<dc:description>My thesis focuses on a group of small-scale paintings on paper created circa 1976 by Iranian artist Nicky Nodjoumi (b. 1942) to illustrate a publication on the Arzhang (a Manichaean religious text). Nodjoumi created 280 works for the project, focusing on the prophet and painter Mani (216-274 AD), only some of which have survived. Thirty-one of these works were acquired by LACMA in 2020. This research traces the journey of these works after the publication was canceled due to the onset of the Iranian Revolution in 1979 and emphasizes the importance of this series as a previously missing link in the artist’s oeuvre, connecting his early political posters to his more recent large-scale narrative paintings.</dc:description>
