<dc:description>College freshmen experience the transition from adolescence to emerging adulthood. They must adjust to the newfound independence that comes with living away from home for the first time, while adapting to new academic and social environments. Many students also experience loneliness. This combination of stresses and mental health issues can negatively impact students’ cognition, which in turn affects academic performance.

Furthermore, college freshmen in the “emerging adulthood” stage experience new situations and environments that challenge their pre-existing schemas about the world. This, in combination with less emotional interference, tends to lead to cognitive improvements (for example, problem solving and critical thinking). Thus, students at this age have an increased ability to shift from concrete operational to formal operational cognition. The logical abilities of individuals at the concrete operational stage are limited to concrete events, such as entities they directly experience. Individuals at the formal operational stage are able to think hypothetically and abstractly, take others’ perspectives, and engage in moral reasoning. Mental health issues negatively impact cognition, which can cause a regression to concrete operational cognition.

College freshmen can use bullet journaling to help prevent and/or address mental health issues that could interfere with their cognitive, social, and academic potential. The organizational nature of journaling also provides an opportunity for students to improve their time management and manage stress. This research project will focus on implementing creative bullet journaling strategies to address common mental health issues that college freshmen face in order to foster formal operational cognition.

Project Components:
1. Research paper: The paper describes the psychological research behind college students’ cognition and common issues they face that impact mental health.
2. Bullet journal: A physical journal is made available in a digital format to improve accessibility.
3. Bullet journal with annotations: The digital journal contains annotations to describe the purpose behind elements and provide guidance about how to effectively use the journal.
4. Presentation: A final Slides presentation summarizes the research and highlights key parts of the journal.
