F2-isoprostanes are a series of prostaglandin-like compounds derived from the free radical-mediated lipid peroxidation of arachidonic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid that is ubiquitously expressed in cell membranes. F2-isoprostanes are biomarkers of oxidative stress, an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants that can cause damage to DNA, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. Increased production of lipid peroxidation products have been implicated in the pathology of a number of conditions and diseases in humans.
