<dc:description>Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the number one leading cause of legal blindness in adults over the age of 65 years old in the United States. Despite this, many are unaware of the condition and its associated symptoms. The goal of this project is to bring the public’s attention to macular degeneration, its presentation, risk factors and available treatments. This project also aims to emphasize the importance of annual preventative screenings. Preventive exams are important to help those who might develop, or have developed AMD, to catch it in early stages. This is especially true for those without glasses since without regular ocular examination these patients’ retinal health is otherwise not being monitored.
Visiting a primary eye doctor yearly is important for ocular health and is recommended for those aged 40 and older. Those with a family history of macular degeneration should especially be vigilant about regular examination. These screenings are important for everyone and can benefit patients allowing early diagnosis of ocular conditions, particularly AMD.
For this to become more common, we need to increase public awareness and education on the importance of these screenings, ensuring that patients understand their significance, but also ensuring a full understanding of age-related macular degeneration and what they or their family are going through.
