to the state. Most golf courses are built in urban areas that would not be suitable for agriculture. The same land could be used to build a public park, but this would not provide as many economic benefits to the state. Many courses also act as floodplains which protect the communities surrounding them from flooding. These floodplains have proven to be crucial to protect from occasional flash floods by diverting the excess water away from homes. We also discuss golf's primary social cost in terms of its perception as being a sport played exclusively by privileged and wealthy people. This is proven to be false due to many non-profit organizations centered around the game, as well as municipal courses that provide affordable options for all citizens who want to play. We provide an in-depth analysis of the benefits that the industry provides to the state and its citizens primarily through business and tax revenue, employment, and property values. Including multiplier effects, the golf industry contributed 42,000 full- and part-time jobs, $3.9 billion in sales, $1.5 billion in labor income, and $2.1 billion value added in 2014. An estimated $72 million in state and local taxes were generated from golf facilities alone, without including taxes from indirectly impacted businesses. This tax revenue provides a great benefit to the public sector and increases Arizona's GDP. Also, much of this economic contribution is from the golf tourism industry, which brings new revenue into the state that would otherwise not exist. Golf courses also increase the surrounding real estate prices anywhere from 4.8% to 28%, providing a positive externality to community members in addition to scenic views. Finally, we provide a case study of the Waste Management Phoenix Open (WMO) to illustrate the impact of Arizona's single largest golf event each year. In 2017, the event brought an estimated $389 million into Arizona's economy in one week alone. Also, it regularly hosts massive crowds with a record-breaking 719,179 people attending the event in 2018. The WMO has also taken a "Zero Waste Challenge" to promote eco-friendly and sustainable practices by diverting all of the waste and materials produced by the tournament from landfills. The WMO has been dubbed both the "Greatest Show On Grass" and the "Greenest Show On Grass" due to the entertainment value provided as well as its effort to improve the environment.

In this research paper I explore former male athletes, specifically professional football players entering local journalism. Research paired with interviews in regards to the topic explain why there are nearly 10 former NFL players in local markets where an NFL team is present, and why local journalists along with future journalists should not be worried about the number of former male athletes in local journalism. The paper also dives into the side-by-side statistics of why there is significantly more former college athletes in local journalism than former NFL players. The research focused on more than 100 television stations, revealing that 100 former or current collegiate or pro athletes are journalists for local stations where an NFL team is present. The data is solely reliant on the information that the journalists provided in their bios on the station websites. This could be seen as a possible limitation, however, the likelihood of these journalists either lying or not identifying as a former athlete is minimal due to the size of the accomplishment of actually participating in college as an athlete. The basis of my research is to figure out if former NFL players and former athletes in general are taking journalism jobs from aspiring journalists. I conclude that future journalists are not at risk of losing jobs when it comes to retired football players entering the field of local journalism. With that said, aspiring journalists need to continue to develop their social media skills to compete with athletes’ audiences on social networks.

The concept of the Mediterranean Diet was described by Ancel Keys from the Seven Countries study, occurring in the 1960s. Unlike other diets, the Mediterranean Diet is a cultural tradition of nations surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. It involves the healthy pattern of food consumption and physical activity, which developed as an outcome of the locality's available food, other environmental resources, and overall cultural characteristics such as the polychromic time orientation of the Mediterranean nations. The Mediterranean Diet is a lifestyle structured around understanding a locality's natural conditions and resources and sustaining positive relationships between individuals, the community, and the components of their environment. The diet is largely plant based, where daily foods include grains, fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and dairy products. Seafood is eaten several times a week, while other animal products (poultry, meats, eggs) and sweets are eaten less often and in moderation. Alcohol, for those who drink it, is consumed several times a week. Research has shown a variety of health benefits from this diet. These benefits include preventing cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, Type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, age related macular degeneration of the eyes, kidney disease and osteoporosis. It also has been shown to improve conditions of metabolic syndrome, obesity, and depression. These favorable health outcomes are a result of the beneficial components within the foods commonly eaten. Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals, which are needed to support cellular and overall organismal functioning, and nuts, vegetables, and fish also provide essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6. The unifying component for all regions adhering to the Mediterranean Diet is the use of olive oil. Beyond being a healthy source of fat, it contains numerous chemical components with antioxidant properties. The Mediterranean region is an optimal region for olive tree growth and olive harvest, based on temperature and soil conditions. However, geographic differences, nutrient availability and age of olive trees can impact the quality of olive fruits and olive oil. Furthermore, climate change presents a challenge for sustaining the Mediterranean diet as it adds stress to plants and aquatic life environments. However, the diet shows promise of protecting the environment, as plant-based diets are found to have lower negative environmental impacts. In conclusion, the Mediterranean diet is an interconnected system of relationships that adapts to a locality's community, land, and climate.

This paper intends to analyze the National Football League (NFL) and the role stadiums play within it. The NFL, being the nation's largest professional sports league, has experienced a large amount of volatility over the past couple of decades. Teams have relocated a significant number of times and stadium projects have grown in size, cost, and frequency. Because of these observations, we chose to focus in on this particular sports league in order to answer our many questions surrounding the role of a professional sports stadium in the economics of a city. We seek to understand the economics these sports stadiums impact on the league and the cities they reside in. To do this, we compiled data of NFL franchise wins, average ticket prices, stadiums, and franchise values, while researching the stadium building process and referencing the opinions of leading sports economists across the nation. Next, we discussed the process of building a stadium, which entails the core steps of design, construction, cost, and funding. We discuss tax-exempt municipal bonds, and explain what an impact economic analysis is and how teams use them to get cities to support their projects. Moreover, we discuss the threats of relocation and how the NFL can exert pressure on stadium project decisions. Finally, we talk about the future of the NFL, with a new trend of empty stadiums and make predictions for upcoming relocation destinations. Based on these findings, we draw conclusions on the economics of sports stadiums and offer our opinion on the current state of the NFL.

The purpose of this cookbook was to provide students that live in the Barrett dorms with easily accessible nutritious meals that prevent total reliance on the dorm's dining hall throughout the year. Limitations of this research included staying within budget, the availability of near-by grocery stores, meal preparation time, and the types of appliances which can be used in dorms. While living in dorms many students may find that dining halls have a large variety of food offerings that are consistently available. Although there are many options, they are not necessarily the healthiest choices. In addition to health these options rarely change. For safety reasons students are limited to dorm room appliance options that include a mini-fridge and a microwave. There is not a lot of cooking you can do with just a microwave, but with the proper knowledge it is surprisingly enough to make a great meal. In addition to appliances students can utilize cutting boards, plates, and plastic utensils, but if students are not educated about cooking diverse meals it is easy to venture toward unhealthy meal choices. Attending college can be costly. Expenses of tuition, books, supplies and living fees can add up quickly. Students are always in need of healthy meal options that are also healthy for their bank accounts. This cookbook contains affordable, healthy, and quick to make recipes. Virtually everyone who has ever been a student usually has a weekly/monthly budgetary amount to spend and cooking their own meals in the dorms will turn out to be much cheaper alternative to having dining hall meals every day. It was interesting to create a week full of meal preps for breakfast, lunch and dinner- including snacks with various alternatives. Not every student has a vehicle in which they can get necessary ingredients for cooking; Therefore, this cookbook has a grocery store map that includes address and store hours to aid students in choosing closer more convenient locations. In college, the journey to a healthy lifestyle is not easy. There are many ways to keep on track and follow the routine which works for both the body and the mind. Following the easy recipes within this cook book will minimize the risk of freshman 15 weight gain and decrease the time spent on both cooking and coming up with healthy meal ideas. These meals are uncomplicated, affordable, and take little to no effort. Barrett CookBook for Dorms main mission was to provide students with a foundation for a nutritional, flexible, and stress-free dining environment without the added stress of constantly thinking about what goes into their bodies.
