Teeth from a maxillary typodont were removed and coated with Nissin artificial plaque (Nissin Dental Products, Inc. Japan) and allowed to sit for 1 hour. The teeth were put back into the typodont and standardized photos were taken of the lingual, buccal, and facial surfaces of the teeth. The typodont was placed into an articulator, and the toothbrush was placed in between the maxillary and mandibular typodonts, and the brush was activated and moved from third molar to third molar for 45 seconds at a rate of 40 bpm. The maxillary typodont was photographed again at the same standardized positions as before. Before and after comparisons were made using ImageJ, and the plaque area coverage (PAC) was quantified. The results were measured using a linear mixed model test. There was a significant reduction in plaque that varied by toothbrush type. Results indicate a significant difference in plaque removal when comparing the Y-Brush and SonicBrush, with the SonicBrush removing less plaque (p < 0.001). When comparing the SymplBrush to the SonicBrush, the SymplBrush also removed significantly more plaque (p < 0.001). There was no statistical difference between the Y-Brush and SymplBrush (p = 0.20). Additionally, results show significant variation when comparing plaque removed from buccal vs. lingual surfaces (p-value=0.003), with less plaque removed on the lingual surface. When comparing buccal vs. facial surface, more plaque was removed on the facial surface. (p-value<0.001), Finally, when comparing the lingual vs. facial surfaces, there was more plaque remaining on the lingual surfaces. (p-value<0.001). Results also indicate that more plaque was removed on the anterior teeth compared to the posterior teeth (p < 0.001). There is variation in plaque removal amongst U-Shaped toothbrushes. The Y-Brush and the SymplBrush removed over half of the artificial plaque from the typodont.
