<dc:description>This dissertation examines the Chosŏn hansi anthology Kukcho sisan 國朝詩刪 (A Collection of Select Poems from Our Dynasty), compiled by Hŏ Kyun 許筠 (1569–1618) in 1607. Rather than offering a conventional literary analysis of the poems, which have already been extensively discussed by scholars, this study centers on the historical incident of the burning of the anthology’s printing blocks. Through a detailed exploration of this event—including the compilation, printing, and circulation of Kukcho sisan, as well as the social dynamics of the historical figures involved—I demonstrate how seemingly unrelated sociopolitical circumstances in mid-Chosŏn Korea, such as factional struggles, ideological conflicts, scholarly lineage contests, and the literary ties between Chosŏn and Ming China, directly shaped the fate of this poetry collection. In doing so, I argue that the print culture of traditional Sinitic societies, as exemplified by Chosŏn Korea, served as a vital arena for competition and negotiation among various social forces and stakeholders.
