<dc:description>This paper delves into the pivotal intersection of self-identity and sexuality, emphasizing its significance. It sheds light on the struggle of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and other diverse identities (LGBTQIA+) to secure legal recognition. Focusing on Italy, this thesis examines the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals regarding legal status within the broader context of family rights and socioeconomic standing. The paper traces the trajectory of LGBTQIA+ rights in Italy, particularly during the introduction of same-sex civil unions in 2016. It highlights the ongoing disparities in familial rights between LGBTQIA+ and heterosexual couples, exacerbated by the conservative government led by Giorgia Meloni’s Fratelli d'Italia— Brothers of Italy—party, which assumed power in 2022. In addition, development and research on surrogacy and family planning in Italy have been looked down upon from a social and cultural standpoint. The paper underscores the global outcry for LGBTQIA+ rights, emphasizing the urgent need for anti-discrimination legislation and equal family rights. Against this backdrop, it examines the impact of Meloni's advocacy for traditional values on the LGBTQIA+ community, noting a palpable surge in fear of discrimination and violence among Italian LGBTQIA+ individuals under the conservative government's rhetoric. </dc:description>
