Developments in the use of drill design, music choice, choreography, acting, costuming, props, audio sampling, and narration have all contributed to the change from the military-style 'variety show' design at the founding of DCI to the more theatrical total show concepts seen today. This thesis explores the developments in story-based show design over the four previously defined eras of show design in drum corps. Additionally, it defines two new eras, the Theatrical Program and the Full-Production Era, and examines developments in story based show design within these eras.
