<dc:description>As international travel becomes more accessible, the need for cultural awareness and responsible traveler practices has never been more critical. Traveling Abroad: A Guide to Cultural Competency and Promoting Respectful Traveler Practices is a thesis project that explores how travelers can engage with different cultures mindfully, ethically, and sustainably. Inspired by my study abroad experiences in Italy, Spain, and South Africa during the Fall of 2023, this project investigates the importance of cultural sensitivity in an increasingly globalized tourism landscape. Drawing from interdisciplinary research in tourism studies, cross-cultural communication, and environmental ethics, this thesis examines key aspects of cultural competency, including adapting to social norms, understanding local customs, and recognizing the historical and socio-economic contexts of destinations. Alongside a traditional research paper, the project features a companion website that serves as a practical resource, offering blog posts, curated readings, destination-specific guidance, and general travel tips. By fostering a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and highlighting sustainable travel strategies, this work encourages travelers to approach their journeys with empathy, humility, and respect, ultimately enhancing both personal experiences and the well-being of host communities.
